Question 1:

Design a PV system to process 10 kW if power at 230 V, 60 Hz single-phase AC. The PV module data is

given below:

The Voltage and Current Characteristics

of a Typical Photovoltaic Module

Power (max) 300 W

Voltage at MPP, 𝑉 50.6 V

Current at MPP, 𝐼 5.9 A

Open circuit voltage, 𝑉 63.2 V

Short circuit current, 𝐼 6.5 A

Determine the following:

a) The inverter input voltage (𝑉 ), use a modulation index of 𝑚 = 0.9.

c) The string voltage (𝑉 ).

Question 2:

Design a PV system to process 500 kW of power at 400 V, 60 Hz, three-phase AC. Use the PV data from

question 1 to solve the following:

a) The inverter input voltage (𝑉 ), use a modulation index of 𝑚 = 0.9.

b) Number of modules to be connected in a string (approximate the string voltage to be 550 V) (NM).

c) The power generated by one string (𝑃 ).

d) The actual string voltage (𝑉 ).

e) Assume each array is designed for 20 kW, calculate the number of strings in an array (NS).

f) Assume each array is designed for 20 kW, calculate the number of arrays for a 500 kW system (NA).

The inverters should be rated to withstand the output voltage of a boost converter and should be able

to supply the required power. The inverter is rated at 100 kW with an input voltage of 835 V DC and

the amplitude modulation index of 0.9. The output voltage of the inverter is 460 V AC and the

switching frequency is 5.04 kHz.

g) The number of inverters needed to process 500 kW (NI).

h) The frequency modulation index (𝑚 ).

i) The number of boost converters required (NB).
