Guide questions

1. Based on the different terms above, what do you think best describes the capabilities of
animals and plants?
Growth Adaptability
Reproduction
Metabolism
Homeostasis
Movement
Development
2. What is an organism? What do you think are factors to be considered as an organism?
An organism is any individual who possesses the properties of life and consists of cells.
As an organism, there are several aspects to be considered, and one of them is that you
are made of cells. If an individual tends to reproduce and is capable of growth and
development, it can be regarded as an organism.

3. Pick six words from the table and explain each words using your own words. (EXCEPT:
organism)
• Cells- basic unit of life
• Plants – it produces its own food via photosynthesis and it gives off oxygen
• Fungi – part of the animal kingdom which are usually consisting of eukaryotic organisms
• Movement – the act of moving
• Development – the process of progressing or changing in a productive way
• Reproduction – the process of producing off springs

WHAT MAKES LIFE POSSIBLE? As for the development of knowledge towards how life
became possible, curiosity led us to growing studies and further experimentations. Scientist
enriched their ideas to how life really began from gaining samples of different species. Now, we
look first on your understanding of the complex idea of what organism is made up of before we
look on every detail.
Directions: Observe the pictures below. Analyze to what levels of organization they belong from
the simplest to the complex then describe each. Identify the term that is being referred in the
image. Designate a number from 1 – 5. 1 as the first level and 5 as the last level of organization
of life.

Guide Questions:

1. Based from the diagram, what is the simplest in the level of organization? Why?
Cells, It is because cells are regarded as the smallest unit of existence according to studies and hypotheses that a naked
___________________________________________________________________________
eye would not be able to see its structures or properties, this supports the cell being the simplest in the organization stage.

operating as one in which the organism is considered to be the most complex cause.
___________________________________________________________________________

3.Based on your own understanding, can an organism function if cells are damaged?
Why? Why not?

Yeah, that's because an organism already has a system in a body that has various roles to perform and an
___________________________________________________________________________
organism can still operate even though it has damage to cells because cells are known as the simplest type of organization
___________________________________________________________________________
and our system can easily recover them.
___________________________________________________________________________

4.Do you think plants undergo the same level of organization same with the humans and
animals? Explain your answer.

Yes, plants are also made up of cells that are known to be the basic unit of life and when they interrelate together they also
___________________________________________________________________________
form the same organizational level with animals and humans, but how plants form organizational forms is different
___________________________________________________________________________
with animals and humans since they mark organization and function differently in plants, they also have different characteristics

and functions.

2. When Hooke first used the term cell, did he intend to have it apply to living material? Explain
your answer.

Yes, he saw a box like structure when Robert first looked at a microscope and used cork and named it cells because Hooke

___________________________________________________________________________

3. What do you think were the evidences when Virchow postulated that all new cells arise from
existing cells?

Virchow proposed that all new cells formed in 1855 from existing cells. That was the year when the invention of the compound

microscope mastered its absolute resolution limit.
___________________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________

4. How did Virchow’s idea contributed to the formation of the cell theory?

The concept of Rudolf Virchow gave way to relying on the modern cell theory that all cells come from pre-existing cells, and this

statement rendered the theory of the factual knowledge we are actually using.

II. Objectives:
Compare and contrast prokaryotic from eukaryotic cells.
III. Materials: Pen / pencil and paper
IV. Procedures / Instructions
All living organisms are made up of cells; however, cells come in varied shapes with
size typically from 5 to 50 micrometers in diameter. There are bacteria that are about 0.2
micrometers. Even though cells vary in size and shape, certain structures are common to most
cells. All cells have a cell membrane and cytoplasm.
There are two basic types of cells based on whether they have a nucleus or not: prokaryotic and
eukaryotic cells.

Directions: Below is a picture of a prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell. Compare and contrast
one with the other using the Venn diagram below, label if necessary.

c. Describe the stages of mitosis.
III. Materials: Textbook and pen/ pencil
IV. Procedures / Instructions: Introduction
One of the distinct characteristics of living things is being able to perpetuate themselves.
Cells need to undergo cycles as part of their growth and to repair or replace damaged ones. Cell
Cycle enables an organism to continue its existence by multiplying itself in controlled and
systematic processes.
Directions: Complete the table by filling in the series of events that happen in the first
and important part of the Cell Division, which is the interphase. Use the figure below for your

INTERPHASE DESCRIPTION
(PHASE)

Gap 1 The cell increases or becomes larger in this stage

and generates RNA and synthesizes proteins.

S Phase In this phase, the cell duplicates its DNA

Gap 2 The cell begins to expand and other substantial

organelles replicate.

M phase All organelle growth and replication activities are s

topped, the cell prepares for division, and becomes
2 identical daughter cells.

Draw the different stages of Mitosis in chronological order. Explain what happen during the
particular phase.

DRAWING DESCRIPTION

The chromatin undergoes a condensation process

in prophase and joins chromosomes and the
membrane surrounding the breakdown of the nucleus.

General Biology 1 |
The spindle fibers will be bound to every pair of
sister chromatids in metaphase. Some of the
spindle fibers are connected to each other and the
sister chromatids are connected to some.

Spindle fibers are shortened in anaphase, and the

sister chromatids are isolated and pushed to the
opposite pole.

The chromosomes enter the opposite poles in the

last stage of mitosis, which is telophase, and
undergo a decondensation process, which is the
end of mitosis. In each daughter's cell, the
organelle starts to appear.
