Running head: MIDLOTHIAN CLINIC JOURNAL 1

Hayden Sloan

Summary and reflection

Getting the opportunity to go to this health clinic was a really cool and good thing to do.

The midlothian health clinic is a clinic in Youngstown that the working poor who do not have

good health care or any health care at all can come and get a free check up on their health. They

hold a couple of clinics a month for these people. Nurses, doctors, social workers all

volunteering to make this type of thing possible for these people. It is just like a regular doctor's

office visit. They come and sign in for their appointment and then are moved to the area where

the nurses take their blood pressures and vital signs. While waiting for that they can grab some

food that the YSU dietician students were making. They made some chili and had water and

nutritional bars for everyone coming in for the clinic. What they had us nursing students do was

at the beginning where they would come in to sign in for their appointment, they would have us

go with them and follow them around to the different stages and answer any questions for them,

talk with them, and just really get to see how a clinic like this works. I was with some of Dr.

weavers community clinical students and each of us had a different patient to follow and see.

The doctors they saw once they got to that portion of the visit were really nice because they were

taking time to volunteer and do this. One of the doctors was retired and the other two were still in

practice. The doctors did an assessment and check up on the patients it reminded me very much

of when I go to the doctor so it was nice seeing that people who can not afford health care

receiving care like this. The clientele that showed up there was multi ethnic ranging from african

american, middle eastern, hispanic and caucasion. The overall experience was really good and it

is good to see that there are stuff like this in our community to help those in need out.

Objectives
MIDLOTHIAN CLINIC 2

The objective looked at this week at the Midlothian health clinic was describing the

community as a setting for all levels of health care delivery. Having this clinic right in the

community where it is really easy to access for clients in need is a really big thing. Most of the

people there were within walking distance and even walked to the clinic that day. What this

clinic provided these clients was a free doctors office visit to have a check up on their health and

how well they are doing with their health. They also provide referrals for clients where they can

further get checked up on if it was something like X-ray, blood draws, certain scans, that this

clinic couldn't provide at that specific time. These clients before seeing the doctor where able to

be assessed by the nurses just as it would be in a regular doctor's office visit by taking vitals,

seeing their weight and how they are doing overall. These are all things that these people do not

normally get to receive on a regular basis. Since the health care system in the U.S. does not

really help those who cannot afford it as much as it should, something like this is a breath of

fresh air for these people. This clinic delivered multiple levels of health care for these clients.

These clients are also able to learn different things about health that they may have not known

before without going to a health care place like this.
