Proposal

The student will research the environmental impacts of fast fashion, specifically how much water is wasted in denim production. For their senior project, they will purchase pre-owned denim items and paint designs on them to resell online, with proceeds going to an environmental organization. By educating peers on fast fashion's environmental effects in a fun way through an Instagram account, the student aims to inspire second-hand shopping and clothing production awareness.

SUMMARY

For my senior project, I am going to research the effects of fast fashion on our

environment, specifically how water is wasted in the mass production of denim. Expressing

ourselves creatively through fashion is important, but should not negatively impact our earth in

doing so. I plan to purchase pre-owned denim items (jeans, jackets, tote bags, etc.) and paint

them to drive people to buy them again. All sales will be done online through Instagram and

shipped contact free. Hopefully, by adding new and creative designs to denim, the buyer will

love their clothing even more. All proceeds collected from the purchase of the denim will go to

an environmental organization (Contacted three potential organizations/consultants and waiting

for responses). When shipped, I’ll leave a handwritten letter explaining how many liters of water

they just saved from being wasted by contributing to my project. By educating my peers in a fun

way, we can impact the environment greatly. The instagram I make will also provide facts and

different statistics of fast fashion in regard to the environment. My goal for this project is to

inspire people to shop second hand and teach people the cycle of how their clothes are made and

how it directly affects our Earth.

In order to guide my research, my driving questions are as follows:

● How much water is used in the production of jean products?

● How is the water polluted through producing denim?

● Where does the water go after the denim is made?

● What laws have been made in order to reduce water waste?

● How many denim products are sold monthly in the world?

(I contacted the “Responsibility in Fashion located in New York”, “Greenpeace” and a local

organization called “Clothes Mentor” asked if they would work with me and I am also planning

on donating all proceeds of my senior project to the organization I work with)

Mrs. Spruill has agreed to be my project advisor. She is not only the Fashion and

Entrepreneurship teacher, but she teaches a unit based off of fast fashion. ·

B. NEW SKILLS, ENHANCED SKILLS, AREAS OF GROWTH

Upcycling Pre-Owned Denim to Sell (All proceeds go to an organization)

● New Skills – In charge of business development, skills in repurposing clothing, and

outreach to organizations

● Enhanced Skills – research, painting, advertising, and marketing

● Areas of Growth – Originality, time management, and writing

C. PROJECT-PAPER CONNECTION –

For my project, I am purchasing pre-owned jeans and painting them so they can find a new

home. Painting designs on jeans prolongs the life of the denim and saves water from being

wasted in the production of a new pair of denim. This project related to several environmental

issues such as water pollution, air pollution, and the greenhouse gas emissions.

D. ACADEMIC HONESTY
The Senior Project demands a high level of integrity on your part in every phase of the

project. All work you present for your project and paper will be assumed to be your own. When

you are presenting work that is not original, you must acknowledge the use of such work by

properly documenting the paper, the project/portfolio, and presentation.

I understand that any academic dishonesty by me on any part of the project/paper will result in

failure of the Senior Project and forfeiture of the Legal Studies Seal on my High School diploma.

E. SIGNED FORMS

PARENT AGREEMENT -

As a First Colonial High School, Legal Studies Academy parent, I recognize all parts of the

Senior Project are graduation requirements, and I intend to support my student throughout the

process. However, I will at no time do any of the work for my student or falsify any

documentation, such as consultant agreements, absence/excuse notes.

I understand the physical project must be a product or performance which takes at least 20 hours

outside of class time to complete, and which challenges my son/daughter’s current skills and

knowledge. Additionally, I recognize I may obtain needed information via the Senior Project

Manual, which is posted online.

I fully understand this project selection decision is made independently of the staff and

administration of First Colonial High School. The project selection and approval are parent and

student-centered. Final approval for the project is governed by the Senior Project Advisory

Board.

Due to the importance of the Senior Project, submission of a project without approval will result

in a failure and/or forfeit of Legal Studies Graduation.
