Salutations to You, Shri Mataji, who is verily Shri Mahakali incarnated in person,

44
Notes:
The 1000 names of Shrī Mahākālī has been used in Sahaja Yoga for Havans, including
at Ganapatipule Jan.2006. Other sets of 1000 names which Shri Mataji used for Havans
include Shrī Lalitā, Shrī Vishnu, Shrī Adi Guru Dattatreya and Shrī Shiva.

The Kālīkā Sahasranāma is a poem of around 162 verses. There are versions which
differ slightly after name 800. Some editions include long names reminiscent of the
Lalita Sahasranama which are of doubtful authenticity; some texts have a series of
names beginning with rakta, almost exact replicas of the names beginning with
shukra. All the sets have more than 1000 names depending on how one decides to
split them up.

The 1000 names of Shrī Mahākālī is a Tantric text and is open to interpretations by
both branches of Tantrism – Samaya-‘traditional’ which is wholesome and Kaula-‘Left
Path’ where the Kundalini is addressed through sex, alcohol and meat which we would
eschew in Sahaja Yoga. These names have been translated using the pure
interpretations.

Traditionally Shrī Mahākālī was worshipped with a lot of blood – especially in Kolkata
and Bengal with animal sacrifices . Many of the names emphasise Her liking for blood.

Explanation of some names

Towards the end of the 1000 names, there are strings of names starting with certain
words –Bhaga and Liṅga, Rakta and Shukra, Swayambhū and Sādhaka. It may be
helpful to have some idea of their meaning:-

Bhaga and Linga

Bhaga – ‘good fortune, prosperity, beauty, moon, love, (also female generative organs,
passion, pleasure)’
Bhagavat – ‘happy, fortunate, divine, venerable, prosperous, glorious, adorable’ is a
name of Shrī Vishnu/Krishna
Bhagavatī – name of Shrī Durgā .(same meaning as above)

Liṅga – ‘token, sign, characteristic, badge, proof’ (also male generative organ)

45
Bhaga is an inherent quality and Linga is the manifestation or outer sign of that
quality.
So in one sense Bhaga refers to the inherent Spirit (Śhiva) and Linga to the manifested
Universe (Śhakti).

Rakta and Shukra

Rakta-‘red, blood, fire’ is associated with desire, the quality of the Left Side, but also
with passion the quality of the Right Side. Black is more commonly taken as the Left
Side. As ‘fire’ Rakta may be taken as inferring the Kundalini, the Pure Desire.

Shukra-‘white, semen’ is the colour of the central channel and is also associated with
Shrī Shiva, the Ātmā-‘Self, Spirit’

Swayambhū-kusuma/ Swayambhū-puṣhpa –‘Blossom of the Self-existent’.

The ‘Self-existent’ is the Formless Brahman, the Sadāśhiva who has no previous origin
(that we know of). It’s ‘blossom’, the unfolding flower, is the manifested Universe,
Creation as we know it.
‘Self-created flowers’ can also refer to the Chakras, or even realised souls who are
reborn of the Self- ātmā. The translations attempt to bring out these variations in
meaning.

Sādhaka / Sādhu- ‘One who achieves fulfilment, realised soul, worshipper, seeker of truth,
good/ kind/ noble person’

Ka
170 of the names begin with the letter K.
Ka represents the germ of Desire (Kāma) within the Formless Brahman which gives rise to
Creation (Kara). Desire drives evolution, initially instinctively and with the development of
higher consciousness, consciously manifesting the Pure Desire (Kuṇḍalinī) to reintegrate with
the Divine. Shri Mahākālī is the Power of all these desires. Name 19 describes Her as
Kakāra varṇa sarv‛āṅgī – ‘Whose whole body is the sound Ka’.
