Reflection Paper

This reflection paper discusses the design and construction of water wells in rural areas of the Philippines. It notes that deep wells are commonly used as the primary water source in rural communities due to lack of resources. While households may not see the importance of technical assessments and guidelines before well construction, the author believes they are important to predict stability and prevent hazards. The author hopes that education on proper well construction can be provided to communities in the future. The paper also shares fond childhood memories the author has of playing in their family's water well with their father.

Dear ESE 143-2 diary,

In our country, deep wells are common especially in rural areas since it is their
primary source of water that they use in their daily living. It is like the quintessential of every
barrio [I know that too well because I am living in one] and it always fascinates me on how
this must-have brings out water from under the ground.

As I learn it this week, there are many configurations and assessments to be done
before a deep well can be established and built in your area. However, in line with what I
can see, this is not much of the priority of every household because in their minds they say,
“Ah, dito lang naman itatayo iyan eh, bakit pa kailang ng mga ganyan-ganyan?” or “Arte
lang yang mga ganyang assessment, eh bakit wala namang nangyaring masama sa iba?”. I
think that mindset is just a result of lack of resources. Come to think of it, they are just living
their lives day-by-day and, in a snap, this deep well took all the resources in one go? They
could care less, honestly, but I firmly believe that these steps should not be taken for
granted and not eliminated as much as possible. Hazards and accidents may happen, and
these assessments are the ones that predict the stability and integrity of the site itself.

I hope that in the near future, there will be ways to educate all the people about the
importance of following the guidelines in constructing deep wells. Although this might be a
push and it poses almost miniscule risks, it is still important because having knowledge will
always be a weapon and in this case, if some time, I hope not, complications arise in the
duration of the use, having knowledge about it can easily root out the problem and bring up
a solution that later can become part of the developmental process.

Having knowledge about the technicalities of the pump really brings back my
childhood. I remember that every weekend, may it be Saturday or Sunday or both, I will
always play with my father in the poso while taking a bath. I kind of regret that because of
the water that I wasted (huhu sorry po) but you know, as a child, I am not aware of that at
all. It is just sad that everything goes by a flash. And right now, I kind of miss my dad
(wooohoo not cryingggg). He’s not dead, just overseas hehe. It just lives in my mind that
every time I see our poso, I will always think about my happiest memories with him 😊

“Water has memories. Every time you drink some, you become more alive. You are nothing
without your memories. The memories are not yours alone. They come from years ago and
will go down to years after. Respect the water that flows through you. It will carry forth, a
bit of you”
