Lesson Day 1

Lesson Rationale

What We Did Last Week:

 We finished reading the final short story of our unit which focused on central literary terms: imagery, foreshadowing,
mood, internal conflict, external conflict, theme, characterization, and symbolism.
 We reviewed nonfiction texts to analyze “claim, evidence, and reasoning” format.
 We introduced the mini presentation activity.

Learning Standards:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.9-10.1
Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the
text.

Lesson Objectives/SWBAT (Students Will Be Able To):

 Students will be able to cite “Marigolds” by Eugenia Collier to support their analysis of imagery, foreshadowing, mood, and
symbolism.
 Students will be able to create five-minute mini presentations that have one visual component, textual evidence, and an
analysis of how assigned literary terms apply to the course text.
