Identifying Parts and Features of Argumentative Essay

An ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY attempts to be highly persuasive and logical.

It usually assumes that the reader disagrees with the writer, but it should be
noted that the reader is no less than intelligent than the writer. Hence, an
argumentative essay should be written objectively and logically.

An argumentative essay includes the following:

 presents and explains the issue or case;

 gives reasons and supports these reasons should prove its point;
and
 refute (proves wrong) opposing arguments

Parts of Argumentative Essay

Introduction
First is the introductory paragraph. It introduces the
problem and gives the background information needed for the
argument and the thesis statement.

Body
The body of the essay contains the reasons. Each
paragraph talks about one reason. The reason is included in the
topic sentence and is supported by details or materials. These
supporting materials can be examples, statistics, personal
experiences, or quotations.

Conclusion
The conclusion restates the main claim and gives one or
two general statements which exactly summarize the arguments
and support the main premise.

Are People Too Dependent on Mobile Phones?

INTRODUCTION

Mobile phones have become a must-have in our modern society. They have become a
central application to a variety of aspects and not just regular conversations. After having been
invented as a device that would connect people while on the move, mobile phones have become
much more in the last decade. It is not possible to watch videos, listen to music, and much more.
However, there is a hint that these devices are starting to occupy much bigger roles in our life so
much to the point that mobile phone addiction has become a new section in our dictionary.
REASON 1

The reason behind the tremendous growth in mobile phones has been down to a reason,
as they have changed the way communication has been perceived by humans. Mobile devices
permit rapid communication in all forms and they have truly made the world a smaller place.

Rather than just vocal communication from a couple of decades ago, it is not possible to
REASON 2

use a mobile device to send location, pictures, and videos. Crucially, they have become flexible in
this department with something for everyone. Mobile phones are a godsend for long-distance
relationships, while they help accomplish business tasks even when the whole mass of the Earth is
in between. Mobile devices have also become a crucial device in safety, as statistical data reveals
BODY

that Americans use mobile devices in 74% of the distress calls.

Modern society has embraced mobile phones in a big way but it has come at a cost.
REASON 3

Today, the whole essence of socialism has been transformed into a tiny device that occupies the
palm of your hand. There is an overwhelming dependence on mobile devices even for basic actions
like knowing the time, as these mobile devices have become multifaceted.
The addiction to mobile phones has become such a huge problem that people tend to be
glued to phones even when communication is not taking place. This is because mobile phones
REASON 4

The huge impact of mobile devices can be summed up with one basic action: people
checking their mobile devices for new text messages even when they have not received anything.
People are subconsciously thinking only about receiving new content on the devices and it is
starting to the society quite badly.

Mobile devices have truly made our life much more convenient, but they have also
CONCLUSION

brought together plenty of health issues. Superficially, mobile devices may appear to improve the
quality of life but they are slowly consuming society as a whole. While it is not feasible or possible
to do more mobile devices from our daily life, people should start showing more seriousness to the
problem that rests in our pocket. Mobile phones have become the medium through which
anxiousness, irritability, depression, nervousness, loneliness, frustrations, and stressfulness spreads
around us. It is of paramount importance to limit their usage.

Directions: Read the passage below and outline on your answer sheet the different
parts of an argumentative essay using the given illustration as a guide.
The Importance of Discipline

Discipline is something that we have all experienced personally in different forms, seen
used on others, and is also something that many of us will go on to use later in life, both in the
form of self-discipline and as something to keep children and even employees in check. It is
essential to life as we know it, and we need it in its many different forms in many different
situations.

The first reason that discipline is so important is that we all need to exercise self-
discipline to be successful in life. Self-discipline can mean very different things to different
people; for students, for example, self-discipline is often about motivating yourself and making
yourself concentrate on your studies and get your assignments in on time. For working people,
it can be as simple as getting up on time every morning, however, tired you may be and how
much you may hate your job, getting to work on time and doing your job. Without this kind of
self-discipline, people would not be able to enjoy academic success or be successful in their
careers either.

Self-discipline is also required for dieters and anyone doing regular exercise, because
given the chance, most of us would prefer to be lazy rather than get up and exercise, and eat
burgers and fries rather than healthy food. Without it, even more, people would be fat and
unhealthy, and a lack of self-discipline in some people certainly contributes to the obesity crisis.

Discipline is also something that needs to be used on others where necessary. If parents
didn’t discipline their children when they were naughty, children wouldn’t grow up knowing
right from wrong or be able to become productive members of society who contribute to the
system. Equally, schoolteachers need to be able to dish out punishments to children who don’t
behave themselves. Without discipline in the classroom, there would be a great deal of
disruption and nobody would ever learn anything. Indeed, teachers who struggle to command
the respect of students and who fail to use discipline effectively will often have trouble even
making themselves heard in a classroom.

In the workplace, discipline is also essential to maintaining a hierarchy and dealing with
employees who do not follow company policies and procedures, regularly arrive late or not at
all, or treat their co-workers unfairly. Then, you have to consider that without discipline, there
would be no law enforcement. Murderers would be roaming the streets and everybody would
be stealing from each other because there would be no consequences for their actions.

Discipline acts as a vital deterrent to stop children from being naughty, people from
missing work, and even potential criminals from stealing and killing, and for this reason, it is
vital in human society.
