    1) Dr. Joyce Poole is leading a study of elephants in Gorongosa National Park, Mozambique. She is studying the proportion of tuskless elephants in the population. 2) A civil war negatively impacted elephant populations and increased poaching for ivory. This created a selective pressure for tusklessness as elephants without tusks were less targeted by poachers. 3) As a result of this selective pressure during the war, the population shifted to include more tuskless elephants over time. However, there are now fewer tuskless young elephants, as the selective pressure decreased after the war ended.
