This is my first self-written Amigurumi pattern. It requires the knowledge of basic

crochet stitches (mainly ch and sc). I used a 4 mm crochet hook and black, white and
dark brown cotton yarn with 85 m per 50 g. The head and body piece of the beetle came
out to be appr. 11 cm long, the complete beetle is about 16 cm long. Since the beetle is
made up of a number of different crocheted pieces, it takes quite a lot of sewing to put
everything together.
“Stag beetle” is a term used for a group of about a thousand species in the family
Lucanidae. In Europe, it most commonly refers to Lucanus cervus, once a common
beetle, but now under protection as a threatened species. This pattern is modelled after
a male specimen of this species.

Stitches and Abbreviations

The beetle is mainly worked in rows. Abbreviations used:

ch Chain stitch

1

(9,8,7,6)

Sc once around rim of entire peace to create a smooth edge. Slip stitch, fasten off.
Leave a long tail of yarn on one of the pieces, this will be used to sew the bottom and
top half of body and head together. Orientation for the length of the tail: Try twice the
circumference of the beetle’s body.

Breast plate
Use black yarn.

• ch 6

• ch 1 to turn, sc 6 (6)

• ch 1 to turn, inc, sc 4, inc (8)

2
• ch 1 to turn, inc, sc 6, inc (10)

• ch 1 to turn, inc, sc 8, inc (12)

• ch 1 to turn, sc 12 (12)

Sc around the rim. When getting to a corner on the long side, sc 3 into the stitch at the
corner. When getting to a corner at the short side, also make 3 stitches: sc, dc, sc. This
makes the corners more pronounced. Slip stitch to end, fasten off.

Inner wings
Use white yarn. Right wing:

• ch 4

• ch 1 to turn, sc 4 for 6 rows (4)

• turn without ch, sc 3 (3)

• ch 1 to turn, sc 3 (3)

• turn without ch, sc 2 (2)

• ch 1 to turn, sc 2 (2)

• turn without ch, sc 1 (1)

Sc around the rim, slip stitch, fasten off.

Left wing: As right wing, but turn the piece before crocheting around the wing.

Outer wings
Use dark brown yarn. Right wing:

• ch 5

• ch 1 to turn, sc 5 for 6 rows (5)

• turn without ch, sc 4 (4)

• ch 1 to turn, sc 4 (4)

• turn without ch, sc 3 (3)

• ch 1 to turn, sc 3 (3)

• turn without ch, sc 2 (2)

• ch 1 to turn, sc 2 (2)

• turn without ch, sc 1 (1)

Sc around the rim, slip stitch, fasten off. For the left wing, repeat, but turn before
crocheting around the wing.

3
Head plate and mandibles
Use dark brown yarn.
• ch 8
• ch 1 to turn, sc 8 (8)
• ch 1 to turn, inc, sc 6, inc (10)
• ch 1 to turn, sc 10 for 3 rows (10)
• ch 1 to turn, sc 2 (2)
• turn without ch, sc 1 (1)
• ch 1 to turn, sc 1 for 2 rows (1)
• ch 1 to turn, sc 3 into stitch (3)
• turn without ch, sc 2 (2)
• ch 1 to turn, sc 1 (1)
• ch 5
• sc into second stitch from hook and other three ch stitches (4) so that you can
continue to sc along the inner edge of the mandible.
• sc along the remaining 8 stitches of the last full row (8)
• ch 1 to turn, sc 2 (2)
• turn without ch, sc 1 (1)
• ch 1 to turn, sc 1 for 2 rows (1)
• ch 1 to turn, sc into stitch (3)
• turn without ch, sc 2 (2)
• ch 1 to turn, sc 1 (1)
• ch 5
• sc into second stitch from hook and other three ch stitches (4) so that you can
continue to sc along the outer edge of the mandible.
Sc around the rest of the head plate. Slip stitch to end, fasten off.

Strengthening the head plate (optional)

To make the head plate stiffer, you can crochet another flat piece to support it from
below:
• ch 10
• ch 1 to turn, sc 10 for three rows (10)
Slip stitch, fasten off. Sew this piece under the front of the head plate behind the
mandibles to make it thicker and less bendy.

Assembly of body, wings, breastplate and head
Take the two black body and head pieces and sew them together using the long tail left
on one of the pieces. Stuff as you go along. Weave in the ends on all remaining pieces.
Take the two white inner wings and sew them onto the back of the body as shown. Take
care only to attach the top of the wings so that they can still be folded upwards as if
the beetle was flying. Sew the two brown outer wings on top of the inner wings so that
these are covered as much as possible. Sew on the breast plate in front of the wings
so that its hind edge covers the top of the wings, hiding the place where the wings are
attached.
Tip: Try to fit on all the pieces before sewing on anything. Take care especially that
the breast plate and the head plate fit neatly next to each other.
Antennae: sc into the side of the head with black yarn, ch 10, hdc into second stitch
from hook, fasten off. Repeat this on the other side. Weave in yarn ends.
Next attach the head plate in front of the breast plate. The whole body with wings,
breast plate and head plate should look as in the second image below.

Front legs: Make 2
Use black yarn. First part:
• ch2, sc4 into first ch (4)

• sc around for 6 rounds (4)

• inc, inc, sc2 (6)

• slst, fasten off.

Second part:
• ch2, sc3 into first ch (3)

• sc around for 4 rounds (3)

• dec (2)

• ch5

• sc into second stitch from hook and back along the other 3 ch st, slst, fasten off.
To assemble, sew the thicker end of the second part into the thicker opening (the end)
of the first part at an angle to form a joint (the angle should be slightly larger than a
right angle to appear natural).

Middle and hind legs: Make 4

Use black yarn. First part:
• ch2, sc4 into first ch (4)

• sc around for 4 rounds (4)

• inc, inc, sc2 (6)

• slst, fasten off.

Second part:
• ch2, sc3 into first ch (3)

• sc around for 2 rounds (3)

• dec (2)

• ch5

• sc into second stitch from hook and back along the other 3 ch st, slst, fasten off.
Again, sew the thicker end of the second part into the thicker end of the first part at
roughly a right angle.

Finally, sew all the legs to the underside of the body as shown in one of the pictures
below. Your beetle is now finished!
