Welcome to IDEAS
E-Learning Courses

There are many advantages to E-Learning! Key features among

them are:-

• You can study in your own time and at your own pace

• You can repeat sections time and again until you understand things
clearly

• There are no travel or hotel costs involved

Interaction with the tutor is still possible, just as it is in physical classroom,

through individual calls via Skype or e-mail / social media sites.

Best Drilling Practices

Course Objective

The objective of this course is to help people to understand those actions which constitute
Best Drilling Practices on-board the rig. Although of course essentially rig-based,
nonetheless the rig has to be well placed from a Drilling Program perspective and Training
perspective in order for Best Drilling Practices to be achieved offshore.

The information contained within this course references SPE / IADC data, Best Practices
Forums data and General Good Industry Practice. It also gives delegates further sources of
information to pursue should they have a particular, more detailed interest.

Who Should Do The Course

The course has been written for several groups of personnel, for example:-

• Assistant Drillers / Drillers / Toolpushers (especially Performance Toolpushers who are

involved with “Turn-key” or “Performance” contracts) & Rig Managers;

• Offshore Drilling Engineers;

• Drilling Supervisors;

• Service personnel who wish to broaden their knowledge and understanding of Best Drilling
Practices (e.g. Mud Engineers, Directional Drillers);

• Delegates who are in another industry or full-time education who envisage joining the
Drilling Industry.

Best Drilling Practices

Section 1: Reaming & Back- Section 5: MWD Surveys

Reaming In this section we spend considerable time on:-
In Section 1 we look at the following:-
• Best Practices & Procedures
• Planning
• Organisation Section 6: Drilling Parameter Trends
• Parameters Here we go through what changes in
• General Operations various parameters could mean, and how
to interpret them, such as:-
Section 2: Tripping in Deviated Hole
In Section 2 we look at the following:- • Torque, Drag, Over-pull, Standpipe
Pressure, Changes in Cuttings Volume,
• Planning Changes in ECD (Equivalent Circulating
• Parameters Density) etc.
• General Operations

Section 7: Running Casing & Liners

Section 3: Hole Cleaning
Generally, Hole Cleaning is one of the Successful Drilling isn’t just about drilling to Section T.D. We also
need to case-off the drilled hole with casing / liner. In this
commonest reasons for poor ROP (Rate of
section we look at:-
Penetration), Stuck Pipe and a variety of
problems downhole. Thus, in this section, we • Best Practices & Procedures
spend quite some time on the following:-

• Cuttings Transportation
Section 8: Logging
• Mud Rheology We need to drill a hole which allows for the passage of logging
• Flow Rate tools to Section T.D. as well as their successful recovery. Here
• Hole Geometry we look at:-
• Mud Weight
• Cuttings Properties • Best Practices & Procedures – Including Safety with Regard to
Explosives
• ROP
• Mud Conditioning
• Drillstring Rotation
• Solids Control
• Rig-site Parameter Monitoring • Differential Sticking Risk Mitigation
• What the Shale Shakers Tell Us
• What Cavings Tell Us
• Hole Cleaning in Vertical / Near Vertical Section 9: Coring
Wells
• Hole Cleaning in Deviated / Horizontal Once we have reached Top Reservoir, many Operators choose
Wells to core for the vital data / information which core can deliver.
Here we look at:-
• Use of Hole Cleaning Charts
• Surge & Swab Mitigation
• Anti-Jamming
Section 4: Making Connections
• Best Practices & Procedures
In this section we spend considerable time on:-

• Best Practices & Procedures

Section 10: Lost Circulation

Lost circulation typically means problems, apart from high mud bills / costs. Here we look
at:-

• Prevention
• What Should Be Done if Lost Circulation occurs
• Lost Circulation & Stuck Pipe Prevention
• Lost Circulation & Well Control

Section 11: Preventing Drill String Failures

Drillstring Failures cost $millions particularly if the fish cannot be recovered and the well has to
be side-tracked. Here we look at:-

• Care of Tubulars & Inspection

• BHA Connection Fatigue Prevention
• Drill pipe Fatigue Prevention

Section 12: Secondary Freeing Procedures

Stuck Pipe Prevention and How to Get Free (Primary Actions) is covered in a separate E-
Learning Package. Secondary Freeing Procedures are covered here, namely:-

• Pipe Release Agents; Procedure for spotting pills

• Acid
• Fresh Water Pills
