How to Learn English?

Introduction: Passion is the Number One Quality you need to learn English. This is the only quality which can

make you learn English easily. However, there are many other things you need to consider learning English. Don't do

a single thing rather do a number of things to learn English. The biggest problem most people face in learning a new

language is their own fear. They worry that they will make mistakes and people will laugh at them.  Don’t do this.  The

fastest way to learn anything is to do it – again and again until you get it right.   Like anything, learning English

requires practice. Don’t let a little fear stop you from getting what you want. When did you do when you fell down in

childhood? You got up and then started walking. So you need this approach to learn English. If you make a mistake,

don’t give up, continue your practice until you learn it.

Resourcefulness: Some students don’t use many resources. They simply either listen to English or read English

Grammar or just practice speaking English. Since most people learn from teachers, they depend themselves on

teachers and don’t try to work hard by themselves. Even if you study English at a language school it doesn’t mean you

can’t learn outside of class.  Using as many different sources, methods and tools as possible, will allow you to learn

faster.  There are many different ways you can improve your English, so don’t limit yourself to only one or two.  The

internet is a fantastic resource for virtually anything, but for the language learner it's perfect. Reserve some time for

practice, some for grammar and some for listening. Don’t depend on one skill.

Total Immersion: This means that you should surround yourself with English. You should think in English, Watch

English movies, Listen to English music and meet people who can speak English. The absolute best way to learn

English is to surround yourself with it.  Take notes in English, put English books around your room, listen to English

language radio broadcasts.  Speak English with your friends whenever you can. The more English material that you

have around you, the faster you will learn and the more likely it is that you will begin “THINKING in ENGLISH” .

The Speakers of English: If you want to learn a language, you must stay in contact with those who speak that

language. It means you must listen to those who speak the language you want to learn. They may be native speakers

or those already expert in speaking. So listen to them as much as possible. There are some good English teachers that
have had to learn English as a second language before they could teach it.  By listening to the speakers of English,

students of English can get to the rhythm or flow of the English Language.

Watch English Movies, Music and TV: This is the fun side of language learning. You can also learn English by

watching movies, listening to songs and watching TV. This is not only a fun way to learn but it is also very

effective.  By watching English films (especially those with English subtitles) you can expand your vocabulary and

hear the flow of speech from the actors.  If you listen to the news you can also hear different accents. Music can be a

very effective method of learning English.  In fact, it is often used as a way of improving comprehension.  The best

way to learn though, is to get the lyrics (words) to the songs you are listening to and try to read them as the artist

sings.  Now you can easily get songs on the Internet. This way you can practice your listening and reading at the same

time.  And if you like to sing, your speaking practice will be great. Now don’t watch movies for storyline or action,

don’t listen to music for fun only, now watch them for English language.

Learning by studying: The other methods are fine but nothing works like studying English. Only by studying

things like grammar and vocabulary and doing exercises, can you really improve your knowledge of any language. I

know grammar is not everything, grammar is not the only thing but it’s extremely helpful and the most important

when used with other methods. Grammar and readings books with the above methods will greatly and speedily

enhance your language. So study as often as possible!. Do exercises and take tests. I know tests may not be fun but by

completing exercises and taking tests you can really improve your English. One of the best reasons for doing lots of

exercises and tests is that they give you an idea to compare your future results with those of the past.   By taking tests,

you can tell how you know of English. By only listening and speaking, you cannot judge how much you know. Often, it

is by comparing your score on a test you took yesterday with one you took a month or six months ago that you realize

just how much you have learned.  If you never test yourself, you will never know how much you are progressing. Read

English, test your English and then see how much you improve.

Listening and Recording: Listen to English language courses which are  specially designed for you to learn

English fast. Listen to audio books or CDs in English. Simply listening isn’t very helpful, it must be reinforced with

speaking and not speaking alone but speaking and recording one’s voice. Nobody likes to hear their own voice on tape

but like tests, it is good to compare your tapes from time to time. When you record today and compare with your

recording after a month, this really tells you how much you have gained and how much more effectively you are

speaking.

General Principles
If you want to learn English, don’t worry about it. The first thing that a learner runs from is the fear of mistake and

grammar. Don’t be afraid of grammar. Remember that grammar is for communication. Don’t be obsessed for
grammar. You can learn English without grammar. For example, learning English is like diving, you just need to jump

into the water. Don't be afraid. The water is there is to support you, not drown you. Similarly, language learning is like

driving. When you learn driving you usually don't pay attention to how the car engine works, which way petrol travels

or how to change a wheel when it goes punctured. But when you are capable of driving, you start paying attention to

things like that so that you don't have to meet with the unpleasant when things go wrong. The same is the case with

grammar in the acquisition of a language. Love it or hate it! Grammar is there. We need to use it when we

communicate verbally or orally. It comes to our rescue when we find ourselves blunt and can't decide what is correct

in a particular situation.

Language Learning Decision: Next you must make a decision. If you have made a decision to learn English, try to

isolate your weak points. Suppose, you maybe good at grammar but your vocabulary is weak or you maybe good at

Speaking but your pronunciation is not fine. So you must focus your weak points first and once you feel alright with

that, you can focus other advanced things too. Once you have made the decision to learn English yourself, teach

whatever you know to your friends who want to improve their English. If you can speak some language, you can teach

the easiest one to your friends. In this way, you will never forget your English.

Complementary Skills: Learning English from a teacher or software is not enough, you need to organize yourself.

Keep a notebook to write in important points about grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. Study in short intervals,

don’t study for long hours and you must practice and review what you study. These are the complementary skills

which will enhance your English. Make some rules for yourself. For example, you can find people who want to speak

English and you can make ‘Speak English Only Rule’ with them. So take charge of your learning. Don’t depend on

others.

Kinds of Learners:  You need to learn English on your own terms; you need the methods that work for you. You

maybe a different learner. So find out your learning styles and habits. There are different ways to learn. Find out what

kind of learner you are in order to better understand how to learn more effectively. Some are Visual Learners. Visual

Learners are those who learn better by watching things and they learn better if they watch how things are done and so

they pick up the style and start doing the thing himself. You are a visual learner if you need to watch your teacher to

understand the lesson while he’s teaching. For a visual learner, private lessons are most effective. Some are Auditory

Learners. Auditory Learners are those who learn best from verbal lectures. They rely more on listening to what the

teacher says. For them, watching is not important. For an auditory learner, listening is more effective. Some are

Kinesthetic Learner. Kinesthetic Learner is one who learns better by doing. He needs an hands-on approach to learn

any thing. Kinesthetic students cannot sit down and read, they cannot listen for a long time because they get bored.

These are practical people and they need to take part in conversations and discussions to learn English.
