Performance Notes
Baptism by immersion is a sensual experience of being “drowned” in the waters of salvation and rising from those
waters dripping and gasping in our new life in Christ. The prayers for the blessing of water in the R.C.I.A. are what
inspired the text for this piece. It is intended to be a joyous, exuberant hymn of praise and thanksgiving for the life
poured out on us in the waters of baptism.
This song is appropriate anytime we are celebrating our baptism. It could be used during the Rite of Initiation at the
Easter Vigil as well as the Sprinkling Rite during the Easter Season.
Written in a bold, gospel style, this piece should be performed with strength a nd conviction —this is not a time for
caution or timidity.
The Verses begin a bit quieter than the Refrain. Each phrase of the Verse gets stronger and more energetic until it leads
back into the fullness of the Refrain.
Whether accompanied by piano or guitar, the accompaniment should be sturdy and robust, supporting the full
participation of the assembly. The piano accompaniment includes many triplet figures characteristic of this style, and
in the latter verses is more embellished. Don't be intimidated by the scoring. The music is notated merely as a guide
because improvisation is encouraged!
