 Essay:
Gender equality has always remained one of the most controversial topics of all time. In
Pakistan, the idea of gender equality never gained much attention. This topic has been a source
of the fight between liberals and conservatives due to which all these claims of gender equality
were nothing more than slogans. Gender equality can be said as a myth in our society because
women are paid less than men, there are no proper laws regarding their issues and they aren’t
offered equal opportunities.
In our society, we see only men as the most important person of all in terms of skills, expertise
which results in giving them a high salary. But, when we talk about women they never receive
high or equal salaries as men even if they are similar to men’s level or more qualified and
experienced than them. People try to create a pay gap intentionally by discrimination in hiring
and promoting which leads women behind. Many are those women who are the only source of
bread and butter to their family and there is no male to support them, so this makes their life
very hard as they never get treated equally in society. Thus, the only way to bring light to this
matter is when men and women both raise their voices and state these acts as unacceptable.
Although inequality in women’s pay is the most important issue that is being missed when we
talk about gender equality, it isn’t the only issue. Laws and amendments for women's rights and
protections have also a greater part in gender equality. In a country like Pakistan, women don’t
feel safe outside their houses unless any of their male friends or family member accompany
them. Women also feel like going out with their friends on a trip or doing an odd job to support
their family, but due to the rise in cases of kidnapping, murder, rape their life has been affected
a lot. These incidents make parents worry more, which intends them to stop their child to go
out. This is the responsibility of the government to make laws so that women should feel safe
and protected outside their homes and can go anywhere freely, just like men.
In addition to equal pay and the creation of laws for the safety and protection of women,
women should also have equal access to opportunities. In Pakistan, women make up over 50%
of the population, but they are not offered equal opportunities in society. The reason for this
could be that men are afraid that if women are given opportunities, there is a possibility that
their power and position can be at risk. Due to which a quota system has been allocated for
women in different workplaces. Hence, all of these quota systems should be removed and an
equal and fair chance should be given to both males and females in terms of applying and
selecting for different jobs.
In the end, to end this myth and make gender equality a reality, women should be paid equal to
men, proper laws and amendments should be made to make a secure society for them and
they should have equal access to opportunities.
