The fulfillment of this study was made possible through God’s provision of knowledge,
good health and well-being.

This journey would not have been possible without the support of our beloved family,
professors and mentors, and friends.

To our family, thank you for encouraging us in all of our pursuits and inspiring us to
follow our dreams. We are especially grateful to our parents, who supported us emotionally
and financially. We always knew that you believed in us and wanted the best for us. Thank you
for teaching us that my job in life was to learn, to be happy, and to know and understand
ourselves; only then could we know and understand others.

Prof. Isabelita Isip, the student nurse’s adviser in Community Health Nursing II
Lecture, for her patience and continuous guidance all throughout the study and Prof. Herman
Zoleta, his dynamism, vision, sincerity and motivation have deeply inspired the group;

Distinguished members of the pannel headed by _________________, together with

________________ and ___________________, for their assistance and scholarly insights;

The selected one hundred families residing in Purok 2 of Barangay Butong as the

INTRODUCTION

According to Dimond, the compassion, reverence for all individuality, keeping in mind

the ethnicity and different cultures of the patients must reflect in nurse practices. Nurses that

are exposed to the community learn how to interact and adapt to the different kind of people

living in a community. The community is not simply a context of the existence of the families,

groups and sub-populations or populations nor just a setting for the nursing interventions, it is

seen as a client of the nurse. Community health nursing involves a holistic approach to patient

care. Interventions are aimed at individuals, families and groups within a geographic area.

Nursing care focuses on managing and preventing diseases as well as educating a community

about maintaining well-being. Thereupon, awareness of things and practices pertaining to

health of the families is significant in the community.

Conducting a case study in the community is truly important in student nurse’s life as it

improves their skills, knowledge and attitude and helps them to apply all the concepts and

theories learned in nursing. It serves as an instrument to determine thoroughly the health status

of the community through assessment and critical inspection. As a consequence, student nurses

are able to identify health related problems and aids them on how to intervene the problem

through holistic care and health education. It is way more challenging to conduct the

community assessment due to the pandemic but the student nurses are eager to successfully

finish the community profiling.

COMMUNITTY INTERACTIONS

GROUP VALUED EXPERIENCES IN THE COMMUNITY

Interacting within the community was an astonishing experience that the group had
done. Data gathering has become a major challenge faced due to the event of this pandemic. As
the group ended up choosing Purok 2 of Barangay Butong, struggles of the group members
were encountered including availability and time. Online surveys and Face to Face interview
was implemented to ensure the accuracy of data. While face-to-face interview is being
conducted, safety protocols such as providing face shield for the interviewer, wearing of face
mask, and disinfecting with alcohol was strongly observed. Data collection gave the group a
hard time, considering it was implemented during pandemic, but it was done successfully
while assuring the safety of everyone.

The group has learned a lot from this experience and was also able to share knowledge
with each other as the study is being conducted. The significance of empathy to the dilemma of
each family of the community is one of the valued learned by the group. Everybody has
learned how to gather data efficiently and to do a particular task assigned to them. Each of the

member contributes to form this study based on the observation regarding the rising problems
of Purok 2. Coordinating and Communicating with other members of the community is one of
the key strategies to gather data effectively. The student nurses acquired the skills of earning
the community’s trust by assuring them that preserving the confidentiality of the information
gathered will be employed.

Camaraderie within the community may be the hardest to earn but it was indeed the
most fulfilling part of this study. The student nurses were able to help them recognize the
things they used to neglect and gave advices on how to resolve an existing problem. The group
learned a lot from this community as a team. Some of the members of the group ended up with
a realization in life. The group does not only build trust with the community, they also build
trust with each other. The group believed that trusting themselves made them reach this far
without a hanging question on their heads.

The pie chart shows that majority of the people residing in Purok 2, which is 71%
(Seventy-one percent) of the total population owned the lot where their house is located, while
the remaining 29% (twenty-nine percent) of the total population of Purok 2 does not owned the
lot where their house is located.

Ownership of lot can be thought as bundle of rights. Many rights are associated with
ownership of land, such as right to use, rent, and sell it, cut down trees and build house.
However, limits are placed on that bundle of rights. Paying land taxes is a must when you have
owned lot. Advantage of having owned lot is you are not required for the monthly rent
payment because you owned the lot where your house is built. Tenancy is the right to use, care
for, and benefit from the lot. Tenants own their building, but not the land it’s built on. The
tenant owns any improvements made to the property, including the structure it constructs. Just
like other real estate leases, it requires regular rent payments. Usually it has a very long term
leases. Improvement made to land that is ground-leased becomes the property of the landlord

71% (Seventy-one percent) of the total population owned the house where they lived in, while
the remaining 29% (twenty-nine percent) of the total population of Purok 2 does not owned the
house where they lived in.

Renting offers flexibility, predictable monthly expenses, and someone to handle

repairs. Renting a house means you can move without penalty each time your lease ends.
However, it also means you could have to move suddenly if your landlord decides to.
Homeownership brings intangible benefits. They include a sense of stability, belonging to a
community, and pride of ownership, along with the tangible ones of tax deductions and equity.
However, it is not good for restless or nomadic types. Real estate is the original illiquid asset.
The overall cost of homeownership tends to be higher than the overall cost of renting. Contrary
to the popular belief, renting doesn’t mean you’re throwing away money every month and
owning doesn’t always build wealth in the long run.

Weather in the Philippines can range from intense heat to a raging storm within a
couple of hours. This is why housing materials for Philippines must make the structure durable
and weather resistant. Concrete is an aggregate made up of stones and sand that are mixed with
a binder like cement and water. Concrete materials create a barrier over the steel to prevent
rusting. It is use as actual foundation of the house because of its durability and strength. Wood
is a good material as it is lightweight compared to concrete and easy to find locally. Wooden
houses are perfect in the more provincial areas of the country where it’s much greener. Mixed
materials type of housing is a combination of wood and concrete and is the most common type
of housing materials in Philippines. Makeshift type of housing materials are temporary and
usually of poor quality.
