CULMINATING TASK 2

21st Century Media Literacy

Understanding media form and content and familiarizing oneself with the marketing and creative
strategies used in media are essential to knowledge development in the area as well as to
informed discourses on the role of Media and Information Literacy in modern society. With this
task, you shall be able to create a video by exploring the key concepts of an assigned topic and
applying text principles and design elements. This will further reinforce your views and learnings
on Media and Information Literacy in the 21st Century.
For you to become truly media literate people and to help you broaden your understanding and
appreciation of 21st Century Media Literacy, you will now research on relevant media concepts.

Each group will be given a topic showcasing 21st Century Media Literacy. To facilitate your learning and to
help you understand better the topic you are assigned, you will conduct individual research using credible
sources. The Team Leader and the Research Head/ Scriptwriter will collect and consolidate the data
and information from the group members. The collected data will be consolidated into a unified and
comprehensive 2-page group report to be submitted. The report will also be the basis of the concept and
script for a video production. The final output is a 3- to 5-minute video project based on the script and
should apply Text Principles and Design Concepts. The pre-production worksheet and script are
prerequisites for the video shoot.

TOPICS:

Group 1: Media Messages are constructed.

Group 2: Media messages are value-laden.

Group 3: Form and content are inseparable in constructing/understanding media messages.

Group 4: The meaning(s) of media messages are activated by media users.

Group 5: The information-literate person views information as part of a larger social vision.

Group 6: The information-literate person is a motivated lifelong learner.

Group 7: The information-literate person knows how to find, evaluate, and use information in
various contexts.

MAJOR GROUP ACTIVITY MECHANICS

A. You will work together to create a 5- to 7-minute VIDEO PROJECT presenting the essential points of
your assigned topic and applying your knowledge of Text Principles and Design Concepts.

B. The video project should include appropriate photographs, film clips, music, graphs, and other
audio-visual aids. In addition, it should have a title, a closing credits with names of members and their
respective roles and a list of sources. You may use any desired format such as a news report, a short
film, a documentary, a Vlog, etc.

C. The final project should be submitted by one (1) group member in Google: Assignment.

D. Everyone should contribute. Identify the task and contribution of each member in the pre-production
worksheet. A member may have more than one role.
The following are the different roles of each member:

✔ Team Leader - oversees the tasks at hand, provides direction, and organizes the research
process to be undertaken by the group, consolidates and writes the group report. She will also
be the Director of the Video Project.
✔ Research Head/Scriptwriter – collects group research inputs and fleshes out the plot or story
concept through a detailed script.
✔ Technical Director --identifies the technical requirements and other production needs of the group
(songs and music to be used and names of artists, cameras to be used, lights, extension cords,
etc.)
✔ Production Designer – identifies and conceptualizes the props/costumes that will be needed for
the video shoot.
✔ Location Manager – identifies and conceptualizes the kinds of places in which to set the shoot
and suggests needed enhancements and improvisations.
✔ Editor – manages and arranges the final video. She will put together the video footage/clips and
incorporate the necessary texts, graphics, and copyright-free music to make it more engaging.

E. If there is a need to identify other positions, you may do so. These are just the basic positions needed
for the output.

F. To organize the tasks, each group will have to accomplish a Pre-Production Worksheet

6. Professional editing or any professional assistance is not allowed.

VIDEO PROJECT FLOW (10 points)

Projected Time  Description
5 seconds  Opening/Title Screen then a transition
All group members are seen on screen, all of them are playing
the role of students in the middle of a meeting late at night,
30 seconds
one student is seemingly more quiet and shaken up than
usual.
The group leader summarizes the meeting and then dismisses
20 seconds
all, two remain in the just talk and make conversation.
A brief silence as ominous music begins playing in the
10 seconds
background.
One member of the call shares concerns about the other,
and the other student starts displaying fear about someone
80 seconds
they’ve been seeing. You can start to hear loud noises
coming from behind the girl in her audio.
The concerned students shouts for her to escape and leave
30 seconds
while she can but it is too late, they have already arrived.
A sudden halt comes to the noises heard before and the
5 seconds
other student’s phone begins to ring.
After answering the call, the song “Renegade” is the only
thing that can be heard from the phone. The other student
15 seconds  screams and her screen blacks out but you can still hear
audio of the phone playing the song and something being
dragged out of the room.
A dark voice from their screen says “Share, copy link,” and
15 seconds  leaves the call. The last student remaining in the call starts
hysterically crying and screaming.
