Everglades Wetlands

BY: Jouri Alghannam

Introduction
What are wetlands exactly? You may come to believe that a wetland is just a swamp or
a marsh. Marshes are well-nutrient wetlands that support a variety of reeds and grasses,
while swamps are defined by their ability to support woody plants and trees.

But inside that wetland umbrella, there there are five different main categories
belonging underneath that topic. There are riverine, slope depressional , flat and fringe

Now going into detail this PowerPoint is about the Everglades . Let's begin!
Location
Natural region of tropical wetlands in the southern portion of the U.S of
Florida,Often compared to a grassy, slow-moving river, the Everglades is
made up of coastal mangroves, sawgrass marshes and pine flatwoods that
are home to hundreds of animal species.
Climate/Temperature
The Everglades is mild and pleasant from
December through April, though rare cold fronts
may create near freezing conditions. Average
temperatures in winter - High 77F (25C); Low 53F
(12C).
Summers are hot and humid, with temperatures
around 90F (32C) and humidity over 90%.
Afternoon thunderstorms are common and
mosquitoes are abundant.
The Atlantic Hurricane Season is June-November.
Tropical storms or hurricanes may affect the area.
Average Rainfall: 60 inches (152 cm) per year. The
rainy season is June through October (mosquito
season coincides with the rainy season).
Precipitation
Precipitation in the Everglades. On average, the Everglades precipitation levels on an
annual basis are 52.10 inches. The wetter season usually occurs in the summer months,
whereas in the winter time, rain is less prevalent.

Average rainfall: 60 inches (152 cm) per year; Rainy season: May through September
(mosquito season coincides with the rainy season)
Plants
❖ Black Mangrove (Trees)
❖ Butterfly Pea (Trees)
❖ White Fragrant water lily (Trees)
❖ Cattail (trees)
❖ Wildflowers
❖ Cacti/Succulents
❖ Bromeliads
Natural disasters
There are lots of hurricanes and rain everglades and lots of flooding because of all the
rain and it is wiping out all the animal habitats, the federal officers have a plan to
move some water out of the Everglades water conservation areas.
Habitats
In the Everglades, there are different habitats for many animals

❖ Gator Holes-they are very important habitats for birds, fish, frogs and turtles, the
animals in the gator holes give the mammals in the dry season, but if the
mammals try to get too close to the gator holes they could get eaten by an
alligator.
❖ The muddy ground makes a good place to grow shrubs and trees
❖ The ponds they have are a good place for Alligators to live there too
Animals
In the Everglades, there are animals that live in land and water.

Land.
Water
● Raccoon. ● Florida cricket frog
● Skunk ● Squirrel treefrog
● Alligators
● Opossum
● Crocodiles
● Eastern cottontail bobcat ● Manatees
● Red fox ● Turtles
● White- tail deer ● Bottlenose dolphin
Natural resources
❏ 137 miles of coastline
❏ 484,200 acres in Florida bay and the Gulf of Mexico
❏ 572,200 acres of sawgrass/freshwater marsh
❏ 230,100 acres of mangrove forest
❏ 220,000 acres of coastal areas

They have all that land to grow things and catch fish and etc...
Human presence and impact
Many animals in the Everglades are used to wet and dry seasons but humans can
control the water and don't time it correctly according to the animals. Snail Kites feed
on the aquatic apple snail and low water lessens the apple and snail kite populations,
the snail ay above water in the wet season.
Fun facts
● Everglades is actually a river(sort of)

● Everglades provide over 7 million drinking water supply to Floridians

● Everglades is the home of 13 endangered species

● It's the largest mangrove ecosystem in the Western Hemisphere

● Home of 10 threatened species

● The ecosystems symbol is the Florida panther
