Dacromet®: An inorganic, silvery coating is applied to the vehicle components using an immersion process
involving an aqueous suspension of zinc and aluminium flakes. The coating is allowed to dry and then baked at
290 °C.
KTLZn: The vehicle components are given a painstaking 10-zone pre-treatment (including zinc-phosphating), after
which they are immersed in the cataphoretic dip-coating tank. A direct electric current is applied in order to coat
the components with a water-soluble epoxy resin varnish. This coating is then baked at 185 °C. Result: The best
possible corrosion protection, even without a further topcoat.

Square, reliable, light – the BPW axle beam. It’s the stable foundation for a long vehicle life. And
in combination with our brakes and suspension systems, the square axle produces axle
systems which offer convincing all-round performance with long service lives and maintenance
intervals.
• The square axle beam is optimally adapted to the various forces acting on it,
such as twisting and bending.
• Low inherent weight combined with the highest possible stiffness for heavy payloads
• Joining the quenched and tempered axle stubs to the square axle beam using the flash butt-welding
process ensures a uniquely strong connection as well as the longest possible service life
• BPW axle beams are prepared for ABS retrofitting as standard
• Even tyre wear because the axle beam has a positive camber and a narrow toe-in tolerance
• Easy installation/removal of the wheel hub thanks to stepped bearing seats on the axle stub
• Long-lasting corrosion protection by cataphoretic dip-coating with zinc-phosphating, KTLZn

The most important technical data for the axle are the
axle load, the brake type, the track (SP), the spring
centres (FM) and the air cylinder centres (GM). The
spring centre measurement for example, is the distance
between the two spring pads which are positioned
equidistant from the centreline of the trailer. More information:

tyres causes the angle to be forced back to zero, thereby ensuring
stable straight-ahead driving. Without toe-in, the wheels would at-

Dismantling the patented BPW ECO hub system (European patent 0 407 719 B1) couldn’t be simpler: In only a few
operations, the wheel (complete with the hub, roller bearings and brake drum/disc) is removed using the central
screw connection – just like wheel changes in motor racing. The stepped bearing means there is no need to use
a puller or other special tools. The roller bearings remain in the hub where they are well protected against dirt and
moisture.
Installation is also quick and easy: Box spanners are all that are required for the hub cap and axle nuts. The wheel
can remain fitted to the hub during removal and installation.

Transporting goods needs a solid basis – the axle. An axle has to cope with a wide range of
demands: Coping with all the forces which act on it, offering robustness, low inherent weight
and efficient operation. BPW sets the standards in this regard. As we also do in our axle pro-
duction.
* The specified axle loads (pages 116 ff.) are maximum values on the ground up to 105 km/h (65 mph). In vehicles with a slower permitted
maximum speed, the following axle load increases are possible with BPW: Vmax. 40 km/h (25 mph) + 10%, Vmax. 25 km/h (15 mph) + 25%,
Vmax. 10 km/h (6 mph) + 40%. Please also refer to the load rating data provided by the wheel and tyre manufacturers.

[ Axles | Self-steering axles ]
Aufbau
Function
LL stands for “load-dependent steering stabilisation” and it describes the unique functional principle of the BPW
self-steering axle (European patent 0 246 461 B1). Conventional steering axle designs require steering stabilis-
ers powered from an external source – this is not the case with the BPW self-steering axle. The axle beam and
axle stub are connected to undulating thrust bearings via steering pivots.
When driving straight ahead (zero position), the undulations in the thrust washers keep the wheels on track. The
weight of the vehicle presses the undulating contours of the upper and lower thrust washers together. The
wheels remain stable in the correct straight-ahead position.
When the semi-trailer follows the tractor unit into a curve, the wheel castor action ensures the wheels turn in ac-
cordance with the curve radius (the thrust washers slide over one another). The frictional resistance changes ac-

[ Positively steered axles | Axles ]
Large-capacity and heavy haulage vehicles have particular difficulty taking corners. Due to their
length and the large number of axles, they need a much larger cornering radius than convention-
al semi-trailer units. A steering system which acts individually on all wheels – positive steering –
is used to enable them to steer through bends as if they were a conventional unit. Positive steer-
ing systems are essential in order to enable certain vehicle configurations to comply with statu-
tory requirements.

[ Axles | Swinging axles ]
Structure
Function
A single pendel axle consists of a short axle beam and two hubs with brakes. Unbraked versions are also
available. The axle beam has a housing to accommodate the pivot bearings. The pendel axle can therefore be
mounted on a link that is manufactured individually by the vehicle manufacturer, thereby allowing the axle to
pivot. Depending on the vehicle configuration, the axle is connected to the vehicle frame by a ball bearing
slewing ring or a turret bearing provided by the manufacturer.
36

Clever combinations pay off – above all when it comes to heavy transport. With a pendel axle
that comes from the market leader BPW: Reliable, easy-to-maintain and compact technolo-
gy from series production. As a result, BPW has achieved easy and inexpensive maintenance
even in heavy duty applications.
Tandem pendel axles can cope with all irregularities in systems. A hydraulic axle load balancing feature en-

[ Axles | Special axles ]
Structure
Function
The structure of an axle stub is basically the same as that in a rigid axle. However, the axle beam does not ex-
tend across the trailer. It ends shortly after the brake (according to customer requirements). BPW has devel-
oped a special deflector adapter for axle stubs with disc brakes, since the design of disc brakes means they
take up more space than drum brakes. The deflector adapter makes it possible to attach the brake cylinder out-
side the contour of the tyre. The axle stub suspension which attaches the axle stub to the chassis is designed
individually by the vehicle manufacturer.

Whenever a compact design is required – for example in the case of box trailers, cable trans-
porters or car transporters – special solutions are called for. BPW offers the right chassis and
suspension products for almost every type of special vehicle.

Structure
Function
The force from the brake cylinders is transmitted by the slack adjuster to the brake camshaft , causing it
to rotate. The S-cam forces the brake shoes apart, pressing them against the inside of the brake drum .
When the brake is released, the brake camshaft rotates the S-cam back to its neutral position. The brake
shoes are returned to their initial position by tension springs .

The principle of automatic adjustment
Brake linings and brake drums are parts subject to
wear. As the thickness of the material is reduced, the
brake cylinder stroke increases, meaning that the brake
camshaft has to rotate further. In this case, the auto-
matic function of the ECO-Master automatic slack ad-
juster provides the necessary adjustment. As a result,
the brake cylinder stroke is always kept within the
same, optimum range. The adjustment stroke is de-
signed so that there is always sufficient air gap even at
higher levels of elasticity and given thermal expansion
of the adjacent components (e.g. the brake drum).

[ Brakes | Disc brake ]
Construction
Threaded tubes
5 6 Brake pads 7 Brake disc 8 Brake caliper
with tappets
Function
When the brake pedal is pressed, the push rod of the brake cylinder presses against the lever of the brake
caliper. The roller mounted eccentrically in the brake transfers the force onto the bridge . The clamping force
acts on the internal brake pad via the threaded tubes and tappets . As a result, the brake pad is forced
against the brake disc . The reaction force which now arises on the caliper is transferred to the opposite brake
pad by means of the sliding carrier, so that the opposite pad is also pressed against the brake disc with the
same force. When the brake pressure is reduced, the spring force returns the bridge , the threaded tubes and
lever to their original position.

[ Disc brake | Brakes ]
BPW disc brakes with tangential mounting set new standards in brakes for trailers: Shorter installa-

reduces service costs. This and other important arguments make it easy for you to choose BPW.

Over the past few years, disc brakes and electronically controlled brake systems have acted as
a catalyst to promote a considerable number of developments in commercial vehicle brake

to an increasing number of brake combinations and interfaces. In this case, brake matching

[ Operating Recommendation | Brakes ]
The choice of brake is absolutely dependent on your operating conditions. BPW offers you the
right braking systems for every application and every requirement. However, if a brake is not
used as it should be, it can very soon be overloaded or not used sufficiently. In consultation
with BPW, you will find the optimum combination of performance, weight, wear characteristics
and ease of servicing for you special requirements. We are happy to offer you advice. With
BPW, you’ll always make the right choice.
• The design of the drum brake with its enclosed construction means it is better protected against dirt
ingress than are disc brakes
• Disc brakes for zero offset wheels display optimum heat dissipation compared to 120 offset wheels, since
the brake disc is cooled better by the air stream. The proven design principle of the collar disc also en-
sures reduced heat transfer into the adjacent components. Lighter and more favourable wheels as well as
the lighter weight of the system round off the positive properties of disc brakes for zero offset wheels.
• Brake matching between the tractor unit and the trailer is essential to ensure optimum performance and a
longer brake service life
• In general, disc brakes offer excellent braking performance. If trailers and semitrailers are towed by
tractor vehicles which
- do not have a secondary braking system (retarder, intarder, engine brake, etc.) and/or
- are equipped with a trailer parking brake valve (anti-jackknife brake)
then the brake pad wear can be expected to be disproportionately greater than on a comparable
drum brake!

[ Air suspension | Suspension systems ]
The totally flat carriageway has yet to be built. As a result, wheels must be able to move vertically to
make up for unevenness in the surface. BPW suspension systems are individually designed to cope
with every eventuality, including the types of load they’re going to carry. Only in this way is it possi-
ble to ensure the best possible driving safety at the same time as reducing the stress on the driver,
the cargo and the body. This reduces wear on the tyres and cuts down the stress on the vehicle body
and the cargo – as well as reducing your expenses. The modular construction means that it’s easy to
exchange individual components in the event of a repair. Whether you’re thinking about lifecycle
costs or re-usability – you’ll always be on the right track with BPW air suspension systems.
Air suspension has come to the fore in the transport • Optimum use of the permitted vehicle height

• Longer spring deflections dependent bag pressure

• Low weight • Load-dependent damping (PDC) as an option
• The possibility of using an axle lift
The trailing arm connects the axle to the vehicle frame via the air
suspension hanger brackets and the air bag.
BPW trailing arms (single or twin leaf) are highly flexible spring steel
elements. They are hot-rolled from one piece, after which they are
shot-peened and cataphoretic dip-coated and zinc-phosphated.
Trailing arms absorb much of the flexural forces and reduce the tor-
sional forces input into the axle beam. Various trailing arm versions
permit individual equalisation – for example for axle load, track,
spring centre, centre of gravity height and driving comfort. In every
situation, their stiffness and flexibility are exactly matched to the ve-
hicle and its application. This reduces the stress on the body and en-
sures that the vehicle achieves a long service life. The catch strap of-
steel-rubber-steel bush fers the necessary safety reserves if the worst should come to the
worst.
Long-life steel-rubber-steel bushes (up to 4 times the service life of
single-leaf trailing arm rubber-steel bushes) offer maintenance-free mounting of the trail-
ing arm. The axle is precisely located, and tyre wear and operating
costs are both reduced.

Function
The disadvantage with conventional shock absorbers is that their characteristics can only be optimally adapted
to one loading condition (usually fully laden). PDC detects the actual loading condition via the air suspension and
adapts itself smoothly. This improves driving safety at the same time as reducing the strain on the chassis and the
vehicle, in particular when the trailer is empty or only partly laden.

The ingenious “three-dimensional trailing arm” (3-D) enables vehicle
manufacturers to fit air-sprung tri-axle suspension systems with an
LL self-steering axle onto the same frame as a rigid unit without any
problems – there’s no need to have a specially modified frame. It
goes without saying that the 3-D trailing arm offers the same func-
tions and quality features as BPW trailing arms for rigid axles.

age reduces the service life of the bags. The
patented combination air bag from BPW (Eu-

A combination air bag is divided into two parts: The air bag is bolted onto the vehicle frame with the rolling
piston while the centring cone is connected to the trailing arm. When the trailer is lifted, the axle and the cone
move downwards. The movement is restricted by the shock ab-

[ Suspension systems | Leaf suspension ]
Function
BPW VB units are equipped with parabolic or multi-leaf springs . Depending on the version, parabolic springs
have two or three parabolic rolled spring layers. The efficient use of material enables them to combine low weight
with a low height. Multi-leaf springs (trapezoidal springs) contain a stack of spring leaves with a constant cross-
section and graded lengths to give a trapezoidal shape. They are characterised by their robustness and good dri-
ving properties as well as the ease of replacing individual spring leaves. The ends of the leaf springs are mounted
on sliding bearings using spring slides both in the connecting pieces and in the equalising beams . This al-
lows the spring pack to increase in length without obstruction when the suspension deflects.
Axle control is handled by separate connecting rods which can be adjusted on one side to enable the tracking
to be easily adjusted.
In multi-axle suspension systems, the middle connecting pieces have equalising beams which can rotate.
The spring ends which slide in the equalising beam mountings combine to produce static axle load equalisation
(even distribution of axle load when stationary and moving). The design means that no dynamic axle load equalisation
is provided (uneven axle load distribution when braking). BPW leaf suspension systems are designed to offer
“self-damping” and do not need any additional shock absorbers.
74
[ Leaf suspension | Suspension systems ]
Whether on or off-road, local or long-distance – you can rely 100% on BPW mechanical sus-
pension systems. They are extremely robust and their proven construction shows its worth
even when facing the most exacting challenges. They operate purely mechanically and as a re-
sult, can be easily repaired. Our VB units for trailers and semi-trailers can easily cope with axle
loads of 9 tonnes and above.
• For axle loads from 9 to 12 t (series M/ME) and from 14 to 20 t (series HD/HDE)
• Can be used with one to three axles
• With parabolic springs (up to 12 t) or multi-leaf springs (up to 20 t)

BPW W suspension
Function
Whenever you need additional ruggedness to cope with high axle loads under difficult operating conditions,
choose leaf-spring tandem axle units with an intermediate pivoting trunnion axle for holding the frame con-
necting pieces. The spring packs are extremely sturdy and comprise several spring steel layers. They are
mounted in swinging bearings on the trunnion axle using bronze bushes. The axles are clamped onto the
spring ends and are controlled by the offset main spring layers . An even distribution of tension across the
length of the spring is achieved by using spring layers with different lengths. This produces a trapezoidal shape in
76
[ Leaf suspension | Suspension systems ]
W suspensions designed by BPW for tandem axles are extremely well suited to use under even
the harshest conditions. Whether on or off-road, on construction sites, in the arctic or in the
tropics – these robust and long-lasting multiple leaf spring suspension systems ensure reliable
goods transport.

[ Connecting assemblies ]
High-quality connection assemblies round off the extensive BPW product range. BPW of-
fers a complete range of products for fitment between the tractor unit and the trailer – from
the hitch block to the drawbar. With maximum safety and reliability.
79
[ Connecting assemblies ]
The choice of connection assembly depends on the trailer with fifth wheel steering. BPW offers a complete
tractor/trailer combination used. The two most impor- range for both combinations.
tant combinations involve a tractor unit and centre axle
drawbar trailer, then a tractor unit and a multiple axle
Structure
Underrun guard
Hitch block
Drawbar
Function
Centre axle drawbar trailers have between one and three axles in the middle of the trailer. A rigid drawbar on the
trailer frame connects it to the tractor unit. The trailer can be steered because the axle(s) is/are installed in the
centre. The drawbar installation is described as “rigid” because not only horizontal forces but also vertical forces
are transmitted. As a static load, these amount to between min. 4% and max. 10% of the total trailer weight (or
max. 2000 kg). Centre axle drawbar trailers are connected as low as possible under the tractor unit to improve
their driving characteristics.
80
[ Connecting assemblies ]
Connection assemblies represent the connection between the tractor unit and the trailer.
These components have the job of transmitting all relative forces between the tractor unit
and the trailer safely and over a long period. As a result, they are some of the most impor-
tant safety components in the entire unit.
Structure
Drawbar
Turntables
Function
A turntable drawbar trailer can be steered because it has a separate pivot point. This is achieved by mounting
the rigid front axle of the trailer onto the chassis so it can turn by means of a bogie with a turntable. The BPW
product range includes double ball-race turntables for this purpose offering the highest levels of quality and ser-
vice life.
The drawbar and its associated height adjustment features are attached to the bogie frame. Various versions are
available, and they can also be coupled low down like rigid drawbars.

[ Air cylinder bracket | Technical data ]
In drum braked axles from BPW, the air cylinder brackets are welded onto the axle beam.
They are used for accommodating diaphragm and spring-type cylinders. The offset hole
pattern of the BPW air cylinder bracket permits optimum positioning of the brake cylinder
for any lever length. In addition, the air cylinder brackets have marks for additional hole pat-
terns when using small brake cylinders with narrower stud spacings. Dirt, water and snow
can escape through a gap between the air cylinder bracket and axle beam.

[ BPW air bags | Air suspension units | Technical data ]
BPW air bags are firmly rolled into the top air bag cover and are bonded onto the clamping
plate at the bottom by vulcanisation. The top air bag cover is either bolted directly onto the
frame trussing or else a plate or bracket is welded onto the vehicle frame to attach the bag, de-
pending on the bag version. The air bag cover is bolted onto it using two M12 securing nuts.
The air bag piston at the bottom is bolted onto the trailing arm using two M16 securing bolts.
With bracket
For the air bag with an offset, the bracket welded onto
5 mm plate
Max. offset The maximum lateral offset between the top and bot-

bottom bag attachments must not be installed with any
rotational misalignment.
trailing arm
General
Flexural forces are created in air bags with an offset.
These forces must be absorbed by gusset plates weld-
ed onto the frame trussing.
When the structure and the bag offset are being de-
fined, it is necessary to ensure that the air bag has suf-
ficient clearance.

[ Air suspension valve/ stroke limiting | Air suspension units | Technical data ]
BPW supplies the air installation kit and the corresponding installation diagram for the partic-
ular application. The installation diagrams show the valves in what is referred to as the ISO
view. The letters and numbers of the valves printed inside boxes on the installation diagrams
are identical to the markings on the valves themselves. That makes installation very straight-
forward. BPW's warranty will be invalidated if installation is performed incorrectly by third par-
ties.
The air suspension valve is the heart of the air sus- Stroke limiting
pension installation. It controls the air bag pressure Catch straps
according to the vehicle load and therefore keeps the
ride height constant. It is attached to the vehicle
frame and connected to the axle by means of the ar-
ticulation device – in the centre of the middle axle in
tri-axle suspension systems or of the rear axle in tan-
dem axle suspension systems. In special cases (e.g.
axle lift device), the air suspension valve can also be
connected to the front or rear axle. Centre of axle
Direction of travel
Rapid venting
Air suspension valve In vehicles whose payloads are unloaded rapidly, e.g. tippers, container
vehicles, steel strip vehicles, etc., stroke limiting is required in the form
Frame attachment of catch straps or rapid venting of the air bags.
2. Stroke limiting can also be performed using catch straps. When in-
stalling the catch strap, make sure it does not chafe on the axle beam.

Control
Lifting axles are controlled either electro-pneumati-
cally (electric switch), with manual pneumatic control
(hand-operated valve) or automatically (compact
valve). The overload protection demanded in the leg-
islation is taken into account in the BPW installation
kit.
