OVERVIEW OF YANGQIN 6
5. Overview of YANGQIN
YANGQIN offers a comprehensive yet intuitive interface suitable for both intricate performances
as well as quick-starting ideas. The instrument’s interface and features are divided into five views:
Perform, Scale, Mixer, Mapping, and Options, which can be accessed via the Navigation bar visible
in the Main View.
5.1. Navigation
YANGQIN contains five control pages, which are accessible from the tabs at the bottom of the
instrument's interface. The controls available on each page can be found in their own chapters in
this manual.
• Tremolo Slider: Changes the amount of tremolo applied to the instrument. When the slider is
on the left side, no tremolo is added to the performance. Move the slider to the right to
increase the intensity of the tremolo effect. The value can also be adjusted with the mod wheel
(default control: CC1) of your MIDI keyboard.
• Sound Notes Damp: Dampens all notes that are currently playing. Damping can also be
performed by using the keyswitch B1.
OVERVIEW OF YANGQIN 8
• Tremolo Auto Enables you to play all notes as tremolo when the Tremolo slider is slightly
above minimum.
YANGQIN includes four tremolo articulations in total. The Tremolo slider can be used to control the
sustained Tremolo articulation. The Tremolo slider does not affect the remaining three tremolo
articulations (Trem Short, Trem Oct, and Trem Velo), but they can be assigned to specific scale
notes using the Scale Editor. For more information, see Scale Editor.

PERFORM VIEW 13
7. Perform View
The Perform view is displayed when YANGQIN is loaded into KONTAKT or KONTAKT PLAYER. The
view contains Instrument Controls, which can be used to adjust the sound and dynamics of the
instrument, as well as the Phrases feature.
7.2. Phrases
YANGQIN includes a selection of phrases. These are MIDI sequences that can be loaded and
manipulated by the phrase engine. The phrases are a great way to showcase and explore
YANGQIN's rhythmic and melodic capabilities in both traditional and contemporary styles. The
phrases can be also used together with the Scale tools, providing a quick way to get inspired by
musical ideas typical for the instrument.
PERFORM VIEW 14
Phrase selection
To select a phrase:
PERFORM VIEW 15

Intensity is always stored in the MIDI file, so the dynamics you hear are always
included in the exported pattern.
▶ Click on the Edit button in the Phrase section of the Perform view.
→ The Phrase Editor and Phrase Browser view will open over the instrument picture.
The Phrase Editor and Browser view are divided into two main sections.
Phrase Editor
The Phrase Editor includes controls for muting parts of the phrase pattern, adjusting the end and
start position of the phrase, choosing whether the phrase is retriggered automatically, adjusting
the velocity of the active phrase, and shifting the phrase notes up or down the scale.
2. Pattern Editor: Represents beats (either quarter note or 8th note) using dots. A filled dot
displays note activity for that beat. Click a dot to mute the note activity of the respective beat
within the phrase.
Phrase Editor Controls: The Phrase Editor also contains controls that define some general
playback options for the phrase (2–6).
PERFORM VIEW 18
3. Start: Adjusts the phrase start position. The number displayed indicates the first beat of the
phrase
4. End: Adjusts the phrase end position. The number displayed indicates the final beat of the
phrase.
5. Retrigger: If set to Off, the Phrase plays from the start.
6. Adjust Velocity: Changes the velocity of the active phrase. Note that the overall velocity of the
phrases can be changed using the Intensity control.
7. Shift Notes: Shifts the notes of the phrase up or down within the scale.
Phrase Browser
In the lower section of the Phrase Editor and Browser view is the Phrase Browser. You can use this
to browse through an extensive collection of phrases as well as load them.
To load a phrase:
1. Browse through the folder system until you find the *.mid file you wish to load.
2. Double-click on the file name.
→ The pattern will be loaded into the currently selected pattern slot.
Folder names in the Phrase Browser provide information about the scale, tempo, and
key of each phrase.
SCALE VIEW 19
8. Scale View
YANGQIN features a selection of scales that provide a great starting point for musical ideas. The
Scale page includes controls for loading, editing, and customizing scales.
1. Scale: Click the Scale name to display the list of scale presets included in YANGQIN.
2. Root: The Root indicator displays the root note of the scale. Use the up and down arrows to
change the root note of the scale up or down in one semitone increments.
3. Ornament: Activate the Ornament button to play all notes with their designated ornament type.
When the Ornament button is deactivated, notes are not remapped and all non-
scale notes can be played (for instance, the full chromatic range).
The Scale Editor includes a number of options for adjusting each scale degree in terms of note
remapping, ornaments, and tuning.
1. Input Note Display: Displays the note that is played on the MIDI keyboard.
2. Select by MIDI: Selects the played scale degree automatically when the respective MIDI note
is played. Deactivate to keep the scale degree options locked in at the selected note
3. Note Function: Changes the note function between a scale note and a non-scale note.
4. Remap Note: Remaps the note to either the lower or upper scale note when a non-scale note
is played.
5. Ornament Type: Assigns an ornament to each scale of the degree. Select an ornament for the
specified note. An ornament symbol is displayed for every active ornament assignment, either
between the note name and the stave or near the notehead.
6. Tuning: Adjusts the tuning of each degree of the scale. Drag to set the tuning of the specified
scale degree in cents.
7. Staff: Displays each note of the scale on horizontal lines. Whole notes depict scale notes,
while cue sized notes depict either non-scale notes or remapped notes.
8. X: Exits the Scale Editor.
9. Copy and Paste Scale: Copy and pastes scale settings. Use these buttons to copy scale
settings between different scale preset slots.
The upper row of notes of the Scale Editor implicates the note that is played on the MIDI keyboard.
The notes belonging to the C Maj Pentatonic scale are C, D, E, G, and A.
When a C note is played on the MIDI keyboard, this is played back as C, which is the root note of
the C Maj Pentatonic Scale
SCALE VIEW 22
When a C note is played on the MIDI keyboard, the note played back is C, which is the root note of
the C Maj Pentatonic scale.
The next note on the MIDI keyboard is C. As C is not part of the C Maj Pentatonic scale, YANGQIN’s
Scale Editor controls allow multiple ways for the instrument to interpret a C note played on the
keyboard.
Remap
Use the Remap controls to play the C input note in the C Maj Pentatonic scale, either by remapping
the note to the lower scale note (C) or higher scale note (D).
3. Click the Upper or Lower button to remap the note into a scale note.
→ Depending on the chosen option, the C note played on the MIDI keyboard is played back as
either a lower scale note (C) or a higher scale note (D).
The first note of the scale (the root note) can not be remapped.
Ornaments
Ornaments are used to decorate and add authenticity to a musical performance by adding extra
notes or using other expressive techniques. YANGQIN includes 10 different ornaments: Short,
Octave, Trem Short, Trem Oct, Trem Velo, Tremolo, Gliss Up, Gliss Down, Sound Var, and Reso.
The C in the aforementioned example can also be used for playing ornaments.
SCALE VIEW 23
→ The C note played on the MIDI keyboard is played with the selected ornament.
The Ornaments button must be switched on in order for the ornaments to be played.
When the Ornament button is deactivated, notes are not remapped and all non-scale
notes can be played (for instance, the full chromatic range).
Ornaments can also be activated using keyswitches. To learn more about keyswitches and their
locations, see Mapping.
Remap and Ornament controls can also be used simultaneously. For example, you
can remap the C MIDI note to be played as a lower scale note C, with an ornament, as
well as with a custom tuning using the Tuning control.
YANGQIN’s Scale Editor provides many ways to build and customize your own scales. Here is an
example where a C MIDI note has been remapped to be played as a lower scale note C, with a
Gliss Up ornament and a +17 cent custom tuning.
SCALE VIEW 24
▶ Click and drag the Tuning control up or down to change the tuning of the scale degree.
The Tuning control can be used to change the tuning offset of all notes in the scale.
1. In the middle position, the scale tuning as set in the scale page is applied.
2. Turn the Tuning Amount control all the way to the right to double the tuning offset of the
tuning amount set on the scale editor. For example, if the amount for a note is set to +13 cents
and the Tuning Amount is set to 2x, the total amount of tuning offset of note will be +26.
SCALE VIEW 25
3. Turn the Tuning Amount control to the left to decrease the amount of tuning offset. When
turned all the way to the left, no tuning offset is applied to the scale notes.
2. Alternatively, click the root note to display and select the root note of the scale.
3. Click the Global button to apply the displayed root note to all scales, or the Scale button to
apply the root note only to the selected scale.
1. Click a folder within the Scale Browser to display the scales in the respective scale type group.
1. Click Copy when viewing the scale you want to copy to another Scale Preset slot.
SCALE VIEW 27
2. Click the Scale Preset drop-down selector to select a Scale Preset slot you want to load the
scale into.
3. Click Paste to copy the Scale from the clipboard into the active Scale Preset slot.
→ The Scale Preset is replaced with the copied scale, along with all earlier changes made into the
copied scale.
MIXER VIEW 28
9. Mixer View
The Mixer page includes the controls for altering the sound of the instrument via volume levels,
effect parameters, and other controls.
Use the Sound Preset selector to quickly change the sound of the instrument,
including the Mixer settings.
MIXER VIEW 29
▶ Click the Inst button below the Channel Strip’s Level Fader to show the effect controls.
9.2. Reverb
The Reverb effect simulates the natural reverberation that occurs when a sound source is placed
in an acoustic environment, thus adding a feeling of spaciousness to the sound.
The Reverb page consists of two main sections: the Reverb Channel section includes the controls
for adjusting the volume level, size, and pre-delay of the Reverb, and the Reverb Effect section is
for selecting the Reverb type, for instance, the convolution-based acoustic environment in which
the instrument is placed. For more information, see Reverb Channel and Reverb Effect.
The lower section of the Mixer will display a series of images, each representing a different reverb
type.
For the YANGQIN library, there are five different spaces available: Room, Studio, Club, Theatre, and
Temple.
10. Mapping
The Mapping page displays information on notes, keyswitches, phrases, and how they are mapped
on the MIDI keyboard.
The Performance Keys are deactivated when the extended playing range of
YANGQIN is enabled.
7. Reso: Use the Reso range (C5 to A6) to play notes in resonant articulation.
The Reso range is deactivated when the extended playing range of YANGQIN is
enabled.
