AND IMAGES Texts

MULTIMODALITY
It refers to the use of availability of
several different modes, methods, systems,
etc.
INFOGRAPHIC
Oxford dictionaries define
infographic as “a visual
representation of information
or data, e.g., as a chart or
diagram.”

INFOGRAPHIC
It uses words and images to
communicate a clear message.
It presents facts and figures
Both infographics A and B use a
funnel to show a point. As the text
indicates, this image is about the
phases of radicalization. The shape of
the funnel helps readers understand the
process that begins with “agitation”
brought on by various factors which
eventually lead to the specific and
intended goal of demonstrating
“violent extremism.” This gradual
process is also shown in infographic B.
How does conversion happen through
various social media platforms? First,
there is connection through “open and
searchable” social networking sites,
which eventually leads to “physical
contact.”
It communicates layers of messages to a target
audience through the use of words and images.
An advertisement’s messages are conveyed literally and
subliminally.
A literal message is based on what the text shows.
The reader elicits the meaning based on what is conveyed
explicitly.
A subliminal message is the underlying meaning.

On a literal level, the ad
presents an option for a male
ADVERTISEMENT ANALYSIS consumer to “re-civilize [himself]”
and “look like you give a damn.”
The image in the ad shows a young
man about to throw a severed head.
It has a beard and a full head of
hair known as an Afro. It is a
contrasting image to the man who is
poised to throw away this head. The
young man has hair shaven close to
his head, and he does not have a
beard. He is dressed in a complete
attire that includes a gray cardigan,
a white collared shirt, a pair of
denims, and a pair of black shoes.
On the subliminal level, the ad
seems to communicate more than just
ADVERTISEMENT ANALYSIS about throwing one’s old self away
and making oneself look more
“civilized” by using the hair products
beside the image. In recalling the
history of colonization, conquests in
Africa were done under the guise of
“civilizing” them under more
dominant Anglo-Saxon powers. As
such, what may seem like an
endorsement for hair products may
be viewed as a politically incorrect
statement about one’s appearance
not being civilized enough for a
certain constructed standards.

You can read the words “social
networking” on the side of the picture. It
also shows two sets of images: the first
one on top is labeled “THEN.” It shows a
group of individuals sitting around a
bonfire, facing each other, talking and
listening. The second picture below is
labeled “NOW,” and it shows a similar
group of people. But neither are they
facing each other nor talking and
listening. In addition, each one has a
gadget. Based on the words and images,
the editorial cartoon shows a common
situation of how technology has shaped
our group dynamics.
