ME 502 Exercises

1. Two factories A and B manufacture watches. Factory A produces on the average one defective item for
every 100 items, whereas B produces only one for every 200. A retailer receives a case of watches from
one of the two above factories, but he does not know from which one. He checks the first watch and it
works. What is the probability that the second watch he will checks is good?

2. Two numbers are selected independently at random in the interval [0, 1]. You are told that the smaller
one is less than t. What is the probability that the larger one is greater than 3/4?

3. There are three cards identical in all respects but the color. The first one is red on both sides, the second
one is white on both sides, and the third one is red on one side and white on the other (see figure below).
A dealer selects one card at random and puts it on the table without looking. Having not watched these
operations, you look at the exposed face of the card and see that it is red. What is the probability that the
hidden face is also red?

4. There are n points on a circumference. Two are chosen randomly). What is the probability that
they are neighbors?

5. Let X1, ... , Xn be independent discrete random variables with common variance σ2 • Show that
the standard deviation of the empirical mean (X1 + ... + Xn)/n is σ/√𝑛.

6. Suppose 30 percent of all electrical fuses manufactured by a certain company fail to meet
municipal building standards. What is the probability that in a random sample of 10 fuses, exactly
3 will fail to meet municipal building standards?

7. If in a certain normal distribution of X, the probability is 0.5 that X is less than 500 and 0.0227 that
X is greater than 650. What is the standard deviation of X?

8. Let X be a continuous random variable with density function

If Y = √𝑛, what is the density function for Y where nonzero?

9. Let X and Y be continuous random variables with joint density function.

What is the probability of the event X ≤ 1/2 given that Y ≥3/4?

10. There are six bags containing coins. All of them, except one, are filled with "good" coins. One of
them, unknown to you, contains t "bad" coins (slightly heavier or slightly lighter). You draw one
coin from each bag, and you want to determine if there is a bad coin among the six and if there is
one, which one. Find an optimal search strategy.

11. An industrial product is graded by a machine excellent 80 percents of time, good 15 percents of
time, and defective 5 percents of time. A random sample of 15 items is graded. What is the
probability that machine will grade 10 excellent, 3 good, and 2 defective of which one being the
last one graded?

12. If (X, Y) ~ HYP(n1, n2, n3, r), then what is the covariance of the random variables X and Y?
