NESSA BARROS GALLERY REVIEW ART 101 – SISTER GOUGH

Vatican Museums - Sistine Chapel

I choose this one because I wanted to know more about the Sistine Chapel and Michelangelo di

Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni.

Michelangelo had many talents, sculpture, architecture, painting, and poet. He was born in 1475

in Italy, where he also died. One of his most famous sculptures is David. One of the reasons why

Michelangelo became popular was for his capacity to portray very realistically lifelike anatomy.

First research I did was how Fresco Paintings are created. It is a very complex process that

makes one appreciate even more, especially since you could not see how the colors were going to turn

out until it dried. That takes even more artistic composition and envisioning required to create such

depth of art. It was an innovative style and it is very big; some figures are bigger than life size.

This was commissioned by Pope Julius II in 1508, to be painted over a blue ceiling with stars.

First, it was asked to be used geometric shapes with the twelve apostles. Michelangelo made a

counteroffer to paint scenes from the Old Testament.

I begins with 3 areas with e paintings each, first “The Creation of Adam and Even”, followed by

“Expulsion from the Garden of Eden”, followed by “Noah and the Great Flood”. Surrounding it are Ignudi

(nude paintings), prophets, and sibyls (ancient seers), all in fictive architecture. It is amazing how withy

the use of shading you get depths, and it all look very dimensional. All are scenes taken from the book of

Genesis. Almost like he was the illustrator for a book with no images.

My least favorite part is the Last Judgment panel, the west wall behind the altar; this was

painted many years after the ceiling was completed. Reason why it is because of all the sadness, and

despair portrayed. It also has different color tones. Even the people who are ascending to heaven have a

darker facial expression that makes me not want to look. This was painted for Pope Paul III in between

the years of 1534 to 1541.

My favorite part is Ezekiel, love the color of his clothes, and his face seems very amicable. Apart

from the figure behind his shoulder, it looks very peaceful. He is extending his hand out which I think

looks inviting. Ezekiel saw the Tree of Life as well as the Tree of Knowledge, and had the vision of the

Virgin.

The outside of the chapel is not decorated, quite simple. On the walls, there are various

paintings by different artist like Botticelli, Perugino, and Pinturicchio. This was a period where artists

returned to Classical Greek and Humanism, putting man in his place with God.

In 1989 a 10 years long restoration was completed, it removed hundreds of years of dirt, smoke,

and varnish. The restoration of the Last Judgment was completed in 1994. The Sistine Chapel was

named after Pope Sixtus IV, who oversaw its restoration in the late 15 th century. The chapel has had

many important events; nowadays it is where cardinals meet to select the next pope.

It definitely makes me more appreciative of art and of this particular artist after reading more

about it. The details, the stories, the history, the difficulties.
