Define the following terms,
a. Work Day A 24-hr period commencing from the time an employee regularly starts to work regardless of whether the work is broken or continuous, it may not coincide with a calendar day. b. Calendar Day A 24-hr period commencing at 12 midnight and ending at 11:59 pm. It is possible for an employee to work for 2 calendar days. c. Overtime Work rendered after normal eight (8) hours of work is called “overtime work.” d. Undertime It is when the employee fails to render the complete 8 hours of work required by the employer. e. Premium Pay It refers to the additional compensation required by law for work performed within the eight (8) normal hours of work on nonworking days, such as rest days and regular and special holidays f. Qualified Premium Pay It is additional compensation for work performed by the employee on a day which falls both on a holiday and a scheduled rest day of the employee. g. Overtime Pay It refers to the additional compensation for work performed beyond the eight (8) normal hours of work on a given day. An employee is entitled to both premium pay and overtime pay if he works on a non-working day and renders overtime work on the same day. h. Work Week It is a week consisting of 168 consecutive hours or 7 consecutive 24-hour work days, beginning at the same hour and on the same calendar day each calendar week. i. Reduction of eight-hour working day The employer, in the lawful exercise of its prerogative, is not prohibited from reducing the 8-hr normal working time per day provided that no corresponding reduction is made on the employee’s wage or salary equivalent to an 8-hr work day. In instances where the number of hours required by the nature of work is less than 8 hours, such number of hours should be regarded as the employee’s full working day. j. Shortening of work week It is an alternative arrangement whereby the normal workweek is reduced to less than 6 days but the total number of normal hours per week remains at 48 hours. The normal workday is increased to more than 8 hours without a corresponding overtime premium. This applies as well to 40 or 44-hour workweek firms. It may also refer to the reduction of working days by the employer, which is valid where the arrangement is resorted to by the employer to prevent serious business losses due to causes beyond his control. In such a case, the employer may deduct the wages and living allowances corresponding to the days taken off, in the absence of an agreement specifically providing that a reduction in the number of days will not adversely affect the remuneration of the employees. 13.
