PLANT SET-UP NEEDS

The following are suggestions for achieving a smooth start-up

Thank you for your Crusher order

** If the plant is damaged in transit you must note it on bill ofIading before signing. If
you do not note the damage, you will not be able to make a claim with the freight
company for any necessary repairs.

I) It is of utmost importance to have a level, compact site on which to set up your

plant. this will avoid undue plant vibration and possible breakage due to excessive "rock
and roll".

2) Have an adequate quantity of sound hardwood blocking and shim material to set
up the plant Shimming the blocking will be necessary during the first few weeks of
operation on a new site due to settling. This is necessary even on the best of level,
compact sites. Blocking adjustment is the plant owner's responsibility.

3) Have you arranged a power supply for the plant? If you did not purchase a
generator from CEC or the local dealer, please make sure the generator or line power is
sizcd properly and available when the plant arrivcs.

4) If you purchased electrical panels £i'om CEC or their local dealer, have you
arranged for elcctrical cord to run from your power supply to the elcctrical boxcs? Cables
are 110t supplied unless purchased. Customer needs to supply own clectrician to connect

7) You will need plant assembly labor during assembly process. CEC will provide a
technician to assist in the assembly process, your local dealer will have a service technician
on site also during this process. For training of maintenance and general plant knowledge
the customer must provide the assembly crew. CEC is not responsible for omissions in
plant orders or performance of your people.

8) Once the plant is running, you will need to retighten all bolts on the plant. This
procedure and frequency are called out in your plant manual.

9) Lubrication of the crusher: grease and oil are the least expensive items that you
will ever buy for the crusher, but they have an enormous effect on the long term reliability
and operation cost of the plant. Read the lubrication portion of your manual, and follow
the recommendations of your start up technician who will review the lubrication process
with you.

10) CEC's technician can not begin the set up process until the site is properly
prepared, power and cables are available, lifting equipment is available, blocking is on site,
and proper personnel are on site for erection.

11) Read the manual! The manual contains maintenance recommendations and
intervals which are necessary for maintaining your warranty, and a trouble shooting log
which was designed to save you hours of downtime. It also contains an operator's log
which should be filled out daily. This log will familiarize the operator with the plant and
will provide invaluable troubleshooting data if a problem should arise.

the above pointers are designed to help your new plant start up to go smootWy. Please
db not hesitate to contact CEC or their local dealer with any questions that you have.
Thank: you again for your plant order.

PLANT SET UP

RE: BLOCKING THE PLANT

TO INSURE PROPER OPERATION OF THE PLANT, BLOCKING IS VERY

IMPORTANT.

HAVE AN ADEQUATE QUANTITY OF HARDWOOD BLOCKING AND SHIM

MATERIAL TO SET UP THE PLANT. SHIMMING THE BLOCKING WILL BE
NECESSARY DURING ,THE FIRST FEW WEEKS OF OPERATION ON A NEW JOB
SITE DUE TO SETTLING. THIS IS NECESSARY EVEN ON THE BEST, OF
LEVEL, COMPACT SITES.

PERIODIC INSPECTION OF THE BLOCKING SHOULD BE PART OF A DAILY

ROUTINE MJI.INTENANCE PROGRAM AND IF ANY PROBLEM W.ITH THE
BLOCKING IS FOUND, IT SHOULD BE SCHEDULED FOR REPAIR AS SOON AS
POSSIBLE.

REMEMBER POOR OR INADEQUATE BLOCKING CAN CAUSE:

1. INEFFICIENT CRUSHING & SCREENING

2• WELDS TO BREAK
3. HIGHER MAINTENANCE COSTS
4. MORE DOWN TIME
5. INJURY AND EVEN DEATH

BLOCKING ADJUSTMENT IS THE PUliiT OWNER'S RESPONSIBILITY.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

CARE OF THE SCREEN

To insure efficient operation of the screen, it is recom-

mended that the operator inspect, lubricate and make
necessary adjustments and repairs at regular intervals.
The following intervals outlined for the operator are to
be done after a given period of operation, and the actual
instructions for the care and servicing are referred to
in the section of the manual under which they are covered.

a. During operation.
Throughout the daily operating period the operator
should cl1eck for unusual sounds or other signs of
abnormal operation that warn of future trouble if
if not properly corrected.

(1) Bearings. Check screen bearings for overheating. Do

not operate screen if bearings overheat.
PROCEDURE BEFORE OPERATING THE SCREEN:

Before being put into use, the new screen ShCI\lld be tllor-
oughly inspected to be certain tllat no damage tlBS occurred
in shipment that would impair its full operation. Inspect
all bolts and cap screws to be sur"e that they are tigllt
before starting operation. The screen assembly is :ompletely
lubric2ted before leaving factoro/, however, it is &dvisable
tel check (,il level in the screell. On tIle 60nlm,70mm and 100mm

WIRE SCREEN
The screen decks that support the wire screens in the
screen box are crowned so that the center of the screen is
is higher than the edges. This feature creates a more even
spread of material over the entire screen area and makes it
possible to draw the wire screen tight against the frames.

To protect the wire screens from wear due to the pounding

action of the material, crown rubber is installed between
the wire and screens and the supporting bars of the screen
frames.

TIGHTENING SCREEN WIRE

The tightening of screen wire is very important as loose
screen wire will cause unsatisfactory screening action and
shorten wire life.

(II Check to make sure that all crown rubber is in posi-

tion and in good corldition. Secure th~ crOWIl rlJbl)er
to the screen wire frame with pliable wit'e.

(2) C~J)tel' sub-SCreeJl wil'e if used irl SCI·~el·1 bf)X.

(3) Center screen wire in screen box.

(4) Assemble clamp t)a]~s 3Jld bolts.

(51 With a man On each side of the screen box, begin

tightening evenly, (see fig. 1) clamp rail bolts
which are directly across from each other. Tighten
the full length of the clamp rail and then repeat
the tightening procedure. With the final tightening
procedure, drive on clamp tlar with a hamlner on
either side of carriage bolts, because carriage
bolt heads will break.

(6) Re~leatthe above procedur~ on all sets of clanlp tl&rs

in screen box.

Tightening Screen \\"irc

P3g~ 8

Double and triple deck screens are engineered and built

to carry and screen large volumes of material per hour,
therefore the screen unit is designed with sufficient
action to satisfactorily handle this additional weight
of material. In some cases, when number products and
specifications change, screen wire is not required on
one of the screen decks. When this condition exists,
remove only tIle screen wire and replace the clamp rails.

OPERATIONAL TROUBLE-SHOOTING:

(A) Low capacity

(1) Incorrect speed or V-belt slippage

(2) Loose Screen wire

(3) Incorrect wire diameter in screen wire

(4) Intermittent or side feed of material

(5) Unnecessary l~ecirculation of material

(8) BEARING HEATING:

(1) Ollt of level crosswise

(2) Operating faster than recommeIlded

(3) Insufficient lutJricant

(4) Wrong lubricant

(5) Di)~ty lubricant

(6) Bearings failing

(7) Arced through bearings wit~1 welding macllir1e

(e) EXCESSIVE WIRE WEAR:

(1) Loose screen wire

(2) Rubtler cushions worn or missing

(3) Unnecessary recirculation of material

(4) Very abrasive material

SECTION III - LUBRICATION

GENERAL LUBRICATING INSTRUCTIONS:

Correct and systematic iubrication is the most important

factor contributing to the life and efficiency of any
piece of machinery in which friction is encountered.

Cleanliness in the handling of lubricants, fittings,

grease guns and the openings and plugs of housings is
of vital importance. Foreign substances such as dust,
dirt, abrasives, excessive moisture, etc., if allowed to
enter housings of enclosed bearings or gears will cause
premature failing of the parts operating in the contami-
nated lubricant. Be sure that all such fittings and
openings are thoroughly cleaned of all foreign substances
before starting to inject clean lubricant.

In using the grease gun see that the gun makes proper
contact with the cleaned fitting and that the nozzle has
not been allowed to touch unclean surfaces. Do not clean
fittings after lubricant has been injected, as the lubricant
left on the outside of the fitting aperture, where it can
be easily wiped off before again applying the grease gun.
Keep the gun full and be certain it is in proper working
condition and delivering lubricant. Three or four strokes
of the gun are sufficient to inject the proper amount of
lubricant.

SCREENS

The only bearings of the CEC-RD series screen requiring

lubrication are the two shaft bearings, one on each end
of the main shaft,

Lubricate the bearings on each side of the screen

unit with Chevron-Ultra Duty 2 lubricant in moder-
ate temperatures. For temperatures ranging below
plus 32 degrees fahrenheit use Chevron-Ultra Duty
1 lubricant. Lubrication fittings are provided to
facilitate lubrication of these bearings.

SECTION IV
MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS

SCOPE:

This section of the manual is intended to outline the

procedure of various operations necessary for proper main-
tenance of the CEC-RD series screen, as distinguished from
regular operational routine which is covered in the
"Operating Instructions" section.

The personnel responsible for maintenance should be thor-

oughly familiar with the general characteristics and oper-
ating principles of the screen. A study of sections I and
II of the manual is strongly recommended.

V-BELTS

Power is transmitted to the screen unit by matched V-belt

sets, from an electrical motor mounted near the screen
base. The number of belts will depend on the size and
capacity of the screen.
V-belt tension should be maintained at all times so that
no slippage with consequent loss of speed exists.

CAUTION: Keep all V-belts free from any accIJrnulation of

oil or grease. Oil not only ~las a deteriorating
effect on the belts, but Wllel) mixed with rock
dust, forms an abrasive compoulld tllat will pre-
maturely wear them out. Clean with a cloth
dipped in naptha. Do not use belt dressing on
V-belts.

V-BELT DRIVES

General:

The V-belts on the drives are matched sets and are coded or
marked with definite length ranges. Belts of different manu-
facturers sl10uld not be mixed because of this matching. Check
bel ts for proper size J length and cross-section.

INSTALLING V-BELTS:

Before installing new V-belts, check the condition of the

sheaves. Worn or damaged sheaves should be replaced. For
proper installation, loosen belt take-up completely,
permitting the belts to be positioned with minimum stress.
Never roll or force the belts over the sheave grooves,
always keep the slack of all belts on the same side. Slack
of some belts on top and others on bottom will cause immed-
iate irljury to ttle belts when tl"ley are tightened. During
tensioning and initial operations, the belts must be
stressed evenly to achieve full life expectancy.

ADJUSTING V-BELTS:

NOTE: More belt failures result from improper adjustment

during the first ]10ur of initial opel"ation than at
any subsequent period. Keep V-belts properly ten-
sioned for long belt life more ~fficiency.

Step 1:

Take up slack in belts, check position of sheave s11afts to

be sure they are parallel and check alignment of sheave
grooves. Start the drive and adjust tension until a slight
bow is seen on the slack side while operating under load.
When adjusting take-up; do not allow sheaves or idlers to
get out of alignment(Parallel and in-line).

Step 2:

After operating under load for 20 minutes. stop the drive

and measure the belt spall(See Fig. 2).

Using a spring scale or pencil type tension tester. apply

a force to anyone of tllE belts in the center of th~ spall.
The force should be perpendicular to the span and toward
the center" oftl1e dl-jve. Measure tl18 force reqlJir'ed to
def leet anyone of the bel ts 1/64" f ( ) I ' every inch cd SP2f'1
length. FOI- eX31nple/ the deflection for a 32-incll s~an
would be 1/2"(i.e. 1/64"x32 = 32/64 = 1/2").

Applied to Table 2 column A using a 5v-l)elt with a slliall

sheave diame'tel' ( I f 12 incl1es, the measured amount ( I f force
should b~ 20 Ibs. wtlen belt is deflected ol1e-half il1C11.
Tighten the belts to the deflection force listed in l~J)lumn
'IA '1 using the proper table for the bel ts b~ing used.

Checking Belt Tension

Pa.--!~.e 14

Step 3:

Belt tension will have a normal drop during the first

24 to 48 hours of operation as the belts seat and take
their initial stretch. Retension belts after this "run-
in" period according to the deflection forces in column
B of the table being used.

After Il run in" and "normal running" adjustments have

been made, check belt tension at least every 60 hours
of operation. Belt tension must be checked frequently
during periods of extreme temperature changes. In cold
weather, belts will shorten while at idle and stretch
during operation and may require attention several
times a day.

CAUTION: Do not use belt dressing on V-belts.

Do not allow oil or grease to accumu-
late on them because of the deterior-
ating effect it has on rubber. Oil or
grease may cause slippage in operation
and will collect dust that will have
an abrasive effect on belts and sheaves.
If necessary to clean oil or grease
from belts, use naptha or similar
complete drying solvent.

During the off season Dr periods of extended storage.

all belts should be slackened to eliminat~ damag~ to
equipment due to constant tension loads at one point.
Before resuming operation, adjust belts to normal
operation.

SCREEN UNIT:

The screen unit is composed of one roller bearing mounted

main shaft which is housed in a suitable housing. The bear-
ings are mounted in fixed bearing housings which also
serve as brackets by which the unit is rigidly attached
to the screen box. Power is transmitted through V-belts to
a sheave keyed to the drive shaft.

SCREEN UNIT BEARING HEAT CAUSES:

GENERAL - The screen unit, by reason of its functional pur-

pose, is subjected to strain. For this reason frequent and
regular inspection should be made to be sure that all
caps crews securing the bearing housing flanges and mounting
connections are kept p~operly tight.

CHECKING BEARINGS - Bearings normally operate at a temper-

ature of 100 degrees fahrenheit(37.77 degrees C) to 150
degrees fahrenheit (65.56 degrees Cl, but in warm climates
may operate at 180 degrees fahrenheit, periodically
running as high as 200 degrees fahrenheit(93.33 degrees C).
Under these conditions and within these limits there is no
cause for alarm. However, if a bearing maintains a temper-·
ature of 212 fahrenheit(100.00 degrees C) or higher, it
is cc,nsidered as overlleatillg and the cause should be found
arid corrected to prevent damage.

(1) A fatlrenhelt thermometer prOVloes the best metJl0d

of checking bearil1g temperatures. Reluove (il"ain CI]-
oil level guage and drain a small amount of lubri-
cal1t into a cOJltailler, and immediately CJ18Clz tempe]"-
ature of lubricant, which also will be bearing
tempe]~ature.

(2) Bearing temperatl1res can be checked by placirlg the

hand on tIle bearing housing; if the hand caD be
held there for a few seconds the bearing is not toe.
warm.

(3) In the everlt tIle housing is too warm to be touched,

pour several drops of water on tile b~aring t10USi11g.
If water does not rapidly boil and pass off as steam.
the bearirlg is not too warm. If the water stearns. ttle
temperature is greater tl1an 212 degrees fahrenl1eit
(100.00 degrees C) and the bearing is overheating.

BEARING HEATING CAUSES:

(1) Most common causes of overheating is too much lubri-
cant and me,st generally occurs when tJle unit is new
or immediately after lubricant has been changed.

(2) II-ICO]~rect type or grade of lubricant can caus~ 0\'e1--

heating and improper lubrication e.f bearings. Alwavs
use re=ommen~ed lubricant.
Page 16

(3) The bearings will overheat if the screen is

operated faster than recommended. Check the
speed with the speed indicator and correct
if necessary.

(4) One of the bearings may overheat if the unit

is operated out of level. An extremely unlevel
position may result in one of the bearings not
receiving its share of lubricant and conse-
quently the bearing will begin to get hot.
Level tl1e screen to correct this condition.

(5) Overheating is also a sign when bearing failure

is developing. Check the overheating bearing
for wear. It will be necessary to partially
disassemble unit to expose bearing presumed
failing.
PagE: 17

SCREEN UNIT BEARING REMOVAL - ONE SIDE ONLY

Whenever the cause of bearing failure is definitely deter-

mined to be on one side of the SCree}1 Ul1it only, it is
possible to disassemble the bearing from the side of the
screen.

A. DISASSEMBLY OF BEARING FROM HOUSING(DRIVE SIDE)

(1) Remove the 3/8" dia. x 2" long machine bolts(100-24)

and pull the sheave(100-2S) off end of shaft.

(2) Loosen and remove cap screws, detaching the tapered

bushing(100-26) off end of shaft. Inspect taper bush-
ing for wear, cracks or any unusual appearances.

(3) Remove key (100-11) .

(4) Remove nut SKF AN17(100-lS) from end of shaft. Inspect

threads.

(5) Remove locks SKF W17(100-14) from end of shaft.

(6) Loosen capscrews(100-13) and remove c0untErw~ight

ilOO-12).

(7) Loosen U-bolts(100-19) and remove cOl,nterweight hub

(100-18) from Elld of shaft.

(8) RE:lllO\/I~ key(lOO-11).

(9) Slide bearing spacer sleeve(100-7) [I-om el1d of s)-laft.

( 10) Loosen machine bolts(100-17) and remove fixed bearing

cap(100-28) .

(11 ) Remove and inspect seal(100-S). Replace seal if torn,

nicked~ or damaged ifl any manner.

(12) Remove bearing(100-4). \~hen hs.ndling b'::::arings~ it is

very important for you to have clean hallds and elsal)
tools. Have plenty of clean rags available arl,j IJse
thenl often. Do 110t use waste paper, as the lint and
short strands ad~!ere too readily to oil surfaces.
Be sure to keep hands and work area wiped clean.

When installing new bearings, clean bearing ~Iousing, bearin~

cap~ shaft and all details entering into the assembly so
that nc, dirt. protective coating, or grease adheres to it.
Page 1e.

Do not wash out the factory applied lubricant whicl1 the

bearing is greased with. The manufacturer used a high
grade non-acid lubricant, free from all chemicals and
impurities that might cause corrosion. Any lubricant
you add must be absolutely clean. To assure this, the
following procedures are recommended.

(1) Always keep the cover on the grease can so that no

no dirt can enter.

(2) Be sure the instrument with which you take the

grease from the can is clean. Avoid using a wooden
paddle. Use a steel blade or putty knife that can
be wiped off smooth and clean.

(3) In cases where"a grease gun is used to introduce

grease into the bearillg chamber, observe the same
cauting regarding the cleanliness of the gun --
especially the nozzle and the grease fittings. t1.ore
than 90 % of all bearing failures are due to dirt
that has found its way into the bearing, either
due to carelessness before or during assembly, or
by the user after the unit has been placed in oper-
ation.
