Unit 1: Basics of Fluid Power and Pumps
Q. Description Marks
No.
1 List the important primary and secondary functions of a hydraulic fluid. State the 5
properties of fluids which need to be considered while using hydraulic systems.
[August 2015]
2 State advantages of fluid power systems over mechanical & electrical system. 5
[August 2014]
3 Draw Simple Hydraulic circuit, showing all its essential components. State the 5
functions of each component. [August 2014, 2015]
4 List important application of fluid power and explain any five in detail. [August 5
2014]
5 Draw ISO symbols for following components 5
i) 4x2 roller operated spring offset DCV
ii) Double acting cylinder with adjustable cushioning at both ends
iii) Pressure intensifier
iv) Unidirectional variable displacement hydraulic motor
v) Bi-directional fixed displacement pump [August 2015]
6 Classify hydraulic Pumps & define various efficiencies of a pump. 5
7 Draw a neat sketch of balance vane pump & write advantages of it [August 6
2014]
8 Draw the neat sketch of balaned vane pump. A Vane Pump having a 5
displacement volume of l5 cm 3/rev runs at 2100 rev/min. It operates against the
maximum system pressure of 20 MPa. The volumetric and overall efficiency of
pump are 92 and 82 percentage respectively. Determine
a) Actual flow rate delivered in liter/min
b) The power required to drive the pump.
c) The drive torque at the pump shaft.
9 A pump has a displacement volume of 98.3 cc. It delivers 0.00154m3/s at 1000 5
rpm and 70 bar. If the prime mover input torque is 124.5 N-m.
Find Overall Efficiency of the pump.
10 The geometric displacement of a pump operating at 1000 rpm is 81.95 cm 3. If it 6
delivers 75.84 LPM of oil at 6.9 MPa, and the prime mover input torque is
101.25 N-m, find the overall efficiency of the pump and theoretical torque
required to operate the pump.
