Study this:

- Your body changes as you grow up. You grow taller and become heavier. Other parts of
your body become bigger.

Physical Changes (Pagbabago sa pangangatawan)


(Physical Growth)
1. There are ways to measure how big or how tall you have grown. One way is to measure
your height.
- Your height ( taas o tangkad ) is a measure of how tall you are. It is commonly
expressed in centimeters, meters or feet.
- An increase in height is a sign that you are growing up. Height can be measured using
meter stick or tape measure.

2. Another way of telling how much you have grown is by measuring your weight. Your
weight ( timbang o bigat ) is a measure of how heavy you are. It is commonly expressed
in kilograms or pounds. Weight can be measured using weighing scale.
Changes in height and in weight are signs of physical growth.

Physical Activites ( mga ginagawa o mga gawain )


A child’s physical activities changes as he grows.
1. By 2 to 6 months – babies kick , roll, smile and cry to have food.
2. By 18 months or 1 ½ years – most children can feed themselves, walk and run a short
distance, stock some blocks and say a few words.
3. By 3 years old – most children walk and run long distance as they play with members of
the family and playmates.
4. By 5 years old – most children improve his way on physical growth such a walking and
running alone as they play with friends.
5. By 8- 15 years old – grow heavier and taller. Run for errands (nauutusan ) and help in
household chores. Look for peers and conscious in physical appearance. Do these
activities alone with guidance of elders at home and school.

Social Activities ( pakikisalamuha sa ibang tao)


1. When you were a baby , your interest was centered to your mother and father, enjoyed
playing with the family members only.
2. As a person grows, he/she makes many friends with others.
3. It is important to have friends who will listen to you and whom you can talk to or play
with. Being able to make friends and talk to them is a sign of social growth.
4. Friends are precious. They should be treated with respect.

Mental Abilities
Children grow physically and socially. They also grow mentally.
Babies can’t talk like you do. They cry to get what they want.
Thinking abilities are also called mental abilities. Our mental abilities improve as we
grow older. We learn more. We learn how to speak fluently and read fast. We learn how
to write about and draw the beautiful things around us. We learn to solve more difficult
problems. We never stop learning even if we have grown very old.
The way you understand, read, write, and solve puzzles shows the level of your mental
ability.
You will gain this ability as you grow.
Factors Affecting Your Growth and Development
Heredity , environment, food ,recreation and health practices are factors affecting growth
and development of a child.
1. Heredity – is a process when a child inherits the physical and mental characteristics of
their parents .
Some traits are inherited ( namana ) by children from their parents such as height,
texture and color of hair, shape of the eyes, face, nose, color of the skin and
intelligence( talino ).
*Some children do not look like their parents because they may look like their
grandparents.

2. Good health habits keep the child growth fast.


The food you eat affects your growth . (Ang pagkain mo nakakaapekto sa paglaki ng
isang bata).
*Right kinds of food in the right amount make a growing child healthy and strong.

*A balanced diet is a meal that contains the basic food nutrients.

*Drinking 8 eight glasses of water everyday are needed to distribute food to the
different body parts to digest food and eliminates wastes.

*Eating nutritious foods keep you healthy and strong. There are three types of food
that will make you grow strong. These are: GO , GLOW , GROW food.
 Go foods give you energy for work and play. They have fats and carbohydrates.
Butter cheese are sources of fats. Bread , rice , pasta and potatoes are rich in
carbohydrates. Other go foods are egg, milk and yogurt.

 GROW foods help you grow tall and strong. They are rich in protein. Protein rich
foods build muscles. They are : meat poultry , fish , cheese, cheese , beans and
legumes (mongo), and nuts . They help our body grow and repair injuries.

 GLOW foods keep the body working well .They are rich in vitamins and minerals.
They help make our body function well and become strong and healthy. They help
maintain good eyesight and healthy skin. they prevent many diseases. Fruits and
vegetables are GLOW foods.

3. Recreation and Your Growth


The games you play and the hobbies you do make make up your recreational activites.
They are activites that help you grow up.
 There are recreational activites that help you grow physically, mentally, and
socially.
*Sipa , patintero, or tumbang preso are good outdoor games. Not only do
you gain friends, you also exercise your body.
*Some games promote mental growth. Board games such as scrabble, chess,
or Chinese checkers help you sharpen your mind since they require a lot of
thinking.
* Exercise : helps your body become fit and strong. It helps develop and
strengthen muscles. It’s a good activity for the heart and lungs.
When you feel tired, you need:
*Rest –to give time for your body to build new energy. You may sit or lie
down but the best way is sleeping.
*Recreation – makes you relaxed. It also helps improve social relationship
with other children.
4. The Environment Affect Growth
 Environment is made up of the things that surround you. People, plants, and
animals are part of your environment.
 Healthful surroundings helps us become strong and healthy .
 Cleaning the house regularly, the kitchen, room, toilet.
 Proper disposal of garbage through segregation.
 Removing stagnant water in canals.
 Burying dead animals.
 Use toilet in disposing human waste.
 Planting trees
 Dirty surroundings can make you sick. Sickness affects your growth.
 Spitting anywhere
 Improper use of toilets,
 Littering
 Improper disposal of garbage wastes causes pollution.
 Burning things and smoke belching cars ,factories, buses pollutes the
air.
 Chemical oils thrown into waterways cause water pollution.

5. Family Affect Growth

 Small family can easily provide for the basic needs of all its members. The
basic needs are foods, shelter and clothing.
 Small family consists of father . mother and 2 or 3 children.
 Children are supported by enough love, time, food and shelter and
education.
 Big family cannot meet the demands and needs of the members easily.
 It has more than four children.
 Parents have to work hard to earn more money to meet their
children’s needs.
 They need more food, more clothes ,and other necessary things.
 There will be more children to send to school.
 They will also need a bigger space to live in.

6. Illnesses Affect Growth and Development


 Illnesses and diseases slow down growth and development. When we get
sick, the cells that make us grow and develop are destroyed by the virus or
bacteria.
 When we are sick we are not able to eat well. We don’t have appetite.
 We cannot move around when we are sick and enjoy our life if we are sick.
 Our immune system cannot fight virus and bacteria.
