Definition
If a wave is emitted from a uniform line source, the
wave fronts are cylindrical

Solutions of these Equations are called cylindrical

waves
Characteristics
The approximate wave function is

Where
Φ = Phase angle
K= Wave number
w= k v is an expression of angular frequency
𝑢0
= Amplitude of the wave
𝑅
Separable Solutions in Cylindrical
Coordinates
Bessel Function
By solving Equation for Bessel functions for
another solution say V by using method of
integration , we get

Bessel function of 2nd kind

General Solution for TE and TM
mode
Applications
 Application of the cylindrical wave approach to the
simulation of buried utilities.
 In Electromagnetic Theory, cylindrical waves are
widely used.
 Cylindrical waves also used in Radiation and Sound
propagation.
 These waves also used in Power plants.
Definition
A wave is propagation dynamic disturbance of one or more quantities,
sometimes as described by a wave equation

When a wave propagate from a point source in all directions, the wave
is three dimensional. If the medium through which the wave moves is
isotropic (constant density), such a wave is called Spherical Wave.
Laplace Operator in Spherical
Coordinates

The laplacian operator can be written as

Methods to Solve Wave Equation
 By Separation Method
 D’ Alembert Method
We first find general solution as the sum of two arbitrary
differentiable functions of the combinations (𝑥 - 𝑐𝑡) 𝑎𝑛𝑑
(𝑥 + 𝑐𝑡) .Then we apply the boundary and initial
conditions to the general solution
The right side of eq .represents two progressive
travelling waves with speed 𝑐. This solution is called
D’Alembert’s solution of the wave equation .
Initial and Boundary Values
It is clear that boundary problem at r=0 produces a wave
propagating to the right with speed 𝑐.
The displacement is influenced only by the initial data on the
interval [𝑟 - 𝑐𝑡, 𝑟 + 𝑐𝑡] .

Subject to the condition 𝑟 ≥ 𝑐𝑡.

when 𝑟 < 𝑐𝑡, this solution is not valid because 𝑓, 𝑔 are not defined
for 𝑟 < 0
Applications
 Tuning fork as a source of spherical wave
 Light as a source of spherical waves
 Ultrasound spherical waves

Ultrasonic wave is defined as “inaudible sound

with high frequency for human”
the frequency of which generally exceeds 20 kHz
