Verbal Ability‐Reading Comprehension 46
Data Interpretation‐Logical Reasoning 33
Quantitative Ability 52
Overall 152
SimCAT‐10 was marked by an easy VA‐RC section and, medium to difficult DI‐LR and an easy QA
sections.Reports from various IMS centers suggest that most students found QA section easy.
This was expected because the QA section was perfectly mapped to the first slot of CAT‐2016.
Similarly 5 out of 8 sets in the DI‐LR section were perfectly mapped to the sets in the second slot
of CAT‐2016. The remaining three sets were different and not perfectly mapped to the sets in the
second slot of CAT‐2016 because sets on similar nature have been included either in workshops
or in previous SimCATs.
Following table shows the marks required to score different percentiles in the three sections as
well as overall.
Score
Percentile Verbal Score DI‐LR Score Quant Overall Score
99% 60 46 72 161
95% 55 41 64 145
90% 51 37 58 133
80% 44 31 49 117
70% 39 27 42 103
Overall analysis
As stated earlier, the QA and DI‐LR sections of this SimCAT were mostly similar to CAT‐2016. That
will give you an idea as to the level of difficulty of CAT‐2016.
What is really heartening to us is that students have not let their performance in one section
affect their performance in the following section(s). We had highlighted this important fact in the
experts’ take on SimCAT‐9. Of course the DI‐LR sets in SimCAT‐9 were a notch higher in difficulty
level than the sets in this SimCAT. Yet this SimCAT also had its share of challenging DI‐LR sets. We
are happy to note that students did not let the somewhat challening DI‐LR section affect their
performance in the QA section that followed the DI‐LR section. Moreover this SimCAT DI‐LR
section required careful selection of sets. We are happy to note that the students have further
perfected this art.
SimCAT 10 Experts’ Take
By design, SimCAT‐9 was meant to impress upon the important learning that you should not let
your performance in one section to affect your performance in the following section(s). SimCAT‐
10 was an opportunity for you to implement that learning.
Verbal Ability‐ Reading Comprehension
VA RC section of SimCAT10 was easy. The format was designed for you to maximize your score.
At this stage in your preparation all you efforts should be tuned towards maximizing your score
in the VARC Section.
The test began with shorter questions in TITA – 14 questions in all. At least seven of the
questions were easy. The sentence completion questions had several vocabulary items to
remind you of the importance of vocabulary in the exams, not only the CAT but the other
exams as well. The incorrect word usage questions were a little tricky. They generally tend to be
tricky, anyway. Barring these seven questions – which were short, hence to be attempted in
very short time – the remaining TITA questions, 3 Paragraph jumbles, 2 Odd sentence, and 2
Last sentence questions were all easy. Realizing that vocabulary questions can be tricky, if you
had concentrated on the reasoning questions you could score in all these 7 questions. And the
marks you scored in vocabulary would be the bonus! You had ample time for the reasoning
questions, and the questions themselves were easy.
A better strategy would be to attempt the 7 reasoning questions in the beginning itself and
reserve the shorter vocabulary questions for the end. However, at this time we should make
you understand that Vocabulary (and grammar) questions are technical questions in the
language, and they allow little scope for reasoning. Therefore, don’t rely on them for the marks,
unless you are exceptionally good in Vocab and grammar. Given a choice between a vocabulary
question and a reasoning question you should deliberate on the reasoning question, rather
than on the vocabulary question. If you are sure of the vocabulary item, you can score quickly
and still concentrate on the reasoning question. If you are not sure, rely on the reasoning
question. This does not mean that you shouldn’t work towards improving your vocabulary and
grammar. Put in a lot of efforts, but don’t rely on these questions for the marks. You should
make your RC and Reasoning perfect.
Reading Comprehension in SimCAT 10 was also relaxed and easy. All the 4 passages were
readable, and had several easy questions. There were 20 questions in 4 passages. That means,
you could do all the passages in SimCAT 10. The book review of Fukuyama’s Our Post‐Human
Future was easy to read and had easy to medium questions. The passages on Inattentional
blindness, Mirror images, and Barbie dolls, were all, likewise, easy to read and to answer
questions. We expected a serious candidate to attempt, if not all 20, at least 17 questions in RC,
leaving a question only because he/she did not want to take unnecessary risks – and not
because the questions themselves were difficult.
SimCAT 10 Experts’ Take
An attempt of 30 questions was well possible in SimCAT 10. The cut off 46 marks was easy to
achieve – half the cut off marks could come from the TITA questions themselves. However, you
had to score 55‐60 marks to be in top 5 percentile. However, this is slightly disappointing as a
score of 70 marks was possible in this SimCAT. Many of you, perhaps, did not try to maximize
your score and got content with taking the test as usual. The actual CAT always had marks
above 70 percent in VARC in the top range. We are not worried about this because you are
likely to achieve those scores in the actual CAT. All the same many of you did well in this
SimCAT. Keep it up and look for constant improvement.
Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning
5 out of 8 sets in this SimCAT were similar to the sets in the second slot of CAT‐2016. The first DI
set on insurance policies (Q.1 to 4) was the toughest in the section and was avoided by majority
of students. The second DI set (Q.5 to 8) on the software built by a bank was also tricky. Students
who took CAT‐2016 in the second slot will be able to recollect that the set appeared lot more
confusing in the actual CAT. We simplified the wording of the set to avoid any multiple
interpretations. The third DI set on the employees of an organization was the easiest and should
not have been missed. We are happy to note that majority of students did not miss that set.
In LR, the second set (Q.21 to 24) and the third set (Q.25 to 28) were challenging; in fact, the third
set was fairly difficult. It was rightly avoided by a majority of the students.
In this section, students should have first focussed on up‐to 3 LR sets before attempting the other
challenging sets. Even if you had got say 10 questions correct out of the 12 in those 3 LR sets, you
would have been in the striking distance of clearing the cut‐off.
Quantitative Ability
For the first time in this SimCAT season, the cut‐off for the QA section has crossed 50. This section
was indeed on easier lines. As you know, just in the previous SimCAT, the cut‐off for the
QAsection stood at less than 30. We have stated several times so far that CAT is unpredictible so
will SimCATs be. We will elaborate more on this aspect later, under learnings.
This section was mostly easy but had its own share of somewhat tricky and /or challenging
questions. For example, Q.18, Q.28 and Q.30 fell in that category. Students who identified that
the angle bisector theorem was applicable in Q.30 would get the answer quickly. However those
who could not relate to that would find it puzzling.
Selection of questions
In order to clear the cut‐off for section 1 comfortably, about 23 questions could have been
solved with 80% accuracy. To do the same for section 2, about 16 questions could have been
solved with 80% accuracy. To do the same for section 3, about 25 questions could have been

solved with 80% accuracy. In order to clear the overall cut‐off, you would have to solve about 8
more questions with 80% accuracy. Given below are the questions you should have solved.
Sec. Must‐Solve Questions* Potential Score Improvers** Total Qs
VA‐RC 5,6,12,13,15,16,19,22,23,24,25,28,29 3,4,7,17,18,20,21,26,27,30,33,34 25
mistakes and correct them. Once you figure out what works for you and what doesn’t, you can
chart out the way for yourself and tackle exam at any level of difficulty.
Several good students give up on the CAT because of not‐so‐good performance in theSimCATs.
Don’t do that. A subpar performance in a few SimCATs should not dishearten you. Take it in your
stride and work on the areas that need improvement.
Also remember that your percentile in the actual CAT will be slightly higher than in the SimCATs
because of wider student base. So your performance will also be better in the actual CAT. This has
been our experience of last several years. This should also help you to maintain your positivity.
SimCAT‐10 is over. What next?
In this Experts’ take, we have given you some important suggestions on the importance of
percentiles and maintaining your positivity. Incorporate these suggestions while taking the
remaining SimCATs and the actual CAT.
If you have not read the expert take on the previous SimCAT, make sure that you refer to it now.
All the Best for SimCAT‐11!
