    Appendicitis is caused by obstruction of the appendix, usually by hardened stool or a tumor, which increases pressure inside and prevents drainage. This leads to infection as normal bacteria invade the inflamed appendix wall. If not treated, the infection can spread and cause perforation of the appendix or peritonitis. Left untreated, it can progress to sepsis, septic shock, and even death. Treatment involves antibiotics, fluid replacement therapy, and an appendectomy to remove the infected appendix.
