CREATING

“True patriotism hates injustice in its own land more than anywhere else”. You tend to make

sacrifices just to get the freedom that you wanted. It is not all the time that the answer of which is

to have a revolution. Sometimes one’s great action is a big help, just like how Rizal fought for

our country’s liberty.

As I read the novel Noli Me Tangere, it emphasizes the protagonist which is Crisostomo Ibarra

because he is part of a prominent family yet chooses to use his position to improve the lives of

the less fortunate in the society which he lives. In this historical novel of Rizal, we can see

tensions in our society today driven by divisions in class, wealth and power. This novel makes us

see the Philippine society, the corrupt and also the brutal colonial rule of Spain. The issues

present in colonial society were clearly illustrated in both individual interactions such as Padre

Damaso’s role in murder of Don Rafael Ibarra, Crisostomo Ibarra’s father which happens before

the novel started and provided the energy motivating the novel’s character. The issues are also

reflected in the larger social movements as reflected in the rebellion against the Spanish rule that

Crisostomo Ibarra is accidentally embroiled in by the rebels. Whether individual actions or the

mass movements of people. The individual affect movements and movements affect and

constrain individuals in a society on the verge of rapid change.

Noli Me Tangere regarded as a classic of Philippine literature with its ability to graphically

describe the various levels in Philippine society with its memorable characters. Its description of

the cruelty of Spanish rule may have inspired a rising consciousness in the Philippines that led to

the independence movement from Spain. This novel will surely open up one’s mind about

oppression and tyranny.
