A. TEST PROCEDURE AND CHECKLIST

Conduct a visual and touch inspection of the impressed current anode

cable insulation immediately adjacent to the head of the anode. Anode
A1 SAES-X-400
leads with noticeable "necking", or an obvious reduction in diameter of the
insulation, shall not be used.

Inspect all cables and lead wires for burial for insulation damage
A2 immediately prior to installation. Inspect with a pulse type holiday detector SAES-X-400
set at 18,000 volts DC.

Check the holiday detector before using according to the manufacturer's

A3 SAES-X-400
instructions.

Conduct the inspection with a certified and calibrated pulse type holiday
A4 detector set at 18,000 volts DC. The calibration date shall not exceed 6 SAES-X-400
months.

A5 Do not use anodes with cables that fail the dielectric test. SAES-X-400

Repair of the insulation for buried positive cable by any method is

A6 SAES-X-400
prohibited.

CHECK-OUT INSTRUCTIONS
a) Make sure that the detector is turned OFF.
b) Select the specific voltage required by the CP manufacturer.
A7 c) Attach electrode to the voltage probe assembly and apply to the cable SAES-X-400
to be inspected. The electrode should always make intimate contact with
the surface under inspection.
Ref: Ref: Instrument Instruction Manual

OPERATING METHODS
a) The cable to be inspected must be grounded from the bare cable to
A8 earth at some point along the cable. If individual joints of the cable are to SAES-X-400
be inspected that are not electrically connected, each joint must be
grounded. Ref: Instrument Instruction Manual

c) Occasional checks of the detector operation should be made,

A9 particularly if no holidays are being found. SAES-X-400
Ref: Instrument Instruction Manual

b) V+AE21:AK30In case of LOW output voltage:

a. Check position of voltage selector switches.
A10 SAES-X-400
b. Check battery (is it fully charged?).
c. Check for "parted conductor in voltage probe and/or ground trail.

Inspect positive cables for insulation damage immediately prior to the SAES-X-600
A11
burial of the cables. SABP-X-003, Section 4.2.4.6. Sec. 5

If a holiday is detected, the entire anode/cable assembly shall be

A13 SAES-X-400
replaced.

Saudi Aramco: Company General Use

Negative cables and bond cables to be used for buried service need to be
A14 SAES-X-400
only checked visually for obvious insulation defects.
