RELIGIONS
1. Introduction
a) Term and meaning
Religion, is not merely a knowledge, an idea nor a science. Religion, is an
experience of the total life (existence in totally).
It is a kind of internalization of the realities and that comes up then in the form of
actualization. “Beyond religion” is a philosophical term using to denote the
religiosity or commonly as known as Spirituality.
The real need of human being. Actually, should always be an effort to fulfill “the
emptiness”, “deficiency” or “shortage”. That’s how we need sharing, we need
alive, breathing, we need happiness, we need the Principle of BEINGS.
A life existence comes such as two surfaces of the coin. The inner most root is we
are (all the living) to participate in an unshared sharer. In this way each religion
realizes itself rightly.
Primary intention in teaching religiosity is to spark students interest and
excitement in the subject matter.
You will find your horizon broadened and assumptions challenged and will
hopefully gain a deeper, broader and more balanced appreciation for.
You are encouraged to question and challenge what is presented to you and to
think for yourself about the issues under consideration.
2. Religiosity- Spirituality (Beyond religion)
Religion: may in fact be systems of symbols that establish people spiritually both
individually and collectively spiritually, and at the same time make them seem
realistic.
People is said to have tend to fit into and make use of the systems of symbols and
have the point of view about supernatural forces as motivation and
communication
Primitive Religion came up such as the systems of symbols traditionally. People,
traditionally, found that life is meaningful bound by religious systems. They start
to see the two side of problem and then have the tendency to stand for the point
they got internalized as insight.
Both traditional and modern people express the ‘faith’. Many say the etymology
of religion lies with the Latin word “religare”, which means “to tie, to bind.”.
People have tendencies to have a tie between the different parts. Someone has
tried to identify the way of life for himself/herself personally or in the societal
life.
b) Religious or spiritual being
It means that people try to get in harmony between physical, mental, emotional
needs and spiritual ones. It’s impossible for us to neglect any side of life even
physical or spiritual.
Religious personality then puts a person as a spiritual being rather than a human
being. Our body, mind and feelings are all products of our inner world.
Homo spiritual" (spiritual being) becomes a new paradigm in human existential
descriptions. The paradigm shows that humans are not only physical bodies.
Humans have a full awareness that is located and timed. This spiritual ability
also encourages people to make the best for others.
c) Religion as a cultural system
Every living and healthy religion has a marked idiosyncrasy.
The vistas it opens and the mysteries it propounds are another world to live in.
In religious belief and practice a group's ethos is rendered intellectually
reasonable by being shown to represent a way of life ideally, while the world
view is rendered emotionally convincing by being presented as an image of an
actual state of affairs peculiarly well-arranged to accommodate such a way of
life.
It objectivizes moral and aesthetic preferences and it supports received beliefs
Religious symbols formulate a basic congruence
The notion that religion tunes human actions to an envisaged cosmic order and
projects images of cosmic order onto the plane of human experience is hardly
novel. However, we don’t know if it will happen or not
Let us, therefore, reduce our paradigm to a definition and we can define a
religion as: a system of symbols which acts to establish powerful, pervasive, and
long-lasting moods and motivations in men by formulating conceptions of a
general order of existence and clothing these conceptions with such an aura of
factuality that the moods and motivations seem uniquely realistic.
d) Religion as a unitary system
Cultural concentration has identified religion as a human experimental
phenomenon.
The anthropological study of religion mentions a set of beliefs which later
emerge in a system of symbols that are accepted by a community
There are five religious significances as a system, as follows:
1/. Which serves to explain a or a sign of something symbolized or
convey a shared view.
2/. A system for building strength, an influential and long-lasting state of
the heart and forming human motivation. So endurance and motivation
for life, courage, perseverance and independence, all are examples of the
virtues of life that must be reflected in all religious systems.
3/. The existing system is able to formulate concepts about a general
order and existence. Religious systems become homes or places where
common values actually get opportunities and opportunities to grow and
develop without the existence of an exclusivist and primordial subterfuge.
4/. The religious system that develops in good examples and behavior is
as stated in each formulation and shared values. How is the relationship
between the facts taught and the practice of life that is pleasing to all
parties.
5/. The religious system is different and has unique and realistic
characteristics. Religious indicators and variables are special and unique
so they cannot be compared with others. There is certainty in its value
and it is not something floating and unreachable or unthinkable. This
once again does not involve substantial religion, on the contrary the
functionality in building personal and shared life.
e) Religion as a communication of commitment
Commitment becomes the attitude and tendency of the human
heart to seek realization. Commitment at the same time points to
continuous effort. Commitment, is not yet an end result but a self-
dynamic towards something.
The religious community performed phenomenally through the
following things:
Treatments such as the practice of worship and rituals,
making offerings directed at the Divine Principle and at the
same time being a religious citizen celebration.
Attitude in the form of respect and fear of "the above" and
sacred assumption
Statements in the form of provisions and laws of teachings
as well as formulations of sentences that are considered
sacred and full of power because they are accepted as
Divine Words which are revealed to humans through the
prophetic of the Founder.
Religious leaders who have certain authority to their
citizens.
The Holy Place is a sign of the presence of the Divine and
is also a gathering place for religious communities to
perform rituals and worship.
f) Religion and Science
The development of the world and contemporary human society in
the field of religion and science presents its own problems.
Religion and science need each other. Religion without science is
blind (Edith Stein) as science deals with reason. Science without
religion is nothing as science deals with meaning
The typology of the relationship between science and religion
produces cash colors.
Because of the relationship between religion and science, they
have divided it into 4 types of model. They are
Religion and Science conflict: The role and impacts of
religions is going to be attacked and drowned out by the
development of Science
Religion and Science dialogue: There should be a dialogue
between religion and science in this model. They all try to
make an effort to have a green line. All of them have one
same target to motivate and convince people to do
something in a better way
Harmony- Integration between knowledge and religion:
there is an integrated and comprehensive approach between
religious institutions and science or science. They use the
system of “IQ” and “EQ” to analyze and connect the
mindset of religion with science
Religion and Science are interdisciplinary and independent:
religion and science have their own autonomy. Religion
and science each become separate 'science' disciplines.
Religion was built from belief and faith. Otherwise, science
was built from the principles of rationality. However, they
always tend to implement each other with its own
principles. “religion without science is blind, and
science without religion is lame"
