FIRST VOYAGE OF MAGELLAN AROUND THE WORLD

Analysis: Pigaffeta's Chronicle

1. What is the main idea?

The main idea of Pigaffeta’s Chronicle is that The Magellan Route is the trail of
the First Voyage Around the World. The historical expeditions of Ferdinand Magellan
and the rediscovery of the Philippines. Magellan proves that the Earth was round and so
he proves it with his exploration and he did prove that the Earth is round. The Flat Theory
has been debunked after. Magellan Route represents the confirmation of the Earth’s
roundness, is at the origins of the concept of globalism and the universality of knowledge.
The discovery of the Strait of Magellan and the crossing of the Pacific Ocean, new
models of expansion and economic were well known, involving countries from all
continents and is called globalization. It was finally proven that the New World was its
own continent rather than an extension of Asia, that there was an ocean between the two
and that resources of the Indies could be acquired through new means. Also after the
voyage of Magellan, the Flat Earth Theory has been debunked. Pigafetta’s work instantly
became prominent literary men in the west like William Shakespeare referred to the book
in their interpretation of the New World.

2. What is going on when the source is created?

A young Italian nobleman, Antonio Pigafetta, who had joined the expedition and
served as an assistant to Ferdinand Magellan route to the Moluccas Islands. Antonio
Pigafetta studied astronomy, geography, and cartography. In 16th century, Antonio
Pigafetta wrote the book on board one of the 5 ships that was first to travel the world
during the expedition that was led by the Portuguese explorer, Ferdinand Magellan, to
prove that the world is round. Sailing southward along the coast of South America,
Magellan discovered the strait that today bears his name became the first European to
enter the Pacific Ocean from the east. Magellan died while exploring the Philippines, but
his ships continued west to complete the circumnavigation of the globe. When Magellan
died, the rest of the fleet was gone. The Santiago shipwrecked, the San Antonio
overtaken, the Concepcion burned and the Trinidad abandoned. Out of the 237 sailors
who departed from Seville, eighteen returned on the Victoria. At the end of the
voyage, Pigafetta was on board the Victoria, this was the only ship that was able to return
to Spain. Pigafetta had managed to survive, along with his journal notes that detailed the
discovery of the western route to the Moluccas. Pigafetta’s journal became the basis for
his 1525 travelogue. The expedition started in 1519 and ended in Spain in 1522.
