Activity 17 “Engineering designs for the future”

Watch the video about Engineering in the future. Answer the following
questions:

1. Write a summary of the video

This video talks about an advanced and futuristic project called hyperloop that is
the future way of project called hyperloop that is the future way of transportation
and mention the advantages that is going to be when implementing in the daily life
of the human being.
The video talks about HYPERLOOP where a "bullet" meter is a capsule that is too
fast and it is thought that in 2019 the first tests will be done and after that they will
leave in 2020 in shopping centers for use.

The hyperloop is a visionary idea, where many designs and projects are being
developed and tested but is nothing clear yet. The hyperloop would be a way of
transportation that consist of a capsule that would travel through tubes using air
pressure.

They mention that this idea dates back to 1799 when a British mechanical
engineer and inventor named George Midhurst proposed the idea of an
atmosphere rail road that would push objects pneumatically through cast irons
pipes using compressed air. At the beginning of the 19 th century in Great Britain
and Ireland the first designs were made. This does not mean that is the same as
the hyperloop, but the same basic concepts are being used. Gradual
improvements have been made with this idea over the years.

There are two companies who are making this project hyperloop transportation
technologies and Virgin Hyperloop one. This last one is making more advances
and they have already prototype, the need to think in all the ways that can go
wrong so they can have a solution, for example a potential break or breach in one
of the tubes possibly caused by an external impact as earthquake so the solution
is constructing thick steel tubes.
They need to know where the hyperloop will be located in al around the world, risk
factors, environment conditions and all the missing variables so that the project
can be approved.

2. Describe the innovation show in the video.

It consists of capsules or wagons that will travel levitating through a network of
low-pressure steel tubes. This network of pipes can be deployed on land by
lifting them on pillars, but they can also go underground.
In this project they are using a really high technology with the purpose of
creating a faster way of transportation. One of the requirements that they put in
this project is that it needs to be affordable to all. One of the companies building
this project is the Hyperloop one and they launched a global challenge to find
routes best placed to benefit them, and they have 35 potential locations. This
company is working now with 10 countries in partnership to see how they will
deliver this technology. Two of them are in the UK that will go from Glaslow-
Liverpool and Edinburgh- London.

Hyperloop stations will be called “portals” and are planned to be located within
inner city areas with easy links to exiting transport infrastructure. It will be better
than air travel because airports tend to be located beyond city limits and they
have fewer accessibility.
One advantage of using this transportation is that it will reduce the time that is
takes us to travel from one place to another. They mention an example that a 2-
hour trip, will be reduce to only 15 minutes. This opens a wide range od housing
and employment opportunities because you won´t need to live close to where
you work.

Another advantage is that it will contribute to the environment by reducing

emission, a study carried out comparing it with trips of 1000-1500 km in planes,
by using the hyperloop it would reduce emissions by 58%, a more futuristic idea
is that the system could be powered by renewable technologies like solar or
wind energy.
3. How was the engineering applied in the design and implementation
of the construction presented
The capsules would have an air compressor installed in the nose to avoid the
effect of compression by currents (choked flow) in speed, and are raised with
measures of 1.35 meters wide, 15 meters long and 1.1 meters high. These
would also integrate electric motors in line that would make them take very high
speeds, and would float on a layer of air between 0.5 or 1.3 millimeters like the
air mattresses we see in air hockey.
Initially, this technology will also be proposed to be able to move with solar
energy, with a series of panels that would be mounted on the outer surface of
the tubes, and which could contain the excess energy to use it on cloudy days.
However, this technology is still available, so from here we have models that
meet Hyperloop's speed expectations there could be some substance changes
in how they do it.
Elon Musk idea of how the hyperloop need to work is that compression fans
would move air through the passenger’s pods to minimize drag and create “air
bearings” beneath them, floating them off the surface of tubes. His first
hyperloop concept had an estimated cost of USD $6 but never came to it.
This company wants to bring a hyperloop system into operation by 2021. Its
technology combines two principles: the first is magnetic levitation, a technology
used in monorails to lift the passenger’s pods and more them a long the rails.
The second is the use of a low-pressure vacuum sealed environment for the
passenger pods to travel through. The advantage of being in a tube is that the
system is protected from the weather and can operate in any climating
conditions. This project is being tested in Nevada and they built a 500 meter
track and they achieved a top speed of over 240 mph.
4. Write a conclusion about the activity
This idea is very innovative and very sad since with that you can save time from 6
hours on the way to 40 minutes, also making it not to spend much fuel and take
care of the environment since it is a current problem in the world.
In this video we learn how the hyperloop functions, the advantages of
implementing it, how will they have applied methods for safeness and where they
can bolt over the world.
When they achieve this project is going to change the way traveling and living so
drastically and it will be revolutionary for the science and technology. You would
no longer spend hours at the terminals waiting for the plane to leave or sitting for
long hours in buses, and since the trip would be faster, people would choose this
way of traveling instead of driving hours on the road which would avoid accidents
and be a safer trip.
So believe that they can make hypersonic trips that would mean that traveling
long distances that takes hours, with invention you could arrive in a matter of an
hour an hour, 15 minutes depending on the distances. Because it will be new,
maybe the cost will be high, but like the airplanes, they will make it affordable for
everyone to use it. It sounds very unreal and maybe a little impossible but humans
achieve traveling into space, I thing that nothing sounds impossible anymore and
it’s a matter of time that they will accomplish this project.
Activity 18 “Celebrating music in a country”

I. Answer the next questions.

1. Have you ever been in a Music Festival/Concert/Musical?

Yes, I’ve been to a music festival.

2. What singers or bands did you see in this festival?

The 1917, Artic Monkeys, and Foster the people.

3. What is an important music festival celebrated in your city?

Hellow Festival, Wish, Pa’l norte and Machaca Fest

4. What do you think is the purpose of organizing a festival of music?

Collect money (selling food and beer), to have fun, meeting people,
listening to music you’re never heard before.

5. How accessible are festivals of music in your country?

There is no age restriction, but a minor cannot drink alcohol. The place:
center of the city, and if you buy your tickets months before the event, it’s
cheaper.

6. Which one do you consider is the best Music Festival in the world?
Tomorrowland or Coachella.
