The document is a soil investigation report for a proposed construction project in Porbandar, Gujarat, India. It details the field work conducted, including two boreholes and one trial pit drilled to depths of up to 10 meters. Laboratory tests were performed on soil samples. The soil consists of silty sand overlying completely to highly weathered limestone. No groundwater was observed. Based on rock mass rating calculations, the recommended safe bearing capacity for shallow foundations is 30-35 tonnes/m2 depending on depth. In conclusions, the report recommends shallow foundations be used with a minimum 0.5m embedment in the rock.

1.0 INTRODUCTION:

Gujarat State Police Housing Corporation Limited, Junagadh, proposes Soil

investigation work for proposed construction of D.Y.S.P. Office Building at Porbandar,
Near Sandipani Ashram, Tal.: & Dist.: Porbandar, Gujarat State.

The purpose of the investigations was to determine the sub soil stratification,
geotechnical information & safe bearing capacity of the soil, so as to provide information
that will assist the structural engineers in the design of the foundations and the relevant
works.

The Job was carried out wide your work order No: GU.PO.HA. E.E./ M.K.
Soil/1316/13 dated: 23/09/2013 under the guidance and supervision of the soil personnel
of M.K. Soil Testing Laboratory and client’s engineer.

2.0 FIELD WORK:

2.1 Borehole:

Two boreholes having 150mm diameter were drilled using Rotary drilling method
upto 10.0m depth below existing ground level (EGL). One trial pit was excavated upto
1.50m depth below EGL.

The Locations of boreholes and trial pit were decided with due consideration of
Client/Consultant of the project.

The locations of the boreholes and trial pit are shown in location plan no. MK/8/10-13LP.

2.2 Collection of Samples:

Undisturbed soil samples were not collected in the thin walled sampling tubes in
accordance with IS: 2132-1981 for finding shear parameter, field density, moisture content
etc. due to hard or rocky strata. However, disturbed soil samples were collected for
determining the properties of soil. The samples from spilt spoon sampling tubes were
treated as disturbed soil samples.

Job No: MK/8/10-13 M. K. Soil Testing Laboratory, Ahmedabad – 54

2.3 Standard Penetration Test:

The standard penetration tests were performed in accordance with IS: 2131:1981
using the standard split spoon sampler & 63.5Kg hammer at intervals as suggested by
client. The N-values for 30cm penetration of the standard penetration test results are
shown in table no.1 at the end of the report. The corrections for overburden pressure are
applied to N-value.

3.0 LABORATORY WORK :

The results of the laboratory tests performed on various soil samples are presented
in the form of Table No. 2/1 to 2/3 and drawing No: MK/8/10-13DBH at the end of report.

4.0 SOIL STRATIFICATIONS:

Field and laboratory test data reveal the general stratification as under:

6.0 TYPICAL CALCULATION OF SAFE BEARING CAPACITY ON ROCK:

The subsoil in general consists of top layer of non plastic silty sand underlain by
completely to highly weathered very poor lime stone upto 10.0m termination depth below
EGL. Considering subsoil condition shallow foundation – footing foundation and raft
foundation are proposed on rock layer. SBC of this shallow foundation based on RMR is
estimated and reported.

Bearing Capacity (Based on Rock mass rating (RMR) (IS 13365 (p-I) : 1998)

6.1 Obtaining RMR (Depth : 1.00m to 3.00m)

Sr. Description Condition Rating

2. Rock Quality Designation Very Poor 3
3. Spacing of Discontinuities Very Close 5
4. Condition of Discontinuity 5mm thick soft gauge 0
5. Ground Water Condition Considering Wet 7
6. Orientation of discontinuity Fair -7
RMR 8

RMR value obtained is 8 for which as per IS: 12070-1987 the safe bearing capacity is
obtained as 36 t/m2 without exceeding total settlement 12mm.

7.1 GENERAL RECOMMENDATION FOR FOUNDATION ON ROCK:

This recommended safe bearing capacity on rock given in the above table are applicable
for all size of foundations isolated foundation, strip footings and raft foundation. It also
considers maximum permissible settlement of 12mm as per IS: 13063:1991.

If at the time of actual excavation major cavities are found, the depth of foundation shall be
taken to a level such that 80% rock area is available. It must be ensured that any part of
footing / raft does not overhang. If loose pockets of disintegrated rock are found at few
places same shall be cleaned and backfilled with lean concrete. Sufficient care shall be
taken to remove loosened pieces of rock from foundation, washing and air jetting has been
done, so that foundation rests on practically undisturbed rock mass.

7.2 Foundation Level Preparation

The exposed foundation bearing surface should be compacted properly using light manual
rammers / rollers. The surface should then be protected from disturbances due to
construction activities so that the foundations may bear on the natural undisturbed ground.
For all shallow foundations, we recommend the placement of a 75 to 100mm thick
“bedding layer” of lean concrete to facilitate placement of reinforcing steel and to protect
the soils from disturbance.

For foundations resting on rock all loose, weathered or fragmented rock should be
removed so that foundations may bear on the firm rock. The foundation should be seated
at least 0.5m in to the rock formation.

Also there is possibility of undulation in bed rock levels. In such condition for open
foundation adjacent by each other the level difference shall be adjusted by provision of
lean concrete layer below the footing wherever required.

8.0 CONCLUSIONS & RECOMMENDATIONS:

(8.1) Soil Investigation work for proposed construction of D.Y.S.P. Office Building at
Porbandar is observed to consist of non plastic silty sand with gravel followed by
completely to highly weathered very poor lime stone upto 10.00m termination depth
below EGL.

Ground water table was not observed in the boreholes/trial pit upto termination
depth below EGL at the time of investigation. (September - 2013)

(8.2) The net safe bearing capacity for open foundation at 1.0m to 3.0m depth with
minimum 0.50m embedment in rock is recommended vide para 7 of report. General
recommendation for foundation on rock is given vide para 7.1 of report.

(8.3) The sandy soil having non swelling potential hence it is suitable to use for
back/plinth filling purpose.

(8.4) The results of the laboratory tests are incorporated in the form of table at the later
part of the report.
