Introduction:

Quaid e Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah conducted the 27th annual session of All India Muslim League that
was held in Minto Park (now known as Iqbal Park) during 22 to 24 March 1940. A.K. Fazlul Haq (also
known as Sher e Bangal) presented this resolution. All Muslim Leaders from the subcontinent arrived at
this session.

Background:
After the war of Independence 1857, the Muslims of the subcontinent lost their value. They were
worried about their future. The only solution to their problem was the formation of a new Islamic state
where they can live their lives according to the guidelines of Islam. The British took over the
government, and the Hindus were slaughtering the Muslims. It was obvious that the Hindus will take
over government after the departure of the British. C.R. Das, John Wright, and other leader anticipated
the division of India.

In 1930, during the session of All India League in Allah Abad, Allama Iqbal clearly stated that Northwest
Hindustan should be formed into a separate state for the Muslims. Choudhary Rehmat Ali published a
pamphlet with the name "Now or Never". In his pamphlet he suggested that the name of the new state
should be Pakistan. Syed Hassan Riaz stated that Quaid had made up his mind to form a separate Islamic
state.

The Presidential Address of Quaid e Azam:

Quaid e Azam firstly described the struggles of the Muslims in the subcontinent. Quaid said:

"Muslims, by any definition of the word, are a nation and possess their

separate culture, social and religious system and sound traditions."

He explained that India is not a country, it is a subcontinent. The solution lies in formation of a new
state.

The Rights of Muslims will be at risk in undivided India :

In history, there are many states that got freedom. The Iberian Peninsula was divided into Spain and
Portugal. While Ireland was separated from United Kingdom. Czechoslovakia also came into existence
from partition. Quaid explained how so many countries were separated. He said, in such way, Muslim
can also demand a separate state to live independently.

Basic Points:
The basic points of the Pakistan Resolution are mentioned below:

1. The North-west and east-west of the subcontinent should be formed into a new state for the Muslims
of India.

2. No strategy other than Pakistan will be accepted.

3. After the division of India, the rights of the Muslims will be protected.

Reaction of The Hindus:

When the Pakistan resolution was passed, the Hindi journalist took no extra time to criticize the
demands of the Muslims. The Hindus rejected it and even made fun of it. Gandhi and Nehru, especially
turned down the resolution and ridiculed it in harsh words. The Muslims were calling it as "The Lahore
Resolution" the the Hindus ironically started calling it "The Pakistan Resolution". The Muslims adopted
the new term and now it is known as "The Pakistan Resolution."

Reaction of The British:

The British did not pay much attention to the resolution. They chose to ignore it.

Reaction of Muslim Theologists:

Unfortunately, many Muslim theologists did not support Jinnah's idea of dividing the India. But few of
them, Maulana Shabbir Ahmed Usmani, Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanvi, and a few others supported this
resolution.

Conclusion:
Although it was the first step towards formation of Pakistan, but it has a great impact on Hindus. The
Hindus were now worried that the Muslims have decided to

divide the subcontinent. Just after the time period of 7 years, on August 14, 1947 the Muslims
succeeded in formation of a new state called "Pakistan"
