Cyclone is one of the determinants that affect the shifting of supply curve to left. When a cyclone
struck Queensland, there was decrease in supply. This can be seen as a shift to the left in the
supply curve for bananas. As an effect, price increases and the quantity decreases. The demand
will just stay the same.
b. On Tuesdays, picture theaters discounts tickets.

Movie tickets are cheaper on Tuesday because consumer demand for movie tickets is less on
Tuesday than it is on the weekends. Therefore, the movie theater lowers the price to compel
people to buy a ticket on Tuesday who would not normally do so at regular price. This will shift
the demand curve to left; thus, lowering the price. Discount price will be based on the
equilibrium 2(E2) as shown in the graph. Supply will just be the same.
c. When a war breaks out in the Middle East, the price of petrol rises and the price of a used

crude oil will be lessened. This would cause a left shift of the supply curve resulting to an
increase in price.

Using supply and demand diagrams, show the effect of the following events on the market of
wool jumpers
a. an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease hits sheep farms in New Zealand( decrease supply
and decrease demand)
Food and mouth disease is a highly contagious disease. Any animals/animal part (i.e.
wool) could spread the disease. As an effect, consumers would not choose wool jumpers
(decrease demand) since this would pose threat in their health and producers will not
manufacture the product since it’s contagious.
