Project LEAD: Learn. Earn. Advocate.

Deliver

The Issue:

Covid19 is disproportionately impacting low income communities of color as a

result of historical and institutional racism. Effective messaging that is culturally
and logistically appropriate isn’t being developed to ensure the safety and health of
New York City Housing Authority and other low-income residents of the city.
Additionally, Summer Youth Employment, an essential summer program that
employs and prepares young people for future careers has been defunded due to
budget constraints directly related to Covid19. This leaves NYC’s most vulnerable
youth without the financial resources they and their families need now more than
ever.

Project Overview:

Recognizing that the summer months are approaching and the realities of the NYC
Budget have left our youth without summer youth employment, the total amount
requested will be used to build a virtual summer youth employment program that
will pro-socially engage 40 young people from all 5 boroughs and provide
education and information to nearly 500,000 residents of New York City Public
Housing. NYC Together will do this in partnership with 1Hood Media, NYPD,
Mayor's Office to Prevent Gun Violence, Young Men’s Initiative and various
community partners. Youth will develop culturally appropriate and informative
campaigns that educate members of the black and Latinx community about Covid-
19 – including information on health disparities, and other inequities that have
compounded the impact of Covid-19 on the black and Latinx communities of NYC.
Youth will work closely with health experts, law enforcement and community
based organizations in a mutually beneficial immersion program that results in
innovative and creative solutions/ outreach to address the Covid-19 crisis.

Project Description:

Project LEAD will be multi-phased and consist of 180 virtual contact-hours. We

will use collaborative research and design to develop a set of inquiry-based, hands-
on activities that investigate health, nutrition, housing and environmental disparities
that impact communities of color. This curriculum will provide pedagogical
methods and experiential learning activities that will help youth investigate social
justice issues rooted in the Covid-19 crisis. This curriculum will include anti-racist
tools that help participants better understand how institutional racism and systemic
poverty shape the public safety and health policies and practices in low-income

1
communities of color. Through a better understanding of how public safety policies
and practices operate and who’s involved, participants will develop knowledge,
skills, and strategies to better participate in the decision-making processes that
shape these issues and have the tools needed to educate and inform their
communities.
