The medical innovation and advanced-computer technology enable more and more specialized

disciplines within the healthcare system, which aims at quality, customized, and tailored care to
patients. In other hand, the phenomenon requires the cooperation between different disciplinary
teams. Evidence-based practice (EBP) is the demand and trend for providing quality, safe, and cost-
reduced care to patients (Stevns, 2013). Evidence is produced from all various researches, which are
conducted by scientists from all interdisciplinary groups. It implies that cooperation and collaboration is
necessary and pivotal for the production of valid, reliable, applicable evidence.

Collaboration in research has been regarded as an opportunity through which different professionals
from various areas join efforts towards solving a particular problem through research. It brings a number
of specific expertise together. It plays a great role in enabling EBP as opposed to traditional approaches
that focuses on standards. A number of organizations give funds to submitted proposals for the sake of
collaborative researches like National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC) to lead to substantial improvements in the quality of care and patient optimal
outcomes.

In interdisciplinary collaboration research, the role played by the advanced practice nurses (APNs)
in the interdisciplinary team is administrative and coordinative. APNs also take the leadership role since
they have gone through trainings that have equipped them for the role. It is well regarded that APNs
and registered nurses (RNs) have firsthand information on clinical matters gained from direct patient
care or administrative aspects of health care, which are very vital and pivotal in any health care research
work (Tingen, Burnett, Murchison & Zhu, 2009). According to Women’s Health Initiative (2010), APNs
and RNs have played a critical supportive and auxiliary role for the interdisciplinary collaborative
research team. The scientific findings from researches by the nursing team equipped with research skills
and knowledge would be beneficial and assistive the EBP. The collaborative interdisciplinary research
work is, therefore, very important for the EBP by APNs and RNs.

For example, CDC (2019) has just updated the recommendations based on researches for use of
once-weekly isoniazid-rifapentine therapy for 12 weeks for treatment of latent tuberculosis (TB)
infection. Student Health Center on the campus of Purdue University (PUSH) just launched Direct
Observation Therapy (DOT) for all the students who tested with latent TB. The DOT regimen demands
the cooperation and collaboration from RNs, healthcare providers, public health professionals, and
pharmacists. RNs need to call patient to schedule further tests like chest X-ray and human
immunodeficiency virus test if blood work like QuantiFERON-TB Gold (QFT) showing positive, healthcare
provider will check on patients for positive QFT and give education related to TB during a visit, public
health professionals like staff in local health department will call patient for collecting more information
and giving education on medication regimen before ordering free TB medications, a pharmacist will get
these medications delivered to PUSH, triage nurse will scheduled appointment and observe patient to
take the medications weekly. Change based on evidence require the collaborative support of nursing
team, physicians and pharmacists. This kind of practice definitely improve the quality, safety, and
economy of healthcare.

research findings to inform health care practices.

Answer the following questions:

Discuss the role of the advanced practice nurse as an interdisciplinary research collaborator and
member of the interdisciplinary team obligated to co-participate in the implementation and use of
evidence-based practice.

End your discussion by providing an example of an evidence-based change that would require the
collaborative efforts of nursing and at least two other healthcare disciplines and that would lead to
quality improvement in healthcare.
