Experiment No. 09: Objective

1) The experiment aims to demonstrate the operation of a small cooling tower under minimum air velocity with a constant water flow rate and no packing. 2) The apparatus is set up and cleaned, then water is filled and heated to 45°C while temperatures are recorded at various points over time. 3) Range, approach and efficiency are calculated using the temperature readings and formulas provided for various time intervals to analyze the cooling tower performance.

Experiment No.

09
Objective: Demonstrate a practical operation of small Cooling Tower under minimum air
velocity at constant flow rate of water without packing.
Apparatus: Cooling Tower unit
Procedure
1. Set up the apparatus and check all the connections are in well conditions.
2. Clean the apparatus before going to start up.

3. Fill in the reservoir tank with clean water until ¾ full.

4. Turn ON the power supply.
5. Switch ON the power supply in main control panel.
6. Make sure that all valves are open before start the experiment.
7. Switch ON the water heater and set the temperature upto 45oC. once the temperature
reached now turn ON the water pump
8. Record the values for all temperature point for every 5 mint interval of time
9. Repeat the steps with other parameter (maximum& minimum flow rate and high or low air
velocity etc)
10. After finish the experiment switch OFF the heater and main supply from control panel.

11. Repeat the process for each set of settings.

Formula:

Range = Tempetarure of Hot water inlet - Temperature of Cold water outlet

Range = T1  T2
Approach = Temperature of cold water outlet - Wet bulb temperature of air (bottom)
Approach = T2  T4
Range
Efficiency =  100
Range + Approach
