L’Aquila, Abruzzo Italy 2009 Earthquake

Location

L’Aquila is a city in central Italy It has a total area of 5,047.55 km2. It is the capital city of
both the Abruzzo region and of the province of L’Aquila. The province of L’Aquila has
the highest mountains in the Apennines. The province’s major river are the  Aterno-
Pescara, Sangro, Liri, Salto, and the Turano.

Tectonics:
Italy is prone to earthquakes because the African and Eurasian plates converge. The
plates are a convergent boundary, this is where a continental plate pushes a oceanic
plate down underneath it because the oceanic plate is heavier. The pressure caused
by the oceanic plate sinking further down can cause severe earthquakes . In Italy the
African plate is subducting below the Eurasian Plate.
Event:
On the 6th April 2009 at 3:32am a 6.9 magnitude earthquake hit the city of L’Aquila
the initial earthquake lasted 20 seconds . Overall 308 people were killed and 1600
injured. The earthquake caused damage to 11,000 buildings . More than 65,000
inhabitants were forced to leave their homes as more than 45 towns were affected.

Short Term Responses:


Many short term responses were sent out. For the people who were homeless hotels
provided shelter for 10,000 and 40,000 some train carriages were used as shelters. In
addition the Prime Minister of Italy, at the time Silvio Berlusconi, offered the use of
some of his homes as a temporary shelters.
Within an hour the Italian Red Cross was searching for survivors they were assisted by
7 dog units, 36 ambulances and a temporary hospital. Water, hot meals, tents and
blankets were distributed.
The EU provided $552.9 million from its major disaster fund and £170 million was
raised by the British Red Cross. The Disasters Emergency Committee didn’t provide
any aid because Italy is a High Income Country.

Long Term Responses:


The long term responses of the earthquake was that the Italian prime minister
promised to build a new town to replace L’Aquila as the capital of the area. An
investigation is launched into why buildings weren’t earthquake proof.
In October 2012 6 scientists and a government official were found guilty of multiple
manslaughter ,in connection with a statement they had made prior to the
earthquake, and they were sentenced to 6 years in prison. No taxes were paid by the
residents of L’Aquila during 2010. In addition to encourage students beck to the
University in L’Aquila the fees were dropped for 3 years.
