    HAWA MAHAL

    THE PALACE OF WINDS

    ➢ HAWA MAHAL IS A PALACE IN JAIPUR, APPROXIMATELY


    300KM FROM DELHI.
    ➢ IT WAS BUILT BY MAHARAJA SAWAI PRATAP SINGH IN
    THE YEAR 1799.
    ➢ IT WAS DESIGNED BY THE ARCHITECT LAL CHAND

    USTAD.

    ➢ It was built from red and pink sandstone which is a full


    testimony to the epithet of Pink City given to Jaipur.
    ➢ Its five-floor exterior is similar to honeycomb like
    structure with its 953 small windows called Jharokas decorated
    with intricate lattice work.
    ➢ This architectural feature also allowed cool air from
    the Venturi effect to pass through, thus making the whole area
    more pleasant during the high temperatures in summer

    Architectural style of the monument: -

    ➢ The front elevation, as seen from the street, is like a


    honeycomb with small portholes.
    ➢ Each porthole has miniature windows and carved
    sandstone grills, finials and domes.
    ➢ It gives the appearance of a mass of semi-octagonal
    bays, giving the monument its unique façade.
    ➢ The stone-carved screens, small casements, and
    arched roofs are some of the features of this popular
    tourist spot.
    ➢ The monument also has delicately modeled hanging
    cornices.
    ➢ Its cultural and architectural heritage is a reflection
    of a fusion of Rajput architecture and Mughal
    architecture.
    Inside the monument: -
    ➢ The Hawa Mahal has only ramps, instead of regular
    stairs to reach the upper floors of the building.
    ➢ The jaali work in the windows of “Hawa Mahal” is
    similar to the honeycomb of a beehive.
    ➢ 953 small windows are designed with intricate lattice
    works.
    ➢ The original intent of the lattice design was to allow
    royal ladies to observe everyday life and festivals
    celebrated in the street below without being seen,
    since they had to obey the strict rules of "purdah".
    ➢ This architectural feature also allowed cool air from
    the Venturi effect to pass through, thus making the
    whole area more pleasant during the high temperatures
    in summer.

    Conclusion:-
    ➢ In the present day, the “Hawa Mahal Jaipur” has
    become a famous tourist spot and one of the
    spectacular sights in Jaipur.
    ➢ The palace has become a famous spot for the shooting
    of several Indian and international films.
