QUESTION 1.1

Discrete data is data whose value is obtained by counting such as the number of students in a class
or the number of marbles

The continuous data is data that will have been obtained by measuring such as the height of
students in the class.

1.2.2 The average amount of money spent is 30975/75= 413

1.2.3. The modal amount of money is 300-under 350

1.2.4 The interquartile range = (n+1)/4 =76/4 = 19= 275

(3(n+1))/4 = 56.5 = 450

IQR = 450-275 = 175

1.2.5 The standard deviation is

Standard deviation = √(494200/75)

= 81.13

1.2.6 The coefficient of variation = standard deviation / mean

= 81.13/413

= 0.196

QUESTION 2.1

Probability sampling methods is a method in which the selected data will be from a random set of
data. This means that the data will be selected without prior knowledge to separation of the data.
This can be done through simple random sampling or systematic sampling.

Non-probability sampling methods is a method that has the sample is selected based on the
subjective judgement of the researcher. This works on the merit that the researcher would have
made the selection prior to the research such as purposive sampling etc.
QUESTION 2.2.1

The least square regression equation = y = mx +b

Y = y component

X = x component

M = gradient

B = y intercept

∑x = 8839 ∑y = 5857 ∑xy = 7411726 ∑x2 = 11474555

N=9

m = (N ∑(xy)- ∑x∑y))/ (N ∑x2- (∑x)2)

= (9* 7411726-8839*5857)/ 9*11474555-8839 2

= 0.594

b = (∑y-m∑x)/ N

= (5857-0.594*8839)/9

= 67.38

Therefore the regression equation is y = 0.594x + 67.38

QUESTION 2.2.2

The slope is closely correlated to trend-line which shows that there is a correlation between the
distance covered with the fuel that will be consumed. The fuel consumption level at 67.83 shows
that there is a certain amount of fuel that is being used but not during the driving hence the drivers
maybe selling the fuel as it is not correlating to the point when the distance is zero. Hence in other
words the truck when not in motion must have 60litres reserve.

QUESTION 2.2.3

Result Details & Calculation

X Values
∑ = 5857
Mean = 650.778
∑(X - Mx)2 = SSx = 1009413.556

Y Values
∑ = 8839
Mean = 982.111
∑(Y - My)2 = SSy = 2793674.889

X and Y Combined
N = 9
∑(X - Mx)(Y - My) = 1659501.222

R Calculation
r = ∑((X - My)(Y - Mx)) / √((SSx)(SSy))

r = 1659501.222 / √((1009413.556)(2793674.889)) = 0.9882

Person’s correlation coefficient for the above data is 0.9882.

This is a strong positive correlation, which means that high X variable scores go with high Y variable
scores (and vice versa).

QUESTION 2.2.4

Coefficient of determination

R2 = SSx/SSy

= 1009413.556/2793674.889

= 0.361

This shows only 36.1% of the fuel consumed can be safely predicted from the distance covered by
the trucks.

QUESTION 3.1

Limitations to the use of index numbers

 They just give a rough indication of the relative changes

 They don’t consider the errors that will be available

 Reliability of the comparisons of changes is only for short periods

 The sampling do not give the exact representation needed

 There functionality is not transferrable for different purposes

 They use specialized types of averages which are bound by the limitations

QUESTION 3.2

u = 100 , s = 16 N =50 x= 105 level of significance = 105

HO : U = 105

H1 : u < 105

Reject Ho if Z test at 5% significance level is less

Z = (x-u)/(s/√n)

= ( 105-100)/ (16/√50)

= 2.21

5% significance at 2.2 = 0.4878

This therefore is less than 5% hence we reject H o and concluded that the group is unusual

QUESTION 3.3

N = 100

Eastern Cape computer mean = 26/2 = 13

Western Cape computer mean = 39/2 = 19.5

North Cape computer mean = 35/2 = 17.5

QUESTION 4.1

Characteristics of a normal distribution

 The mean, mode and median are all equal

 The curve is symmetrical at the centre

 There equal distribution of the values on the left and on the right

 The total area under the curve are equal to 1

 It is asymptotic

QUESTION 4.2

Normal distribution formula

y= 1/s(√2π)* e^ - (x-u)2/2s2

= 1/ 4(√2π)* e^ -(65-60)2/2(4)2

= 0.5085

Therefore, the probability that it will last problem free for 65 months after purchase is 0.51 * 100 =
51%

QUESTION 4.2.2

y= 1/s(√2π)* e^ - (x-u)2/2s2

= 1/ 4(√2π)* e^ -(50-60)2/2(4)2

= 0.0488

Therefore, the probability that the plasma will be problem free in less than 50 months is 0.0488 *
100 = 4.88%

QUESTION 4.2.3

y= 1/s(√2π)* e^ - (x-u)2/2s2

= 1/ 4(√2π)* e^ -(48-60)2/2(4)2

= 0.01234
With regards to a 48 month guarantee (1- 0.01234) * 100 will be problem free which = 98.8%

Question 4.3

P2015Q2015/P2015Q2015 =

{(17* 7.5+7.3*4.2+5.5*12.6+15.8*8.5/ 17* 7.5+7.3*4.2+5.5*12.6+15.8*8.5)}*100

= 100

P2016Q2015/ P2015Q2015=

{(23.7*7.5+12.5*4.2+8.7*12.6+22.9*8.5)/(17*7.5+7.3*4.2+5.5*12.6+15.8*8.5)} *100

= 147.755

The Laspeyres prices index shows there has been increase in the prices of stationery from 2015 to
2016 by 4.78 %. This can be due to the economic changes that would have happened during that
time frame.
