3. Listen to a dialogue between a scientist and a reporter about the term tsunami. Identify
the correct answers to complete the following statements.

Reporter: Good morning, Professor.

Professor: Good morning.
Reporter: Today we'll be talking about tsunamis. Within the last two decades, the world has
witnessed several devastating tsunamis. Is it true that the word tsunami is a Japanese word?
Professor: You're right. It is a Japanese word meaning "harbor wave". You know, in the past,
tsunamis have also been referred to as "tidal waves" or "seismic sea waves". Actually, the term
"tidal wave" is misleading.
Reporter: Misleading? How so?
Professor: Actually, tsunamis are unrelated to the tides, although their impact upon coastlines
depends on the tidal level at the time the tsunami strikes.
Reporter: I see. Is it true that tides result from the gravitational influences of the Moon, Sun, and
planets?
Professor: Exactly. Even the term "seismic sea waves" is also misleading. "Seismic" implies an
earthquake-related generation mechanism, but a tsunami can also be caused by a non-seismic
event, such as a landslide or meteorite impact.
Reporter: Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge with us, Professor. We will meet
again tomorrow in the same program, Finding the Truth.
