 Housing

Structure and function of assemblies are described in the following

sections.

Supply unit components Mains voltage reaches the supply unit via the mains socket (with
integrated fuse holder and line filter) and the mains switch. The
supply unit comprises the transformer and Supply_TL1R2 PCB, both
mounted on an aluminium plate.

The PCB comprises the voltage selector (for operation with 115 V and
230 V), the rectifiers and the smoothing capacitors; it supplies
unregulated voltages (+/-28 VDC and ca. 160 VDC) for the RF
generator PCB. The supply unit is connected to the RF generator PCB
(RFGEN_MBC200).

RF generator PCB The RF generator PCB comprises all components required for:

generating sinusoidal RF voltages (ca. 360 kHz)

system monitoring and security devices (2 micro controllers)

 patient electrode monitoring (MBC200 only)

all connectors for connecting the unit’s sockets

Fig. 4: Supply unit PCB

J3 (secondary socket) connects the secondary windings (2 off 20 V, 1

off 115 V) to the supply PCB.

A melt insert (T3.15 A) protects the transformer’s secondary side

(115 V winding). Self-healing ceramic fuses protect the secondary low
voltages (2 off 20 V).

The rectified and smoothed voltages (ca. 160 VDC, 2 off 28 VDC)
reach the RF generator PCB via J4. J4 also transmits the “power
good” issued when the mains voltage is at least 80% of the rated
value (115 V / 230 V).

An additional M2.5 A fuse protects the 160 VDC output (of J4) to
minimise subsequent damage to the RF generator PCB in case of a
voltage regulator defect.

The current limiter unit comprises a resistor connected in series with

the primary winding. A relay bypasses this resistor ca. 0.5 s after the
mains voltage is turned on. The relay drops out in case of brief
power outages or voltage drops. This prevents an excessively high
surge current that could cause the unit’s fuses to blow. A thermal
fuse is provided to prevent the current limiting resistor from
overheating (risk of fire) in case of a relay malfunction.

4 LED indicate the presence of all operating voltages and of the

“Power Good” signal. These LED must be lit after unit power -on.

are fastened here with screws) is provided for cooling the final stage
transistors and the U1 voltage regulator. The cooling bracket
temperature is measured and the fan switches on automatically if
needed.

4.4.3 The display PCB

All controls (except for volume control and mains switch) are located
on the display PCB. According to the unit type (MBC200/BCC140) it
also features different components.

4.5 Technical properties

The following section describes the RF and test signals generated on
the RF generator PCB.

4.5.1 RF-
RF - Signal
The RF generator generates a sinusoidal RF signal varying according
to application, effect and power setting that is output either
continuously or pulsed.

Depending on the operating mode, power and selected effect level;

this results in different power curves (correlation of power and load
resistance) that can be checked with a special power meter for RF
surgery units.

The maximum power output corresponds to the power reading in

the display.

System configuration

4.5.1.1 Pure cut, monopolar

For pure cutting, the RF generator continuously operates at a

medium RF voltage and with arc limitation. There is a slight rise of
RF voltage and arc intensity across power. The maximum RF current
(current limit value) is exponentially calculated from the set power.
The maximum power is 200 W

4.5.1.2 Cut blend, monopolar

Cut Blend uses a higher RF voltage than Pure Cut. At the same time,
the RF generator is periodically switched off and on at a frequency of
ca. 20 kHz. The higher the effect level, the shorter is the RF generator
duty cycle and the higher is the RF voltage in order to increase the
coagulation effect in correlation with the effect level. The maximum
power is 150 W.

4.5.1.3 Pulse cut, monopolar

The Pulse mode alternately performs coagulation and cutting. To

this end, the generator operates at a low voltage (for coagulation)
and briefly at a higher voltage and with arc (for cutting). The higher
the effect level, the longer the cutting cycle; this increases the
cutting speed. Power and current limit values are always identical.
This is why the power meter indicates a constant (non-pulsed)
power below a certain load resistance. Above a certain load
impedance, the RF generator provides the set power in the Cut
phase only, resulting in a periodic fluctuation of the power value. In
this case, normal digital power meters for RF surgery units no longer
provide correct readings! This is why the power graphs end at ca.
200 Ω. The maximum power is 80 W

Soft coagulation uses relatively low RF voltages where cutting due

to arc formation does not yet occur. Maximum RF current and RF
voltage are exponentially calculated in dependence of the power.
This is why different power settings result in similar power graphs.

4.5.1.5 Coagulation Force, monopolar

Force Coagulation uses a higher voltage and a short RF generator

duty cycle (20% to 30%). A certain cutting effect cannot be
prevented. The RF generator duty cycle (frequency: ca. 20 kHz) is
increased along with the effect level, which also increases the
cutting intensity. Maximum power is 120 W.

4.5.2 The patient electrode monitor (MBC200 only)

During monopolar treatment, the RF current flows through the
patient between the handpiece and the patient. The contact
resistance between patient electrode and patient is particularly
critical since too high a resistance can cause the contact point (skin)
to unduly heat up and thus to cause burns. For this reason, the
MBC200 features a patient electrode monitor. Its function is as
follows:

Measurement of the contact resistance between both patient

electrode cables with an RF current loop (ca. 130 kHz)

Indication of the patient electrode state (contact resistance) as

“good” (green), “sufficient” (yellow) and “danger” (flashing in red
and alarm sound) in the patient electrode display.

Shut off and lock the RF generator in case of patient electrode

alarm

The patient electrode alarm is also issued when the currents of any
of the electrode parts (in case of split electrodes) differ too much (by
more than ca. 250 mA).

Single patient electrodes do not allow for an automatic status check

(except for the cable). In this case, the patient electrode monitor
indicates green and yellow simultaneously.

The following table shows the function of the patient electrode

monitor:

Patient electrode monitor Condition Remarks

Green & yellow: Resistance below 10 Ω Undivided patient electrode

Green Resistance between 10 Ω and 70 Ω Suitable resistance

Yellow Resistance between 70 Ω and 100 Ω Resistance approaches limit value

Flashes red, alarm Resistance above 100 Ω Impermissible resistance

Flashes red, alarm Current difference exceeds 250 mA Impermissible current difference

4.5.3 The bipolar automatics

With the bipolar automatics enabled, the RF generator is switched
to the set power when contact with the tissue is detected. The
power is maintained until a significant RF current drop indicates
that the instrument has been taken off the tissue. The RF generator
is used as test generator:

The RF generator starts at a very low power and RF voltage when

the automatic mode is enabled. The RF current is continuously
measured. The RF generator is in the “ready mode”.

The RF generator switches to the mode set on the unit (power,

function) when the RF current exceeds a particular threshold
(corresponding to falling short of a particular contact resistance,
approximately 100 Ω). The RF generator is now in the “active
mode”.

The RF generator switches back to the “ready mode” when the RF

current drops below a particular threshold determined by the set
parameters (RF voltage) in the “active mode”. The calculated
current threshold corresponds to a tissue resistance of several
thousand Ohms to prevent the generator from switching off
prematurely due to coagulation and drying tissue.

4.5.4 Button and footswitch polling

Brief spike pulses with alternating polarity are sent via a series
resistor to a test transformer of an oscillator circuit. The secondary
windings of the transformers are connected via diodes to the
handpiece or footswitch buttons. When a button is pressed (short-
circuited), the positive or negative half cycle is short-circuited,
depending on the polarity of the series diode. This is evaluated and
detected as fingerswitch or footswitch actuation. The impulse
voltages range around 10 Vpp.

4.5.5 System monitor

Major safety-relevant operating parameters such as:

 power output

U1 voltage (determines the RF voltage)

 operating voltages of micro controllers

 button and footswitch polling

 software (watchdog and plausibility check)

are continuously monitored. An appropriate error is generated in

case of an error; the unit switches off and is locked. The display
indicates the type of error and an appropriate measured value.

A self test checking all safety-relevant monitoring functions runs

after unit power-on.

5 Settings in the service mode

5.1 PSC mode

All calibration takes place in special service modes (PSC mode). There
are no adjusters on the PCBs. The RF generator PCB is defective and
needs to be replaced if recalibration (e.g. because of incorrect output
power) is no longer possible. Recalibration lets you correct the
following values:

 Power monitor

 Short-circuit current (current limitation)

 Patient electrode monitor

 Bipolar automatics

 Arc regulation (test only)

In addition, you can read out major events in the error memory.

As some calibration modes are also used for safety checks, the
calibration modes are also referred to as PSC (Periodically Safety
Check) modes. The Bipolar display first reads PSC when the PSC
modes are started.

5.1.1 Starting the PSC mode

1. Press program keys 1 and 2 simultaneously and turn on the unit
(mains switch). Wait until user mode is completed.

2. You can toggle between PSC and user modes by repeatedly

pressing program keys 1 and 2 simultaneously.

No self test is performed (vital for troubleshooting).

3. Before switch of the unit leave the PSC correctly towards the
user mode. Otherwise the unit will produce an error (Err 74)
after switch on again. In this case the unit has to be boot again
in PSC mode as described before. Then leave the PSC mode
correctly.

5.2 Unit calibration

All unit calibration is done with the PSC modes without opening the
unit. There is a defect if it is not possible to set the required
calibration values. In such a case, you would normally have to
replace the RF generator PCB.

5.2.1 Required measuring instruments

The following measuring instruments are required:

Power meter for RF surgery units, e.g. EPM3 by MT-Med-Tech

 Resistor 4.7k, 10 W

 Resistor box, 0.5 W

Handpiece for monopolar cutting / coagulation, fingerswitch

 Double footswitch

 Cable set

2007-07-19 67

Settings in the service mode

5.2.2 Calibration of power monitor

The output power is monitored while the unit is active. The power
monitor turns off the unit and issues an error message if due to a
unit malfunction the output power exceeds the set value.

The compliance of the power measured by the power monitor with

the power measured by a calibrated RF power meter is tested.

Calibration:

1. Connect RF power meter to the patient electrode and the

monopolar handpiece (MBC200) or via a bipolar adapter and
forceps (BCC140) so that the output power can be measured.

2. Set the load on the RF power meter to 200 Ω (MBC200) or 100

Ω (BCC140).

3. Enable the PSC mode.

4. Go to the user mode and set Cut 200 W (MBC200) or 140 W

(BCC140).

5. Select PSC 5.0. The parameter display now reads the calibration
value.

6. Activate the unit with the handpiece button (MBC200) of the

footswitch (BCC140). The parameter display now reads the
power measured by the power monitor.

7. Compare the measured values of power monitor and RF power

meter.

8. Edit and save the parameter (calibration value), repeat the test
until the measured values of power monitor and RF power
meter match if deviations are found (tolerance: +/-5%).

9. Quit the PSC mode.

HINWEIS!
Make sure to activate the correct bipolar output
with the BCC140 footswitch.

Settings in the service mode

5.2.3 RF power calibration

This step is required if the measured output power deviates from
the display reading. Heed the correct setting of the load resistance
to prevent power output errors because the RF current or RF voltage
limits are reached!

Calibration:

1. Wiring and load resistance of the RF power meter as in section

Calibration of power monitor.
2. Power setting as in section Calibration of power monitor.

3. Select PSC 4.5.

4. Correct by editing and saving the parameter if the power

deviates from the value set before (200 W for MBC200 or 140 W
for BCC140).

5. Quit the PSC mode.

Settings in the service mode

5.2.4 Calibrating the RF current limitation

The current limitation is globally calibrated for all operating modes
and powers. Deviations of the current limitation influence the lower
ranges of the power curves. For calibration, the short-circuit current
in the “Coagulation Monopolar Soft” (MBC200) or “Coagulation
bipolar Soft” (BCC140) mode is adjusted. To measure the short-
circuit current, set the power at 25 Ω (Coagulation Monopolar Soft)
or 10 Ω (Coagulation Bipolar Soft).

Calibration:

1. Connect and set the RF power meter as described in section RF-

power calibration.
2. Set the load resistance to 25 Ω (MBC200) or 10 Ω (BCC140).

3. Select PSC 4.6.

4. Activate the unit as in section RF-power calibration and

calibrate to the following values by editing the parameter:

Unit Load [Ω
[ Ω] Calibration

MBC200 25 Ω 1.4 A (equals 49 W)

BCC140 10 Ω 2 A (equals 40 W)

5.2.5 Testing the arc regulation

To test, connect a circuit comprising a load resistor and a resistor-
capacitor-diode network to the RF output. Due to non-linearities,
this circuit causes harmonics in the current profile resembling the
effect of an arc during tissue dissection when the RF generator is
activated. In PSC mode 4.0 you can edit the threshold for harmonics
(distortion factor) where RF voltage reduction starts. The message
“Monopolar Coag” (MBC200) or “Bipolar Coag 1” (BCC140) indicates
that the arc limit value has been reached. The threshold starting at
which the limit value is reached must lie in a specific window. When
the threshold lies outside this window, the arc regulation is faulty
and the RF generator PCB must be replaced.

Calibrati
Calibration:

1. Set Cut monopolar 100 W (MBC200) or Cut bipolar1 100 W

(BCC140).

2. Connect the “arc regulation” test device between handpiece

and patient electrode (MBC200) or to the forceps (via the
Bipolar 1 socket on BCC140).

3. Select PSC 4.0, set the parameter to 10.

4. Activate cutting with the fingerswitch (MBC200) or footswitch

(MBC140) (yellow pushbutton or footswitch).

5. Increment/decrement the parameter until the activation

indicator underneath the Coag display lights up / goes out. The
transition (parameter) where the indication toggles must be:

Unit Threshold

MBC200 8 – 12

BCC140 6–8

5.2.6 Calibrating the switching thresholds of the bipolar automatics

In the automatic mode (Auto key is lit), the RF generator is started at
very low power (less than 1 W) and voltage. This is the “ready mode”.
The RF generator switches to the active mode where the set power is
output when the RF current reaches a particular threshold (equalling
a load resistance of 100 Ω).

The RF generator switches back from the active to the ready mode
when the RF current reaches a particular threshold (equalling a load
resistance of 8000 Ω).

Both the switch on and switch off thresholds must be calibrated. Do

this with PSC 7.0 and 7.1.

Calibration:

1. Connect the bipolar adapter with forceps.

2. Set a Bipolar Coag power of 10 W and enable the automatics on

the respective bipolar output (Auto key).

3. Select PSC 7.0. The generator now provides the parameters

(power and voltage) in the ready mode.

4. Connect a 100 Ω resistor. The measured current is now

indicated in the parameter display. It exactly equals the switch-
on threshold.

5. Save the displayed parameter

6. Connect a 8000 Ω resistor.

7. Select PSC 7.1 (Caution: the generator now supplies the set
power).

8. The measured current is now indicated in the parameter

display. It exactly equals the switch-off threshold.

9. Save the displayed parameter.

5.2.7 Calibrating the patient electrode

electr ode monitor (MBC200 only)
The patient electrode monitor measures the resistance between the
separate parts of a split patient electrode. Depending on the
measured resistance, the patient electrode monitor indicates:

Signal Signification Resistance

Green & yellow Undivided patient less than 10 Ω

electrode

Green good contact between 10 Ω and 68 Ω

Yellow poor contact between 68 Ω and 100 Ω

Red & alarm insufficient contact higher than 100 Ω

The patient electrode monitor issues an alarm and switches the unit
off when the current difference between the patient electrode
halves exceeds a particular value (250 mA).

The following is calibrated:

 Test oscillator frequency

The resistances where the patient electrode indicators toggle

The RF current difference causing an alarm

Calibration:

1. Connect the “patient electrode” cable (without patient

electrode) and a monopolar handpiece.

2. Set Coagulation Soft 50 W.

3. Select PSC 6.0. The parameter display indicates the oscillator

frequency (kHz).

4. Press the save key: The optimum oscillator frequency

(resonance) is determined and saved (with the “Auto” key).

5. Select PSC 6.1. The parameter display indicates the digital

oscillator preset. The preset must be set between 30 and 225.

6. Successively connect different test resistors to the patient

Troubleshooting and error elimination

6 Troubleshooting and error elimination

6.1 Eliminating malfunctions

The unit performs a self test after power-on. The unit is ready when
this self test has completed successfully. Each of the self test steps is
indicated as a number on the left (CUT) display. All controls are
locked and an error message is issued if a fatal error occurs during
the self test or during operation (system monitor). The left display
(Cut) indicates “err”, the next display (Coagulation) the error number
and the third display (Bipolar Coagulation for MBC200 or Bipolar Cut
2 for BCC140) the measured value resulting in the error. Error
number and measured value are major clues for troubleshooting.
This also applies to the error memory that holds the number of
warnings and errors.

1. Turn off the unit and on again after 10 seconds if an error

occurs during “normal” operation.
The unit is defective if repeated attempts to turn on the unit
should fail.

You can attempt to operate the unit in the PSC mode if an error
occurs during the self test since the self test is then bypassed.

Warning
Never use the unit on patient if self test has not
passed complete
comple te and correctly.

6.1.1 The error memory

Errors occurring frequently during the self test or during operation
could be caused by component aging or creeping errors. A
calibration in the PSC mode can remedy this in many cases. The
number of errors is stored in an error memory. Each error has an
entry of its own according to the error table. You can also retrieve
the number of power-on cycles from the error memory.

You can start reading the error memory with PSC mode 7 that
provides several subfunctions.

Troubleshooting and error elimination

6.2 Component replacement

DANGER!
Danger to life caused by electric current!
– Separate the unit from mains before opening it.
– Energized components can be touched when the
open unit is operated.
– Risk of accidents due to short-circuits and
contact with energized components when
making measurements at the open unit.

6.2.1 Opening the housing

To open the housing, unscrew the bottom plate (Phillips screws). A
yellow/green earthing cable connects the bottom plate with the
chassis. You can separate it by unscrewing the respective screws.

Radio frequency surgery units MBC200/BCC140

Troubleshooting and error elimination

6.2.2 Removing the power supply unit

The power supply unit comprises the power supply PCB and the
mains transformer. You can lift out and lay the entire power supply
unit aside without breaking any electrical connections (connectors)
after having unscrewed the 4 Phillips screws. You can thus test the
unit.

2 cables connect the power supply unit to the mains switch and the
RF generator PCB. A (screwed) protective earth cable connects the
aluminium plate with the chassis.

DANGER!
Danger to life caused by electric current!
The smoothing capacitors on the power supply PCB
can hold dangerous voltages (higher than 60 V) for a
longer period of time (up to one minute) after unit
power-off.

Residual voltages in the smoothing capacitors can damage the RF

generator PCB if you reverse the connector to the RF generator PCB
or plug it on with an offset.

2007-07-19 85
Radio frequency surgery units MBC200/BCC140

Troubleshooting and error elimination

Instructions 1. We recommend that you first separate the 6-pole connector on

the RF generator PCB.

2. Then also separate the 6-pole connector on the power supply

PCB.

3. When reconnecting the cable, connect it to the power supply

PCB first.

4. Connect it to the RF generator PCB only then (the thicker side of

the connector points towards the capacitor)

Abb. 6 Supply unit removed

Troubleshooting and error elimination

6.2.3 Removing the rear panel

4 Phillips screws connect the rear panel with the chassis. The heat
sink is also fastened on the inside (2 self-locking M4 screws).

Instructions 1. First separate the cable of the fan motor on the PCB (J3).

2. The rear panel can then be opened to the rear by ca. 45°.

Abb. 7 Rear panel removed

6.2.4 Removing
Removing the heat sink
2 M4 Allen screws fasten the heat sink to the RF generator PCB. After
swinging down the rear wall, loosening these screws and separating
the connector to the RF generator PCB you can take off the heat sink.

Troubleshooting and error elimination

6.2.5 Removing the RF generator PCB

6 self-locking M4 nuts fasten the RF generator PCB to the chassis.
Connectors are used to link the RF generator PCB and the power
supply PCB, the sockets, the test resistor and the loudspeaker.

1. Lift out the RF generator PCB carefully after having unscrewed

the screws and unplugged the connectors.

New PCBs are supplied on an exchange basis; they come aligned,

with the latest firmware and have been tested.

Caution:

Do not lose the cardboard washers

 Heed the serrated washer

6.2.6 Removing the

t he display PCB
8 self-locking M3 nuts secure the display PCB to the chassis. Springs
underneath the PCB push it against the screws. This allows the PCB’s
distance to the housing front to be exactly adjusted so that the keys
can be easily actuated through the front foil.

Caution:

Adjust the distance between PCB and housing front after assembly
so that the keys can be easily actuated through the front foil.
