    Example of Linguistic Relativity( refers to the way native languages of


    people affect their word view).

    Example 1
    Among Whorf’s best known examples of linguistic relativity are instances where
    an indigenous language has several terms for a concept that is only described with
    one word in European languages (Whorf used the acronym SAE “Standard
    Average European” to allude to the rather similar grammatical structures.

    Example 2
    A commonly cited example of linguistic relativity is the example of how Inuit
    Eskimos describe snow. In English there is only one word for snow, but in Inuit
    language, many words are used to describe snow; “wet snow.” “Clinging snow,”
    “frosty snow,” and so on.

    Example 3
    Arabic has many words for different kinds of camels, in Chinese there is only one
    term luotuo and in English there is camel.
    Example of Sapir Whorf Hypothesis
    An example of Sapir Whorf Hypothesis is how sexiest language influences the way
    in which our society views man and women. For instance, we use words like

    Fireman

    Policeman

    And Male Nurse.

    Example 2

    An example for the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis would be the word fireman, which
    thanks to the suffix, makes the listener associate the profession with men.

    In Spanish the word for fireman is a gendar neutral term, which would likely lead
    to a different way of thinking than with the English word.

    Let’s use the Sapir Whorf hypothesis to look at a real life example in the work
    force.

    John and Marry are two best friends who work at same hospital. Though John
    initially wanted to be a doctor, he later changed his mind and decided to be a
    nurse like Mary. John was often teased about his career choice. He was told that a
    man should be a doctor, not a nurse by several acquaintances. Though John’s
    friends and relatives never teased him about his job, John noticed that whenever
    they explained his occupation to others, they referred to him as a ‘male nurse.’but
    they called Mary a nurse.

    By referring to John as a ‘male nurse’ and his friend Mary as just a ‘nurse’ their
    acquaintances were using language shaped by societal views that being a nurse is
    a woman’s profession, and men should not be nurses.
    Example of Linguistic Determinism
    In Orwell’s famous dystopian novel, 1984, the fictional language of
    Newspeak provides a strong example of linguistic determinism. The
    restricted vocabulary and grammar make it impossible to speak or even
    think of rebelling against the totalitarian government, instead aligning
    its speakers with the ideology of ingsoc.

    Linguistic determinism is the idea that language and its structures limit
    and determine human knowledge or thought process….. one well known
    example Whorf used to support his theory was the number of words the
    Eskimos language has for ‘snow’ for example’ apun’ snow on the
    ground ‘qanikca’ hard snow on the ground.
