Taekwondo is a martial arts meaning “the way of the
foot and fist”. It is an art of self-defense originated in
Korea. It is one of the most systematic Korean traditional
martial arts that teaches more than physical fighting
skills. From the word itself, Taekwondo, “TAE” means
“foot”, “leg” or “to step on”, “KWON” means “fist” or
“fight”, and “WON” means the “way” or “discipline”, we
can see the concept of it and that is the right way of using
all body parts to control or calm down the fights to build a
peaceful world.
Here are the benefits of practicing taekwondo, first it
boosts your self-confidence from trusting yourself that you
have the abilities and what you are capable of more than
you thought. Second, you learn how to show respect with
other people especially with your instructor and fellow
students when you are in a martial arts school. Bow is a
form of respect used in taekwondo. Lastly, taekwondo can
improve your discipline. Taekwondo is not all about
physical, it also needs your mental discipline as much as
physical discipline. Taekwondo is not an easy thing to
learn, and every single set of moves, every strike, and
every stance takes a lot of discipline to master.
In practicing taekwondo, there are also risks and
disadvantages. Some of these are risk of body injuries;
there will always be some sort of inherit risk when your
learning taekwondo or any martial arts for that matter
due to body contact and getting injured is unfortunately
unavoidable in Taekwondo; next is it focuses more on
sport and not self-defense, as Taekwondo gains more and
more popularity around the world, its focus has shifted
more towards the sports side of things especially if you
study WTF (World Taekwondo Federation) style. As
Taekwondo has become an official Olympic sport, a lot of
good old school techniques are now being abandoned in
favor of techniques to score points in competition. In
addition, the Olympic style of Taekwondo tends to favor
high head kicks rather then punching which further takes
away from the roots of Taekwondo; and last is it takes a
long time to learn and to master, it takes around 6 years
for every level achieved. In reality, it can take more than
30 years to reach a 9th Degree Black Belt. As you can
see, Taekwondo is a life commitment, not just a pastime.
