• This guide is designed to aid Airline Maintenance Personnel

with the identification of typical visual findings during a CF6
Compressor Rear Frame (CRF) Oil Leak Inspection.
• Engine model specific limitations and detailed acceptance or
non-acceptance criteria are found in the Aircraft Maintenance
Manuals (AMM).
• This guide is intended to be a tool to assist inspection and
evaluation of a CRF oil leak. It in no way is a replacement or
alternative to the AMM.

• Gain access to the CRF sump area per the

AMM instructions. Ref Figure 1.
• Inspect: Oil Supply tube, Support Bracket
(area A), Forward Sump Tee-Fitting (area
B), Oil Manifold, Oil Impingement Tube,
Loop Clamps (area C), Support Brackets
(areas D and E), Forward Sump Elbow
(machined fitting) (area F), Aft Sump Fitting
& Aft Sump Elbow / Stub Tube (area G),

Generically Inspect for:

• Note any oil leakage or coking

o Oil wetting on the tubes
o Oil leakage from the oil supply tube, oil impingement tube, and oil manifold
o Oil leakage from the connection joints of the oil supply tube, oil impingement tube, and oil manifold

• Inspect for distortion of features

• Note any features coming loose

Specifically Inspect for:

• Aft Sump Elbow and Stub Tube (area G) cracking and/or signs of oil leakage/coking on aft sump wall- See Appendix 1
o Note: If configuration of CRF oil manifold is prior to 72-1516 Rev 03, 72-1517 Rev 01, or 72-0523 Rev 03 (Pre-SB 72-1559, Pre-SB 72-1560
or Pre-SB 72-0553), expect to see interference with the 5R bearing housing. See Figure 10. This interference by itself is not a cause for
concern and is eliminated through application of CF6-80C2 72-1559, 72-1560, or CF6-80E1 72-0553 5R bearing housing scallop.

• Oil Impingement Tube at vent duct cracking and/or signs of oil leakage/coking on frame wall- See Appendix 2

• Forward Sump Elbow (area F) cracking and/or signs of oil leakage/coking on frame wall

Additional Notes:

• CRF oil system leakage elsewhere will collect at the internal 6:00 scavenge and then present itself externally at 6:00 strut and/or the LP
recoup tubes in the exhaust nozzle- See Appendix 3

• Oil wetting or coking attributed to sump seal leakage is acceptable if oil consumption is within AMM limits- See Appendix 4

If configuration of CRF oil manifold is prior to 72-1516 Rev 03, 72-1517 Rev 01, or 72-0523 Rev 03 (Pre-SB 72-1559, Pre-SB 72-1560 or Pre-SB 72-0553), expect
