Finding the Measurement

of the Missing Angle

Angle Facts

Define: Perpendicular Lines

Two lines at right angles (90o) to each other

Define: Parallel
Straight lines that are always the same
distance apart and never meet

Angles at a Point

Angles at a point add to 360o

Angle a + b + c + d = 3600

Example: Find angle a.

75
Angle a = 360 - (85 + 75 + 80) + 80
240
= 360 - 240 = 120o
Angles at a Point

d
c a
b

Opposite Angles are equal

Angle a + b = 1800 because they form a
straight line
Angle c + d = 1800 because they form a
straight line
Angle c + b = 1800 because they form a
straight line
Angle d + a = 1800 because they form a
straight line
So a = c and b = d
Angles on a Line

Angles on a straight line add to 180o

Oblique line

180o
Angles a + b = 180o
b a
Horizontal line

b 70o x
35o

Angle b = 180 – 70 = 110o Angle x = 180 – 35 = 145o

PARALLEL LINES

TRANSVERSALS
ANGLES FORMED BY
TRANSVERSALS

You will learn to

* identify angles formed by
transversals

VERTICAL ANGLES

are the angles opposite

each other when two lines
cross. They are always

the angles that occupy the same

relative position at each intersection

ALTERNATE INTERIOR ANGLES

These are two nonadjacent

interior angles on opposite
sides of the transversal.
ALTERNATE INTERIOR ANGLES

ALTERNATE EXTERIOR ANGLES

The pairs of angles outside the

parallel lines on opposite sides of
a transversal line are alternate
exterior angles .

SAME-SIDE INTERIOR ANGLES

Same side interior angles are two angles

that are on the same side of the transversal
and on the interior of (between) the two
lines.

Theorem: If two parallel lines are cut by a

transversal, then the same side interior
angles are supplementary.

SAME-SIDE EXTERIOR ANGLES

When parallel lines are cut by a transversal

line, same-side exterior angles are formed,
which are outside of the parallel lines and on
the same side of the transversal line.

The theorem states that when parallel lines

are cut by a transversal line, the same-side
exterior angles are supplementary.
