This lesson allows you to go on a journey that will create a better understanding and

TECHNICAL VOCABULARY FOR DRAMA AND THEATER

1. Theater - The structure within which theatrical performances are given. Usually includes an
orchestra or seating area, and a stage.
2. Theatre - A collaborative art form including the composition, enactment, and interpretation of
dramatic presentations for an audience.
3. Drama - refers to acting, and to the set-up of the play which includes the theater, the hall, the
accessories, the green room, costumes, music and the like.
4. Scene - is like a division of an act, in which a certain portion of the play unfolds, usually separated
by location (in the bedroom, at the dinner table), or time (e.g. in the morning, then the following evening).
5. Play - a literary piece consisting of dialogues between various characters, epilogue, monologue,
prologue and an end. It refers to composition.
6. One-act play - is a play that takes place, from beginning to end, in a single act. It can range from
one-minute to one-hour long.
7. Script - is a written version of a play or movie. If you’re auditioning for a movie, you’ll get the
script to practice a scene or two.
8. Dramatist - is a person who is skilled in the production of a play. He is well versed with the
rudiments and principles of dramaturgy, such as the measurement of the stage on which the play has
to be staged, the nature of characters, the costumes that fit the characters, the music to be played, the
music room, the green room, the synchronization of music and dialogue delivery, and the like. In
short, it can be said that drama deals with all nuances of the composition of play.
9. Playwright - the author of a play. The duty of a playwright is to adhere to the principles of
composing a play.
10. Informal Theater - a theatrical performance that focuses on small presentations, such as one
taking place in a classroom setting and is not intended for public view.
11. Formal Theater - a theatrical performance that focuses on public presentation in front of an
audience and in which the final production is most important.

12. Tech Rehearsal - It is a rehearsal where technical elements such as sound and lighting are added
to the show.
13. Cold Rehearsal - It is reading aloud from a script with little or no rehearsal, practice or study in
advance. It is also referred to as sight reading. It is a technique used by actors and other performers
in theatre, television and film performance fields.
14. Dress Rehearsal - the final rehearsal of a live show in which everything is done as it would be in
a real performance.

Before reading and watching Romeo and Juliet’s story, let us first learn new words. Give the
meaning of the underlined words using context clues.

What is Romeo and Juliet all about?

Romeo and Juliet is a play written by Shakespeare. It is a tragic love story where the two main
characters, Romeo and Juliet, are supposed to be sworn enemies but fall in love. Due to their
families' ongoing conflict, they cannot be together, so they kill themselves because they cannot cope
with being separated from one another. Romeo and Juliet is a Shakespearean tragedy.

CHARACTER LIST

1. JULIET Capulet's daughter. She is presented as a young and innocent adolescent, not yet 14 years
old. Her youthfulness is stressed throughout the play to illustrate her progression from adolescence to
maturity and to emphasize her position as a tragic heroine. Juliet's love for Romeo gives her the
strength and courage to defy her parents and face death twice.

2. ROMEO Montague's son, who is loved and respected in Verona. He is initially presented as a
comic lover, with his inflated declarations of love for Rosaline. After meeting Juliet, he abandons his
tendency to be a traditional, fashionable lover, and his language becomes intense, reflecting his
genuine passion for Juliet. By avenging Mercutio's death, he sets in motion a chain of tragic events
that culminate in suicide when he mistakenly believes Juliet to be dead.

3. MERCUTIO Kinsman to the prince and friend of Romeo. His name comes from the word
mercury, the element which indicates his quick temper. Mercutio is bawdy, talkative, and tries to
tease Romeo out of his melancholy frame of mind. He accepts Tybalt's challenge to defend Romeo's
honor and is killed, thus precipitating Romeo's enraged reaction during which Romeo kills Tybalt.

4. TYBALT Lady Capulet's nephew and Juliet's cousin. Tybalt is violent and hot-tempered, with a
strong sense of honor. He challenges Romeo to a duel in response to Romeo's attending a Capulet
party. His challenge to Romeo is taken up by Mercutio, whom Tybalt kills. Romeo then kills Tybalt.

5. THE NURSE Juliet's nursemaid, who acts as confidante and messenger for Romeo and Juliet.
Like Mercutio, the Nurse loves to talk and reminisce, and her attitude toward love is bawdy. The

Nurse is loving and affectionate toward Juliet, but compromises her position of trust when she
advises Juliet to forget Romeo and comply with her parents' wishes and marry Paris.

6. FRIAR LAURENCE A brother of the Franciscan order and Romeo's confessor, who advises both
Romeo and Juliet. The Friar agrees to marry the couple in secret in the hope that marriage will
restore peace between their families. His plans to reunite Juliet with Romeo are thwarted by the
influence of fate. The Friar concocts the potion plot through which Juliet appears dead for 42 hours
in order to avoid marrying Paris. At the end of the play, the Prince recognizes the Friar's good
intentions.

7. CAPULET Juliet's father is quick-tempered and impetuous but is initially reluctant to consent to
Juliet's marriage with Paris because Juliet is so young. Later, he changes his mind and angrily
demands that Juliet obeys his wishes. The deaths of Romeo and Juliet reconcile Capulet and
Montague.

8. PARIS A noble young kinsman to the Prince. Paris is well-mannered and attractive and hopes to
marry Juliet. Romeo fights and kills Paris at the Capulet tomb when Paris thinks that Romeo has
come to desecrate the bodies of Tybalt and Juliet.

9. BENVOLIO Montague's nephew and friend of Romeo and Mercutio. Benvolio is the peacemaker
who attempts to keep peace between Tybalt and Mercutio. After the deaths of Mercutio and Tybalt,
Benvolio acts as a Chorus, explaining how events took place.

10. LADY CAPULET Lady Capulet is vengeful and she demands Romeo's death for killing Tybalt.
In her relationship with Juliet, she is cold and distant, expecting Juliet to obey her father and marry
Paris.

11. MONTAGUE Romeo's father, who is concerned by his son's melancholy behavior.

12. BALTHASAR Romeo's servant. He brings Romeo the news in Mantua that Juliet is dead.

13. AN APOTHECARY A poverty-stricken chemist, who illegally sells poison to Romeo.

14. ESCALUS Prince of Verona. The symbol of law and order in Verona, but he fails to prevent
further outbreaks of the violence between the Montagues and Capulets. Only the deaths of Romeo
and Juliet, rather than the authority of the prince, restore peace.

15. FRIAR JOHN A brother of the Franciscan order, sent by Friar Laurence to tell Romeo of his
sleeping potion plan for Juliet. The Friar is prevented from getting to Mantua and the message does
not reach Romeo.

16. LADY MONTAGUE In contrast with Lady Capulet, Lady Montague is peace-loving and
dislikes the violence of the feud. Like her husband, she is concerned by her son's withdrawn and
secretive behavior. The news of Romeo's banishment breaks her heart, and she dies of grief.

17. PETER A Capulet servant attending the Nurse.

Romeo and Juliet - Plot Summary


➢ Two wealthy families, the Montagues and the Capulets, have another brawl in the city of
Verona. The Prince and the townspeople cannot cope with the constant fighting so the Prince
declares that the next person to break the peace will be killed.
➢ Romeo Montague and his friends gatecrash a Capulet party and Romeo meets Juliet Capulet. He
falls in love with her instantly. They are shocked to discover they are sworn enemies due to their
feuding families. Friar Laurence marries Romeo and Juliet.
➢ Romeo goes to celebrate his marriage with his friends, Mercutio and Benvolio, but gets into a
fight with Juliet's cousin, Tybalt. Tybalt kills Mercutio and Romeo avenges his death by killing
Tybalt.
➢ The Prince banishes Romeo because he killed Tybalt. Both Romeo and Juliet are heartbroken.
➢ Capulet, Juliet's father, decides she should marry Paris. Juliet refuses and goes to Friar Laurence
where they come up with a plan for Romeo and Juliet to be together.
➢ Juliet fakes her death and lies in a tomb waiting for Romeo to come so they can run away
together. Romeo doesn't receive the message about the plan, so thinks Juliet has actually died.
He goes to Verona and sees Juliet in her tomb, “dead.”
➢ Romeo drinks poison so he can be with Juliet in death. She wakes up to discover Romeo is dead.
Juliet kills herself with his dagger.
➢ The Capulet and Montague families vow never to argue again.
